A guest from Kalispell, MT recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in December, 2016 The house is in the absolute perfect location. Directly on the rocky beach (no swimming access but also no intruders who wanted to swim). We left the windows open to the ocean breeze night and day and it was divine. In the morning schools of fish congregated near the shore, and in the afternoons we often saw dolphins in the distance. All bedrooms faced the water which was nice. The kitchen was well appointed and the common space big enough to entertain. Now, the negatives. There seems to be a bit of deferred maintenance. The carpet in the hall way is nothing short of filthy and as it was the first thing you saw after walking in the door, it really detracted from an otherwise nice ground floor. The garage is cluttered (and contained two dead rodents), the deck furniture worn, the hot water faucet in one bedroom stopped working while we were there, there is lots of visible exterior rust which is probably a given in the climate but also detracts from otherwise a gem of a building, and the hot tub was not functioning (and not able to be repaired because of a holiday weekend and needing to order parts). A bit of sprucing up and more attention to management would make this place an A+. Our family very much enjoyed our stay.
A guest from Upland, CA recommends this property. Stayed for 6 days in October, 2016 We were able to watch a gorgeous sunset every night from the balcony. It was fabulous! And the house has everything you need to cook, relax, and enjoy. Very nice!
A guest from South Perth, WA, XX recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in October, 2016 This house made us all feel like rock stars. So beautiful!!!! So many places to retreat to and sit and relax! Amazing!!
Anthony P. from Redlands, CA recommends this property. Stayed for 10 days in September, 2016 The home is very nice, location is perfect. This home fit our family of 8 perfectly. The large kitchen was a great plus. All the extra stuff, beach chairs, umbrella, snorkel, fins, ice chest. They had every thing for the beach and then some. This house will be on our list for future visits.
Kristen B. from Louisville, CO recommends this property. Stayed for 9 days in March, 2016 The best thing about this house is it's location in Kona and right on the beach. We saw whales and dolphins right from the family room. With the doors and windows open it literally sounds like you are on a boat, it's actually quite loud. The kitchen has everything you need, from blender to electric can openers as well as spices and cooking oils. The garage is fully stocked with air mattresses for sleeping and everything beach related you could need, in great shape. I think there were 7 boogie boards, umbrellas, straw mats, towels, two coolers, etc. We had to call PM to help us get the hot tub hot and he was very responsive. The road you are on is a little busy but there are many walkers, joggers and cyclists. We never used the sandbox area, it seems kind of old and musky down there! I would recommend the Wild Hawaiian Ocean Adventure tour, it's in a FAST navy SEAL boat and we did the 2 hour snorkelling adventure. We saw manta ray, dolphins and a tiger shark on the trip back to the marina.
Great location and view, detracted by maintenance issues
S Lawrence M. from Granbury, TX recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in January, 2016 Enjoyed location as described online and worth the expense. House was very clean. However, there were many maintenance issues that detracted from what would have been otherwise a 5 star rating that could have been resolved with attention before our rental. Garage door was jammed close. Frig had stopped cooling & needed replacement. Many light bulbs out. Missing sink stoppers. A couple of missing screens (keep bugs out). One jammed window. Upstairs TV unresponsive to remote (TV was replaced). One ceiling fan did not work. To be fair, manager quickly addressed each issue, but should check maintenance issues of house between renters to be proactive rather than reactive for the rental rate being paid. Should also have informed us of the broken garage door in advance of stay, as that kept us from securing car each day, a key reason we rented this property.
Andrea K. from Edmonton, AB recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in December, 2015 The house was well laid out. It fit our family very well. Having the snorkel equipment and bogie boards an added bonus. It had a great location, to two very different beaches, and the morning view second to none.
A guest from Rapid City, SD recommends this property. Stayed for 6 days in November, 2015 What an incredible home right on the break of the ocean. The home has the most incredible and perfect floor plan. It was so perfect for our four families as we celebrated our parent's 50th wedding anniversary. The home is easy to get to and easy to travel out from to explore the island. The home made our trip absolutley perfect. To sit on the upper or lower lanai and watch the sun rise or set was heavenly. Best place ever!!!!
A guest from Pocatello, ID recommends this property. Stayed for 8 days in August, 2015 We took our grown children and spouses (8+ baby) to the Big Island and stayed in this beautiful home. The views were amazing. Several of the dolphin excursion boat trips come just a few hundred yards away, which means you get to see lots of Dolphins. They had beach towels to golf clubs available. Fantastic stay!
