The house has been fashioned on a 'waluwa' manor house and great sensitivity has been used during the construction. Antique doors, window frames and tiles; ..a nod to the vernacular architecture in which only local materials were used, crossed with a quasi-Palladian facade, and the whole topped by a tiered, pagoda-style roof floating above mock Corinthian pillars, the overall impression is one of simplicity, fostered by the generous and uncluttered use of internal and external space, and a fabulous terrace commanding 180 degree ocean views.
There are 4 ensuite bedrooms off the large central living area and a vaulted 'tunnel-like' 5th bedroom located under the terrace. The garden is terraced and on one sits a long strip infinity pool and 2 covered cool areas to sit and watch the passing ships or drift to where ever your heart desires. Steps lead down the cliff to a manicured lawn and bbq area and the private gate onto the beach.
Old painted Indian temple doors, antique bookcases and cabinets and colonial furniture; woven coconut lining a wooden roof; kitu wood-barred windows topped with old latticework; floaty four poster beds in air conditioned rooms and plaster sheets diffusing wall lighting - even the pale pink exterior paint: everything combines to create an aura of romance and tranquility. This villa joins the very few in Sri Lanka that are amongst the best in Asia.
Sitting area
Inside the living room; on the terrace; in one of the garden pagodas; by the pool; or down on the 'beach' lawn. Simply find your spot and dream away.
Dining area
A dining table can be set up in the house or on the terrace.
Kitchen / Staff
A modern kitchen of shiny granite, dark jackwood and terracotta tiles is housed in a separate block. A cook plus 3 male staff are assisted by one 'room-girl.' Cocktails anyone?
Meals
Continental breakfast is provided and all other meals are for your account. Discuss with the cook what is available (we advise avoiding red meat) - there are fresh fish markets daily but give a day or two notice for lobster. Small supermarkets for imported items in Galle or Matara (about 25 mins).
Pool
A long strip infinity pool perched on a terrace.
Location
About 40 mins south of Galle in Mirissa.
Area
About 40 mins further south from busy Galle, Mirissa has one of the most beautiful coastlines with palm fringed beaches along the whole of the south coast of this fabulous island. For shopping / restaurants you may have to head into Galle although there is a Dutch Fort in Matara (much larger than Galle) about 25 mins further south. For a temple visit there is one next door to the villa and several others a few km inland.
