A beautifully reconstructed ancient tower, Torre Dei Cavalieri, once the property of the Maltese Knights (hence the name) is located in the heart of Birgu (named Vittoriosa after the victory over the Turks in 1565) and overlooks the most elegant harbour in Malta – the Grand Harbour marina – with stunning views over the waterfront. Adjacent to the oldest and most historical buildings (St. Lawrence – the Knights’ original Cathedral; The Inquisitors’ Palace, the Auberges of Provence, Auvergne, Italy, England, etc.), the tower is made of the typical honey-coloured sandstone (globigerina) and comprises two wings, one sleeping 7 and the other 4/5.

The larger wing has a very spacious kitchen (and separate wc) with those wonderful sea views. The lift takes you to the three bedrooms: the main double bedroom (queen size bed) has its own bathroom (tub), the other two twinbedded rooms share a shower & wc. A comfortable sofabed is provided. The lift then takes you to the very ample and stunning drawing-room with terrace and picture window over St.Lawrence’s church and waterfront. Parking is provided free of charge in the garage (larger wing) and the house private parking, outside (smaller wing – one spot).

The smaller wing has its kitchen on the ground floor, with steps leading up to the very tastefully decorated dining/living area (sofa bed) with two twin-bedded rooms and bathroom with tub, shower and bidet. This wing also has its own smaller terrace overlooking the harbour.

Both wings have washing machines, air conditioning and well-equipped kitchens. A card telephone and free 'round-the-clock broadband wifi internet connection are provided. Parking is provided free of charge in the garage (larger wing) and the house private parking, outside (smaller wing – one spot).

Torre Dei Cavalieri is one of the most prestigious locations of the whole island, right next door to the Casino di Venezia, with its excellent restaurant. There are several wine-bars and a water-taxi service which operates all day including evenings to Valletta. The area is the oldest of Malta, dating back to before 1565 (when Sultan Soleiman the Great and his admiral Dragut attempted in vain to invade) and was defended by the forts of St. Angelo – thereafter the site of the British Royal Navy for many years and now that of the Order of St. John and St. Elmo.

Among places of interest to visit in Valletta are the co-Cathedral (with the only signed painting by Caravaggio) and the Knights’ Palace, with a very fine collection of firearms and Gobelin tapestries, gifts of the Grand Masters. The old ”Silent City” of Mdina is a must, with its wonderful cathedral and unforgettable architecture. There are many restaurants and bars well worth stopping at, in particular the Xara Palace (“Relais des Chateaux”) which has a very good outside “trattoria”.

"This is a lovely, well priced house in an excellent location. There was no street noise. Communication with the owner prior was great & the caretaker he has looking after the place insisted we contacted them if we needed anything & the place was immaculately clean. It's a beautiful, spacious old building & every bedroom (we had both places for 10 people) was nice & a good size, there was 3 bathrooms & a further toilet. the living area is on the top floor, so didn't make any noise for the bedrooms. The view is SPECTACULAR - the photos don't do it justice. As we were there in winter so we didn't use the terrace much but in summer this would be amazing. The area is the lovely, 2 mins walk from the house is a prommenade with 6-7 restaurants all with outdoor seating right on the Grand Canal, we went to 'Two and a half Lemon' on new years eve which was well priced & good fun. We went for 5 days & didn't do too much apart from relaxing, a harbour cruise in a water taxi which leaves from just outside the house, a boat trip to Valetta (5 mins by water taxi) & wandered Vittoriosa. "I just returned from an 8 day stay at this gorgeous property with 8 other women colleagues visiting Malta for the first time for an international meeting held in Valletta, the capital city just across the harbor. The accommodations were spotless, linens fresh and plenty, the common spaces (kitchen, dining area and loft-like space on the top floor) provided us just the right mix to fit our mood for a delicious meal prepared in the modern kitchen, conversation, and or to be all together. We really enjoyed sitting on the balcony on the third floor evenings overlooking the harbor and the Valletta skyline. The owner and the on-site manager were kind, professional, and always responded immediately to any request/question. The on-site manager graciously arranged for transportation with Marshall's, a local car service which I highly recommend. In between attending meetings this car service took us to sites we selected from many to choose while in Malta. The drivers were informed about each site and provided great information for our stay. They couldn't have been more accommodating. If you're a traveler, than you understand what I mean when I say this location provides the experience of "tasting the local life". You are steps away from the square where you can meet the shop keepers and purchase local market ingredients, buy a bottle of local wine, olive oil or freshly made cheese. There are many choices to eat a meal out on the harbor below the property. We fell in love with Del Borgo, a winebar/wineshop/cafe just up the street near the square. It became our local place for a meal, a glass of wine, and conversation with the owner and staff. We decided to spend out last evening there because we had made friends we wanted to share it with. I highly recommend this property - we were a group of 9 but I could comfortably see my family of 4 enjoying it for my planned return trip to Malta. If you are looking for a unique property situated in a great location that reflects the uniqueness of Malta's historical beauty, the warmth of her people, and a sense of becoming part of a local community - this is it." "Our stay here was well worth paying a little more than normal for an apartment. We were discovering Malta for the first time. The island is steeped in history and to stay in a Knights Templar's castle added to the magic. The location is excellent looking over the marina. Close to shops and very good restaurants offering the true tastes of Malta. The tourist bus and the local buses stop within 100 metres. The water taxi is a just over the road. "Our family of 10, 4 children ranging in age from 18 months to 11 years, 2 sets of parents and 1 set of grandparents, stayed quite comfortably in the Torre at the beginning of March, which this winter was off season. The weather was in the 50's, occasionally low 60 and sunny to overcast. Robert, who supervises the property, met us at the airport and guided our two cars to Birgu. Traveling in Malta by car is not for the faint hearted. It took a week for us to feel comfortable negotiating our way "home". Birgu or Vittoriosa is a beautiful residential area with a yacht filled harbor, which the tower overlooks. The accommodations are clean and comfortable, but by no means luxurious. There is a narrow winding stair case and an elevator which takes you to the piano mobile, the large living room, dining room. The two apartments are completely separate but accessible through a common lobby. My younger son, his wife and two little children stayed in the smaller apartment. There is a garage for a compact car and a parking space for another car immediately outside. There are small shops and a wonderful bakery nearby. A supermarket is a few km away.
Along the harbor are several restaurants, several of which are not open early in the season. Also, the casino is a 5 minute walk along the harbor. One aspect about which we were warned is the cost of electricity. Both heat in the winter and a/C during the summer are electric and expensive. We were careful but still spent over $120 for the week. The third or middle floor has a large master suite and bathroom and two smaller bedrooms with a joining bathroom. The beds were comfortable and the linens and towels, adequate. When we had a problem with the washing machine (no instructions), Robert was prompt and helpful. During early March the traffic was manageable. Going from Birgu to the Ferry to Gozo takes about an hour, because of the heavy traffic through Valleta. During the summer when the Marthas Vineyard sized island doubles its population, traffic and driving can be a big problem. For our needs, Torre dei Cavalieri worked out very well. We were able to see all the important sites, of which there are many, in our one week. If one vacations during the summer, the beaches are far away.