Chuck H. from Fenton, MI recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in July, 2015 We were very pleased with our rental experience. The home was clean and as advertised. The ocean view was outstanding. The additional "things" at the house such as golf clubs, wet shoes, boogie boards, et al came in very handy. The house accommodated 7 people comfortably. I would recommend this rental to others.
Rebecca G. from Fort Stockton, TX recommends this property. Stayed for 6 days in June, 2015 The house itself was beautiful and the view was more than we could have asked for. It was a nice surprise to find a sandbox on the lowest level that my 4 yr old absolutely fell in love with! The house has a lot more to offer than described in the ad. Very nice location, perfect place to stay!
A guest from Fort Worth, TX recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in March, 2015 Our party of 4 couples truly enjoyed our stay at this oceanfront home just a short distance from Kona. We were able to see whales & dolphins daily and lots of canoe and boats out on the water. Saw gorgeous sunsets and even when it rained it didn't bother us. There were a couple of maintenance issues but Wayne was quick to reply and get the issues taken care of. Would definitely recommend the home. Very comfortable and everything you need in kitchen for cooking if you choose! Lots of beach towels, snorkel gear & beach mats etc. Thanks for making everything so easy!
A guest from Pocahontas, AR recommends this property. Stayed for 14 days in January, 2015 We were four couples from Arkansas that rented this beautiful house for 2 weeks and we enjoyed every minute of it. The house is everything that we had hoped it would be. Looked just like the pictures and was very, very, well stocked. Kitchen had all that was needed and we were pleasantly surprised at all the beach equipment that was supplied. We definitely recommend this house and would rent it again.
David C. from Aptos, CA recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in December, 2014 We rented the Hale Honu for a family vacation over Chistmas and were delighted by its stunning location. Our group of 8 (0ur adult kids and significant others joined us) were able to walk to great snorkeling, warm up in the hot tub, enjoy meals together at the large dinner table and sit outside on balconies over the crashing waves reading books and sipping tropical drinks. A perfect vacation!
A guest from Lincoln, CA recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in December, 2014 The location cannot be beat - you literally feel like you are on a cruise ship - looking out every window (including one of the showers!), all you see is the beautiful water! Waves were huge the week we were there (Christmas 2014), and we had to close the windows at night to sleep, and even then, you could hear the waves crashing against the rocks below! We saw whales and dolphins off the lanai's. So nice to sit outside with a cup of coffee or a cocktail and enjoy the views and sunsets. There were tons of things to use in the garage (coolers, chairs, umbrellas). Walking distance to the great snorkel beach as well as Magic Sands, but no swimming in front of the house. On the downside (but nothing hampered our trip), the jacuzzi heater wasn't working (but the property mgr worked with us on that), and the air conditioning downstairs didn't work (not a huge deal except when we first got there and it was real stuffy). There is a grocery store real close. Any issues were quickly addressed. We loved our stay at Hale Honu over Christmas! If you go on a snorkel trip, we highly recommend the Fair Winds tour!
John A. from Wilsonville, OR recommends this property. Stayed for 5 days in December, 2014 This is a fantastic home. We loved being close to Kona, snorkeling and boogie boarding. The house is beautiful, with spectacular views of the ocean. Our party of seven would rent this home in the future, if available.
Sandra A. from Glendale, CA recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in November, 2014 A perfect retreat for our family! Hale Honu was well located, spacious and had all the amenities at our fingertips. We left with fond memories of the sound of powerful waves crashing against the lava rocks and the gorgeous sunsets viewed from the outside verandas. Truly a home away from home!
A guest from leander, texas recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in November, 2014 Overall quite relaxing. This was our 4th time in this rental dating back to 2005.There were some issues that didn't meet up to our expected expectations.
Claudia S. from Houston, TX recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in August, 2014 The property was nice and roomy. Kitchen was well stocked. Hot tub and pool were dirty and the hot tub would not heat. Nice to have snorkeling gear in garage. Bathrooms were nice and modern. Need better drawers in full bedroom. Need windows and screens cleaned. Stay was enjoyable.
Marv & Nancy D. from Galesburg, IL recommends this property. Stayed for 6 days in March, 2014 Great location! There were a few minor maintenance issues, with were quickly dealt with by the management company. This is a very nice property. We would rent this again, we had a great time! The only suggestion I would make, is to send a more comprehensive set of instructions prior to arrival.
