Originally one of the large landholdings owned by the Rockefeller family, Gouverneur Bay Estate’s 70 acres, with its 1000 feet of beachfront, are nestled in a deep cove, assuring a paramount level of privacy and tranquility. It would be a unique venue for any number of special gatherings, celebrations, or events. First developed over forty years ago by previous Franco-American owner Frank Goelet, it’s designed like a Balinese village with a number of bungalows and pavilions strategically located throughout the property. Some of the original structures were sourced from Indonesia and have been extensively and lovingly restored by the current owner. Other, newer structures and statuary were built in Indonesia as well. The stone paths and walls that ramble throughout the acres of exquisite tropical gardens are all created from local stone found in the bay A focal point of the estate is the main pool and entertainment area. Spacious, with numerous areas to sit or lounge, it has a fully-equipped kitchen with a barbeque and a large table for outdoor dining. At the opposite end, an Indonesian deity presides over a swim-up bar. The sound system here with its in-water speakers is amazing and other features include a small stage and outdoor rear-projection screen for DVD viewing from in or around the pool. The estate offers sleeping accommodations for 10, in 4 separate bungalows. The Master Bungalow with its King bedroom is very special and boasts an enormous air-conditioned bath en suite with a walk-in closet, an elegant free-standing, soaking tub and an outdoor shower pour deux. It is just adjacent to the estate’s second pool with its beautiful natural waterfall. The Beach Bungalow is located at the opposite end of the property and near the main pool; it has a King bedroom with bath en suite. Both bungalows are within 50 feet of the ocean and one of the estate’s two private accesses to Gouverneur Beach, considered by many to be the island’s most beautiful – and intimate. Two Mountain Bungalows are terraced into the hillside with panoramic views of the bay. They each contain a large King bedroom and a smaller, single bedroom; both have baths en suite. All of the bungalows have covered verandas - perfect for relaxing and listening to the sound of the surf. And each has a small refrigerator and everything needed to make and enjoy a morning cup coffee – so guests need not venture out of their private domain. Other common areas include a pavilion encompassing a large living room, exotically furnished in keeping with the Indonesian décor, it is whimsically nicknamed the Lizard Lounge. It has a great, fun bar and a private alcove for private conversations. This pavilion also includes a guest bath with a shower. A large professional caterer's kitchen, with discrete service entrance areas, allows larger scale dinners or events to be staged and the beach parking lot has a 40-50 car capacity For tennis enthusiasts, there are two flood-lit Har-Tru courts; one being a practice court with a ball-machine. A little refrigerator close by is just one of the many little touches that contribute to making this one of St. Barth’s most special properties. Legend has it that the famous local pirate Monbars hid his treasure somewhere in Gouverneur Bay, but we feel this estate itself is the real treasure.
