The Bahamas is an island chain that runs south 760 miles from just southeast of Florida into the Caribbean. There are 700 islands, though only 30 are inhabited. You'll also find 2,400 coral reefs to explore, the largest being the Andros Barrier Reef. The Bahamas is officially part of the British Commonwealth (Commonwealth of the Bahamas).

Junkanoo Festival
Ever get the post Christmas blues? Or maybe you just want to get away during the Holidays. Either way, Junkanoo in the Bahamas may be the festival you need to brighten up your winter. Junkanoo is like Carnaval and Mardi Gras, except that it starts the day after Christmas and runs through New Years Day. You'll see wild and elaborate costumes, dance routines to Bahamian rythms, brass bands, drums, conch horns and lots of parties and fun.

Coral Reefs
While Junkanoo lasts a week, the coral reefs off the Bahamas are there all year round. In fact, the Andros Barrier Reef is the third largest in the world. Exploring it fully may require expert skills, but no worries if you're a first timer or casual snorkeler as there are easier, more shallow areas to dive into. Don't forget your underwater camera--it's illegal to bring back souvenirs from the reef itself.

Rack 'n Scrape
Cat Island is the place to hear authentic, native Bahamian music called Rake 'n Scrape. Musicians use instruments made of whatever's available--a saw, tin tubs and string, plastic jugs filled with pebbles, and other items put to an inventive and beautiful sounding use.

Pink Sand
Head to Eleuthra, Harbour Island or Cat Island to find lovely and enticing pink sand beaches. The pink coloration comes from tiny sea creatures that live on the coral reefs. Their shells are crushed by waves and wash up on to the beach.

The Bahamas features many more things to see and do--fishing, island exploring, restaurants, shopping and, of course, relaxing by the beach or pool.