Juddi B. from Santee, CA recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in March, 2014 We were a party of six adults vacationing on the Big Island to celebrate my retirement. From landing in Kona, to getting our rental car to settling into Hale Honu, we had a smooth and wo derful trip. The instructions for entering the house were easy and without complication. The garage door opener didn't work...batteries? We ended up figuring out a routine that worked just fine for us. The first floor didn't disappoint- the views were stunning. We saw wales, dolphin and great schools of fish. The sunsets were simply spectacular. The kitchen was equipped with everything we needed. Just like my kitchen when guests put things away, we searched a bit to d what we needed. It was actually a little amusing and we ended up finding everything....well stocked kitchen. Would recommend kitchen towels and aprons. As we had stopped by Costco and the grocery store on our way to the house, we had more than enough food for the week. The bedrooms were lovely...all with a balcony facing the ocean. Beds were super comfortable. Plenty of towels. Jacuzzi was a little difficult to get up to temp. We did a lot of driving around the island, went to the King Kamehameha Hotel- very nice. Huggos was a treat for lunch! Loved it. Don the Beachcomber for afternoon drinks and evening snacks. Kona Brewery, Quinns and Splashers great for a small pub crawl. Kona Inn has the best calimari!! Loved downtown. Markets were great and full of nice gift buying items. We would stay at Hale Honu in a heartbeat!!! Wish we could have stayed longer.
A guest from Fox Point, WI recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in February, 2014 We had high expectations for this rental property before we came, and it turned out to surpass our high expectations. It provided lots of space for everyone and included all the extras, including snorkling equipment and more. The temperature was always perfect using the screen doors and fans. We were able to watch dolphins an whales from three different levels. The location was perfect, with easy access to beaches or the town. It couldn't have been better. I wish we had stayed longer.
Mary P. from Newberg, OR recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in January, 2014 We had a lovely time, the location was great, the house had wonderful rooms for four couples with a lanai off each room. Comfortable beds, lots of linens and towels, plenty of beach stuff in the garage available for use. The view off the main lanai was unbeatable and the sliding doors opened the full width of the living room. Unfortunately, lots of things were broken or worn out: torn or missing window screens (some of which were repaired during our stay), a broken stove knob so you couldn't use one of the burners, broken stove fan, many burned out light bulbs, leaky kitchen sink faucet, non-user friendly hot tub (it did work, it was just not clear how it worked, directions were not complete, and it was complicated), not one plug in any of the sinks, the dishwasher soap dispenser cover didn't latch, etc. None of these things were deal killers and we didn't contact the management about them mostly because the one time we did call to figure out the hot tub we weren't called back and by themselves the issues were minimal. The air conditioner was broken which we didn't realize only because we didn't need it, but the repair guy just showed up mid-week and management called to see if they could come in and repair it while we were out. Again, not a big deal, but irritating to have so many easily fixable issues left undone. It felt like no one was paying attention to the basic upkeep of the house.
Zachary M. from Portland, OR recommends this property. Stayed for 9 days in March, 2013 If this home is available for your stay stop looking and reserve it now. It is fully equipped with everything needed (even a stroller, high chairs, and outlet covers). The garage is filled with sports equipment and beach gear, and the snorkeling right out the back door is great. The layout of the main floor is very open and a great place for large groups to relax, and the huge sliding doors make it feel like you are on a 5 million dollar yacht. Seriously this place is fantastic.
Samuel J. from New York, NY recommends this property. Stayed for 5 days in March, 2013 The house was great all around, and the management company was a pleasure to deal with. One thing to note is that the wading pool/hot tub is on the street side of the house (separated from the street by a high wall), not on the ocean side. This didn't affect our enjoyment of the house or the hot tub, but I was expecting the tub to be facing the ocean.
Tony S. from Pittsburg, CA recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in January, 2013 Hale Honu is a great place to stay. The view from the Lanai is truly beautiful and a great place to enjoy meals. The house was clean and very well kept. Everything you need is there except for groceries. Some things I would like to see change:1. The electric gate will not open automatically when you want to leave. Someone has to push the gate button inside the entry way and then another needs to stand by the gate so it doesn't close on you before you get your car out of the garage. I don't know why a gate transmitter is not trusted to renters when the garage door opener is.2. We had an unpleasant visit from the pool boy who accused us of using the swimming pool to clean our sandy dive gear. We had to call the property manager to get him out of there. Very rude and quite insulting to be accused by a kid.3. When you exit, you are asked to put all towels and sheets in the washer and start loads. Seems to me that with a 4 bedroom house and quite a number of sheets, this should be covered in the cleaning fee. Quite strange to do laundry on the day you are leaving especially when you have an early flight. All in all, would recommend but you need to be aware of some quirks.
