Flora's House on the Applecross Peninsula (West Coast Highlands).
|
|
The cottage was converted from a substantially stone built croft house in 1970-80 into a well-designed family house. It stands in a prime position elevated alongside Kenmore burn, commanding fantastic views over Loch Torridon towards Beinn Alligin, Liathach and Beinn Eighe. There are ten houses in the township of Kenmore and there is a public telephone, within one minutes walking distance of the cottage.
The cottage is fully equipped and comfortable throughout. The kitchen has a built in electric oven with a grill, ceramic hob, fridge, freezer, microwave, electric kettle, toaster, slow cooker, stainless steel sink unit, All cutlery, crockery and cooking utensils are provided.
The sitting room has a sofa & two easy chairs and an L-shaped window seat taking full advantage of the views. It also has a Baxi grate open fire with a back boiler for hot water and an electric immersion heater. Also in the sitting room on the deeply recessed window sills there is a colour TV and a C.D./ radio-cassette player plus C.D's. There are also some family board games.
In the dining area there is a yew dining table and six chairs, plus a Jotul wood burning stove. The downstairs bathroom has a full sized bath, washbasin, toilet and heated towel rail.
We do have Sky TV - If guests want to they can bring their own viewing cards with them and watch the channels that they subscribe to at home.
On some occasions - during the evenings a family of Pine Marten’s visit the cottage from their den in the woods. Our guests at the cottage have been treating the Pine Marten’s to custard cream biscuits, bird nuts and they are also partial to Jam sandwiches!... Pine Martens are very shy creatures, but are happy to come close to the cottage when all is quiet outside - one was even seen sitting on the window ledge watching our visitors inside.
Please note that bedding is provided, but not linen. Please bring sheets, pillow cases, towels and tea towels.
Upstairs there is a second bathroom. There are three bedrooms sleeping up to a maximum of five people. - (1 x double, 1 x twin & 1 single). In the small store room there is a spare folding bed and mattress and a fold away travel cot.
To the rear of the cottage is a narrow store room with an automatic washing machine. There is ample car parking space adjacent to the garden gate.
The Torridon-Applecross area is renowned for it's scenic beauty, ideal for walking, climbing , bird watching and fishing (both sea and fresh water). Shieldaig is 7 miles away with a couple of shops and a licensed hotel. Applecross is approx. 15 miles/25 minutes drive, where excellent food can be had, Applecross also has a Store/Post Office and a pub. The nearest petrol stations are at Applecross opposite the Post Office and at Annat on the A896 next to the Bar/ Bistro called Ben Damph Lodge- (next to the torridon Hotel)- which is open during the summer months only for Bar meals & petrol. There is a petrol / service station at "Lochcarron" - this being the cheapest petrol provider in the area.
Please note that £550-00 (British Pounds) will be charged at other peak holiday periods - such as;- Easter Weeks School half term weeks Bank Holiday Weeks
VISITOR COMMENTS:-
Mr & Mrs Barrett & family (23rd May - 30th May 2009)
We've just got back (sadly) from a great week and wanted to thank you for our wonderful holiday. Floras House is super, what a position and everything was spot on. The weather has been a bit mixed but the last two days were amazing. Thank you again for a fantastic cottage.
Steve & Jackie (16th August - 23rd August 2008)
Flora's House is a most delightful cottage in every respect; we found it had the feel of an old Scottish cottage, it was both cosy and practical. I have stayed in 4 cottages now in Wester Ross and I have to say that Flora's House is the best yet. The view from Flora's House is unbeatable especially at sunset when the Torridon mountains are backlit in a most amazing warm, red glow - stunning. It was good to have no direct neighbours and to have an amazing view from the front windows; we really felt a part of nature. In short, the only thing missing was another week !
V. Jones from Wales (26th July - 2nd August 2008) Came in need of sanctuary and discoverd just that amidst the breathtaking views and tranquil pace. This is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in the world.
Anne & Derek (12th July - 19th July 2008) We really enjoyed our week, despite the daily showers. We had a magic moment one evening when we sat in the sunshine at the side of the bay in Kenmore and watched two dolphins swim right across the bay in front of us.
Sarah & Frank (9 week stay - April & May 2008) Thankyou so much for the use of your beautiful cottage. It was just what the doctor ordered!. So peaceful and such a magical setting. We saw so much wildlife & had a wonderful time. Our stay was a wonderful experince and life has taken on a better hue.
