Los Angeles vacation rentals are a great choice because they give you a home base from which you can explore the city without breaking the budget on expensive hotels. Not only will you have a kitchen and various amenities (pools, hot tubs), but you'll have parking. A car is an absolute necessity when visiting LA since you're dealing with metropolitan area that encompasses five counties. Your best bet is to pick an area that's closest to the things you want to see and do, and plan your travel from that location.

Keep in mind that you have several options for airports to fly into. Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Burbank (BUR), Orange County's John Wayne Airport (SNA) and Long Beach (LGB) are all great choices, depending on where your vacation rental's located.

Beverly Hills is an area most people want to see, if not stay in. It makes for a great base since it's near Hollywood. While the name evokes images of opulent mansions, Beverly Hills does have a section that's strictly middle class. You'll find first-class restaurants and shopping in Beverly Hills, but not a lot of nightlife.

Santa Monica offers great shops, restaurants and bars that are easily walkable. Plus, you'll be near the famous Santa Monica pier and beach. Keep in mind that Santa Monica is a good 45 minutes away from Hollywood.

Studio City emerged as a housing area for people working in the film studios. It's become a trendy and upscale neighborhood where you'll find a concentration of LA's best sushi restaurants. You'll be near the major transportation arteries (the 101 and 405 freeway), but be sure to familiarize yourself with Los Angeles rush hour patterns before making any firm travel plans around the city