Property Manager Response: Response from Kona Sunsets Vacation Rentals The gate at Hale Honu has 2 positions. It can close automatically or be put in lock open. It is on a 20 second delay allowing time to exit before it closes. Has been working fine for other guests. The pool boy should not have addressed the guests and he is no longer servicing this property. He found sand in the pool and diving gear nearby and assumed the guests were cleaning it in the pool.We do not ask guests to put all towels and sheets in the washer on departure day. All linens and towels from the previous night can be left as is for the cleaners. We take our reviews seriously andaddress any issues immediately. We are avilable 24/7 to answer any questions or misunderstandings regarding a guest stay at our properties.
Janet M. from West Des Moines, IA recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in December, 2012 15 of our family spent the week after Xmas there!! Ages from 5 to 70. Really well equipped, the kitchen had everything, once you found it. Whales and spinner dolphins from deck. Thanks for the beach towels and water sports toys. The younger kids spent lots of time in the splash pool. Week went too fast
Rose V. from Irving, TX recommends this property. Stayed for 8 days in November, 2012 We have just returned home from 8 wonderful days on the Big Island of Hawaii. This home is far more beautiful than the pictures show. Every room is oceanfront. The sound of the waves crashing on the lava rocks is awesome. We loved the kitchen and had most of our meals there, where we ate on the lani The kitchen is stocked with everything you will need. Plenty of dishes, glasses and cookware. The beds are all good quality, lots of towels and linen. Hot tub was enjoyed by all at the end of a long day of enjoying the sights. One of the best vacations we have had. There were 7 in our party, we had lots of room.
This is a dream house with a fantastic ocean view!
Grace R. from Culver City, CA recommends this property. Stayed for 6 days in October, 2012 This house has it all......close to Kona Village where there is great shopping and food. The kitchen had all the amenities you needed to cook a fabulous meal and a very spacious balcony for an awesome family dinner while overlooking the ocean just feet away. There were plenty of bath and beach towels for 2 families to use. The only thing that needed improvement was the AC because it was a bit too loud while we were sleeping. Otherwise, I would definitely stay here again. Thank you so much for a memorable vacation.
Candi O. from Cameron Park, CA recommends this property. Stayed for 10 days in June, 2012 It has been two months and we are all still raving about how amazing our vacation at Hale Honu was!! It was a beautiful home, and being able to listen to the ocean 24/7 just outside every door and window was an unforgettable experience! There was plenty of room to entertain our family without stepping on each other! We enjoyed every aspect of our vacation...the walk-in shower in the master suite was so amazing! Thank you for providing such a fabulous home to share! If we get the chance to get back to Kona, we will look up the property again! Mahalo!!

Mark M. from Orange, CA recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in April, 2012 We had a great time here. Hearing the ocean right outside was truly a highlight. It was also great being close to many activities in the area including a great "downtown" feel with plenty of places to eat and shop, a great beach to do boogie boarding, and a great snorkling place to swim with sea turtles. I would highly recommend doing the night dives with the manta rays... it was truly amazing!
Robert G. from Castro Valley, CA recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in March, 2012 Wonderful property with lots of sports (fins, snorkels, masks, golf clubs) and baby equipment available for use. Kitchen has everything one could need.
A guest from Pleasant Prairie, WI recommends this property. Stayed for 6 days in February, 2012 The house was wonderful! Location is close to beaches and an easy trip to town. The view from every lanai is great for whale watching or star gazing and all served as a great place to enjoy a cup of coffee or a cocktail. My family especially enjoyed the open air feeling when the the sliding doors were open to the lanai. The kitchen was well stocked with basics for cooking anything. We had 12 (5 children) but never once felt crowded. I would recommend this to anyone.
A guest from Eagle, ID recommends this property. Stayed for 8 days in January, 2012 The downstairs shower was broken while we were there, and maintenance couldn't fix it while we were there. Otherwise the house was great. Well stocked, other than really no beach chairs.
Fred K. from Marblehead, OH recommends this property. Stayed for 22 days in December, 2011 It was just heavenly! Great snorkling right off the shore, sea turtle, dolphins and tons of tropical fish. We even saw whales from the dinner table!!!
