Sites of historical interest in Syracuse include Greek Theatre, part of the archaeological park, where classical performances take place during the months of May & June. Furthermore, they are part of this archaeological park the Roman amphitheatre, the Ear of Dionysius and Ara of Ierone. The museum possesses one of the most important archaeological collections in Sicily. The Cathedral, located in the heart of Ortigia, dates back to 1728, and includes parts of the Temple of Norman eighth century.
The Baroque cities of Noto, Modica and Ragusa Ibla Ispica are easily accessible. Popular tourist towns such as Taormina, Giardini Naxos and Letojanni are north of Catania. The grandeur of Mount Etna, often visible from Syracuse, offers several opportunities for hiking.
