WE WELCOME YOUR INQUIRIES
This is a family owned Canadian summer cottage on Indian Lake in the heart of cottage country and the Rideau waterway system. It is on a private dead end road, the cottages here have been in the same families for years. This is near the scenic Chaffey's Locks.
The area is known for its crystal clear lakes that are interlinked by the historic Rideau waterway system which recently celebrated the 175th anniversary of the opening of the Rideau Canal, North America's oldest continuously operating waterway. In 2007, The Rideau waterway system was designated a World Heritage Site and stretches from Ottawa to Kingston.
Indoor amenities
There are 3 cottages, one for living and entertaining and two cottages for sleeping. A two acre beautiful and private treed site with a rock garden and outdoor patio for barbequing, relaxing and bird watching. This property was renovated in 2003, with all new systems and décor. It sleeps 8 with two extra day beds on the porch. Of the five bedrooms: One bedroom has a cathedral ceiling with a queen bed, the second has a cathedral ceiling and a double bed (they share a full bath with tub), the third bedroom has two single beds with a private full bathroom, the fourth has a single bed with its own private bathroom with shower and last (but not least) ‘Blue Heaven’ is the original cabin with a single bed, its own small blue cathedral ceiling and full bathroom with tiled shower.
All the bathrooms are new with white fixtures and white tiles.
There is parking on the circular drive for 5 plus cars.
A gourmet open kitchen is surrounded by a screened-in porch with views of the lake and a large curved counter one can sit at to entertain the chef. All new stainless steel appliances, including a new stainless BBQ (with extra burners) outside on the private patio. Adjacent is a laundry room with new front load washer and dryer. A small extra bar fridge sits out on the porch.
A cathedral ceiling with new fireplace is in the main cottage with views of the lake and the passing boats. Games are included to play on the handsome original 1950's vintage bridge table that extends out into a games table, for laying out jigsaw puzzles. A bookcase with books for all interests is in the living room to enjoy during your stay. The cottage has a new 32" LCD TV hooked up to the satelite dish on the roof.
Outdoor amenities
For birders, there are chickadees, goldfinches, woodpeckers (including the spectacular pileated woodpeckers, which have been known to visit the patio on a summer morn) blue jays and of course the tiny hummingbirds, which zoom by one’s head to the feeder on the patio every day. The osprey also nests in the area and blue herons and loons are all around the lake.
The loons are the signature sound of an evening in Canadian cottage country.
There is an outdoor ping pong table for the kids, next to the 'magic' door (see picture). Where the door 'leads' is up to one's imagination !
Down at the dock, the water is clear and warm and ideal for swimming, boating, kayaking, windsurfing etc. or just lounging, watching the sun go down. Boats can be rented from the local marina.
There are two boathouses and a kayak for guest use.
The Cataraqui Trail, a famous hiking trail, is accessed a 5 minute walk away. It follows the old railway line. Or just hike down the cottage roads and see the other cottages and all the different views of the lake.
Local Amenities
There is an excellent private caterer Veronika who lives right in the locks ( 2 minutes away) that can deliver custom delights for any occasion. You can plan any kind of menu and she will do her magic. Sometimes, delivery is by boat. She is a gem.
Or have dinner out one night within walking distance at the historic Opinicon Lodge with superb meals in their old-fashioned dining room.
The local village has excellent shopping for supplies, including a great grocery store, liquor store, antique stores, a drug store, etc. Brown's store in the locks, within walking distance, now has a liquor store in it and movie rentals also.
Day trips
Day trips can include: a drive to Ottawa, the nation’s capital, a 90-minute scenic drive; a boat cruise on the famous Thousand Islands, from Gananoque to visit Boldt castle; a drive to the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton, NY, a 90-minute drive including a picturesque ferry ride over the St.Lawrence river; a visit to the picturesque towns of Perth or Merrickville for lunch and antiquing or Kingston’s downtown on Lake Ontario, a 40 minute drive south.
There is nothing better than a vacation at a Canadian lake-front cottage for all ages.