A guest from Cedar City, UT recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in August, 2011 The home is a wonderful place to take your family It has everything you would need. The owner of this home has made sure it has all the amenities for all ages need. You could really feel the love in this home love. We all have a wonderful memory for all of our 1st time to Hawaii Thank you
A guest from S,Isbee, Texas recommends this property. Stayed for 9 days in June, 2011 Loved our stay. The house was clean and well stocked. Beautiful view of the ocean. Plenty of linens. Everything we needed was already there. If you gocheck before you go to the store. You will find just about everything you need.A little problem with bugs, but I know they spray for many were dead. There was eight in our party. We had room for everyone. I would recommend this property to anyone who is interested.
Gerald K. from Camp Hill, PA recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in May, 2011 This property is ideal for a group of 6 or 8. There were 8 of us and at no time did we feel cramped. The open architecture and airness of the property gave it a very homey feel.It was well-appointed with all the kitchen necessities to make any type of meal. The view of the ocean from all bedroom decks as well as the one off the living room was great. We'll definitely stay again and give an unqualified recommendation to this property.
Perry H. from Shoreview, MN recommends this property. Stayed for 8 days in March, 2011 We arrived at Hale Honu a few hours after the 2011 Japan Tsunami waves hit the Kona beach. We were anxious about how the house fared. There was no hint of any damage. We stayed one week. With one exception, there was not a single aspect of our stay that did not greatly exceed our expectations. The house was in outstanding shape and thoroughly cleaned. It came fully furnished with everything we would need to enjoy the surf and beaches. The views from every room were outstanding - whales going by almost every day, purposes/dolphins(?) frolicking a hundred yards from the house. Every bedroom with a balcony! A huge kitchen fully stocked with everything to make any meal one could desire. The only glitch we failed to notice was that parties were not allowed. In retrospect, it is understandable and we found that did not get in our way - the restaurants in the neighborhood were more than accommodating.Hale Honu exemplifies the aloha spirit in every way.We hope to return some day.
Jeffrey K. from Greely, Ontario recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in February, 2011 Would recommend to others and will re-book Hale Honu. Property is accurately described. Pictures do not do the location justice. We saw dolphins and humpbacks every day of our stay from the many decks. The swimming and snorkling off the property beach is very good however the rocky entry/exit points would not be suitable for children or weak swimmers due to the surf. The beach a short walk away is sandy and loaded with sea turtles. Fish can be caught off the rocks using local methods. Location cannot be beat as it is close to all amenities of Kona but secluded enough for ample privacy and again, the views from everywhere in the house are spectacular. Only downside is we did not get much use out of the wading pool and hot tub as they not ideally situated (street side) but hot tub is nice for a quick warmup after swimming. Garage is well equipped with alot of extra toys and snorkling gear left behind by former renters. Help yourself to my two fishing poles!
Jacob D. from Lynnwood, WA recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in January, 2011 Hale Honu exceeded my expectations. The view was phenomenal and the wind and sound that come through lanai give the house a real sense of the Hawaiian experience. Value was competitive, condition was acceptable, and there were a lot of little bugs you learn to ignore. Great location just south of downtown Kona.
A guest from Laguna Niguel, CA recommends this property. Stayed for 10 days in July, 2010 We had a great time at Hale Honu. Wayne was very helpful and assisted us the first day we arrived by getting the televisions to work in the second master suite. We loved the sound of the ocean that put us to sleep every night. The rooms were spacious and the home was perfect for the three couples. We couldn't ask for a better vacation spot. Would love to come again. The home is well stocked with condiments, seasonings, towels, dishes, and things to use at the beach. Don't hesitate to select this home. Thanks home owners for a beautiful home and thanks Wayne for your assistance and care to meet our needs.Mahalo.

A guest from Los Angeles, CA recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in April, 2009 A dreamhouse right on the water with a fabulous kitchen and lots of extras like beach chairs and sunscreen. The house was spacious and clean. The dipping pool and jacuzzi were wonderful and it was very close to Kahalu beach park which was great for snorkeling.
Vinu M. from Barrington, RI recommends this property. Stayed for 8 days in October, 2008 This home was absolutely perfect for our stay during Ironman week. Several of us were racing in addition to conducting a great deal of business during the week for the race. The home has a spectacular ocean view and the sound of the waves crashing on shore was wonderful. It took a few nights to get used to, but wow do you get used to it! The home was in wonderful condition and located on the run course. Wayne Twitchell from Coldwell was very helpful throughout the process of securing this location and we couldn't have been more happy with our vacation.
