Alet-les-Bains is a beautiful historic village with excellent facilities for holidaymakers. It is situated by the river in the Aude valley, about 30mins drive from the spectacular medieval city of Carcassonne and about 45mins from the Pyrenees. It is in the heart of 'Cathar Country' within easy reach of the historic and spectacular Cathar castles. Alet was settled by the Romans because of its favourable climate and warm springs. A medieval abbey and city grew up on the site - the houses remain intact, including the one where Nostradamus lived, and the ruins of the abbey can be visited. The former bishop's palace is now a lovely hotel and restaurant. Alet is 10 mins drive from the famous village of Rennes le Chateau, known for its mysterious past, including links to 'The Da Vinci Code' and the treasure of the Knights Templars. The anthropological site and museum of Tautavel are also nearby. The area provides endless opportunities for spectacular mountain biking, riding, watersports and other outdoor activities. A number of friendly family ski resorts are within 1- 2 hour's drive (downhill and cross country). Visit the wine producers of the Corbières, Fitou, Rivesaltes, Banyuls as well as the local Blanquette de Limoux and Malèperes. The house is just outside the walls of the ancient part of the village, less than five minutes walk from the lovely village swimming pool (fed continuously by natural spring water), tennis court and the river with its shady island equipped for picnics and barbecues.
