Nestled in a redwood forest near Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, on the bank of the "Wild and Scenic" Smith River, this cabin is perfect for serious fishing, family vacations, honeymoons, retreats or just a quiet place to relax and enjoy nature. This log cabin was built in the 1930's as a fishing cabin. It has since been upgraded, but it still has a wonderfully rustic, comfortable feel to it. The cabin is about 10 miles inland from the coast, barely a mile from Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, and right on the bank of the undamned, "Wild and Scenic" Smith River. We have easy river access to one of the best steelhead and salmon fishing spots on the Smith. Last year two of our guests hooked 22 steelhead in one day. In November you can reliably see salmon spawning right below the cabin. This cabin is very private. The closest house is over 200 feet from the cabin and impossible to see through the trees. You are surrounded by a forest and a river. It's like having your own private park with all the comforts of home. Close by are miles of fern-lined trails through ancient redwoods. If you want to touch and be touched by an ancient redwood forest, this is the place to come. The Smith River is unbelievably beautiful. It is protected in its natural state throughout its length, is crystal clear and perfect in the summer for swimming, canoeing (canoe available--no charge), tubing, rafting, cut-throat trout fishing or just sun bathing on a sandy beach in front of the cabin. You might also enjoy the wildlife. This area is still mostly the way God made it. It is common to see osprey, otters, mergansers, kingfishers, sandpipers, dippers and even an occasional bald eagle. In the spring the wildflowers are awesome. If you like blackberries, late July through mid-August is when you want to be here. We are about a 20 minute drive from the coast and some spectacular beaches. These beaches are dog friendly with lots of drift wood-- perfect for evening campfires and roasting hot dogs. Fishing in the fall and winter is what this cabin was built for. Unfortunately, you need to get reservations in early for this time of year. The cabin is also a perfect home base for exploring this part of the world. It is a 30 minute drive to the start of the famous Oregon Coast Scenic Highway, with day trips to the Oregon Dunes, Oregon Caves, Sea Lion Caves, Ashland Summer Theater, Britt Festival, jet boat rides up the Klamath and Rogue Rivers and many other adventures. The weather here is absolutely some of the best in the country. Scientific American recently ranked Del Norte County in the top five counties in the United States for the best weather. We have mild summers(60's to 80's) and mild winters (40's to 60's). We average about 90 inches of rain a year and that comes between November and May. But no one minds the rain; if you're a fisherman, you love the it! There is much more about this cabin you will find delightful. Call or email me and I can direct you to our web page.
