If you need to be in Bologna either for business of leisure (or both), you should definitely pick The Berries as the place to stay. It is a clean, cozy, very quiet, typical 1920’s Bolognese family house gifted with a great atmosphere and located in a popular and safe, convenient and colorful neighborhood only about 18-19 minutes from Piazza Maggiore, the very heart of Bologna.
About 12-13 minutes to the Fiera District, the University, the Opera House, the fashion & gourmet district and all the major spots in town, no more than 20 minutes to the train station, The Berries features a safe (fenced and gated) garden, a perfect space for your children to play and for you to relax and enjoy your time at this friendly rental.
As for the layout, The Berries comfortably sleeps a total of five in two bedrooms at the floor level (master bedroom: 1 queen size bed; bedroom #2: 3 twins, 2 in a bunk bed, with en-suite bathroom). Light-filled and roomy, The Berries also features a fairly large lounge with a comfortable dining space, a functional kitchen, 2 bathrooms (of which one en-suite with the 3-twin room), a nice hallway and a veranda. Free, safe parking can be found in the street. A washing machine and a TV/DVD set are provided along with a complete set of kitchen tools, crockery and all the necessary household items. "We had a wonderful time exploring Bologna, Venezia, Faenza, Ferrara, and surrounding areas from our base at "The Berries." Giuseppe Pelle proved to be an extremely helpful and cordial host, promptly answering our requests for assistance. Though the location is a bit removed from the centro, it is a very easy commute to the commercial/historical areas on the #13 bus just a few minutes from the apartment. There is also the #36 that goes to the train station, but it takes longer to get to the centro. The lodgings are clean and contain everything one needs to function independently, including fully equipped kitchen w/oven (unusual) and a washing machine and iron. Wifi worked 100% of the time and we were very reliant on it as Internet cafes no longer proliferate. I would suggest that if you choose to stay in the non-tourist oriented area, you have some basic knowledge of Italian. It will enhance your experience greatly, although it may not be required. There is a good pizza place in the closest commercial area to the apartment on Via Murri - turn left at the intersection of Via Murri & Via delle Fragole, and several nice cafes. There is a Coop small grocery store just around the corner, and a nice produce/meat/fish market just a few blocks away if you turn right on Via Murri, the Mercatino di Chiesa Nuova. We like to walk, so it is also possible to walk to the centro if time is not a concern, only about 5K to the train station and less to the porticos that the city isknown for. Try a. F. Tamburini near the two towers for a wonderful sampling of cheeses and ham/salami. We also recommend a day trip to the International Museo di Ceramiche in Faenza if you are so inclined. Faenza is a great little town. Also recommend Mezzaluna on Via Terranuova if you go to Ferrara- it was fabulous, best meal we had in Italy in two weeks. We did not view the room downstairs and cannot comment on its condition/suitability." (Patricia M., USA)
"We had a very relaxing stay. The apartment was very clean, spacious and well equipped. The shower was nice and hot and had good pressure. It is a short and scenic bus ride to the centre and busses come every eight minutes. Would definitely stay there again. For people who are light sleepers it is a perfect location as it is a quiet location day and night." (Frances P., Australia)
"The apartment is clean, quiet, roomy and light-filled. Everything is in good working order, well-stocked kitchen, impeccable bathrooms, free wifi. The owners are nice folks living some 20 minutes from the house, friendly and always eager to help. Nice neighborhood with plenty of stores, pizzerias and a pretty veggie market in the back of the house. Excellent connections with the center of town. Pretty small garden (share), friendly atmosphere. Definitely recommended for a family with children - safe and comfortable. Excellent price." (Stacey M., USA)
"We just returned from a great 8 days vacation in Bologna. We stayed at this apartment and really love it. It is true that the location is not central, but this is actually a good opportunity if you have a car and want to drive around without parking and traffic problems. Buses, however, are very frequent and the ride to Piazza Maggiore is only 12-13 minutes. The neighbourhood is nice and typical Bolognese, with a great veggie market at the corner and a few small trattorias providing a good alternative to cooking inside. As for the apartment, we loved its size and cleanliness. Everything was working fine, wifi too, and the kids were happy with the garden. Beds were comfortable and the quiet was total both during the day and the night. Great helpful owners too. Last but not least, the price - definitely lower than the average, a great value for your money. Don't miss it!" (Philippe D, Belgium)
"My partner and I stayed at The Berries for 11 weeks during an autumn sabbatical at the University of Bologna. The apartment was clean and tidy, very convenient to amenities including the nearby market, supermarket and several good bus routes, and our hosts were inobtrusive but very responsive to any small problems we had. The neighbourhood is safe and the locals friendly, but people used to living in quiet houses in the middle of the woods will need to adjust to the inevitable noises of living in an apartment building in the middle of an Italian city. Bologna itself is a fantastic place to base yourself - the city is charming and grows on you quickly, the food is very good, and the rail connections to everywhere excellent. Don't bother with a car is our advice. Buon viaggio!" (Matthew C., New Zealand)
"Appartement agreable et propre, bien équipé les enfants sont trés content d'y etre allé, le proprietaire et sa famille sont trés gentil et serviable beaucoup trop de chose à visiter en une semaine c'est pourquoi il va faloir y revenir!!!" (Thierry P., France)
"Pretty, cosy not far from the heart of the historical center of Bologna, no more than 50 meters from a nice open-air veggie market and a couple of excellent pizzerias. It is located on a very quiet street, so there are no problems with noise after a day of sightseeing when you need some rest. All the tourist attractions can be easily reached by bus. The appartment is very clean, light-filled and everything works well. Its nice, homey atmosphere makes it perfect for a family. One of the main advantages of the flat is that it is perfectly equipped with dishes, cutlery, pans etc - all the stuff you need to cook not just a simple breakfast, but even the most elaborated dishes of the celebrated Bolognese cuisine. Sebastiano, the flat owner, is very friendly and helpful, and does his best to make the stay of his guests even more comforatble. Great price too! We would definitely recommend staying in this appartment." (Piotr A., USA)
"Our family of 5 stayed at this rental for 2 weeks in October 2012 and loved it! The house is very clean and comfy, light and bright, with a great family atmosphere to it. Giuseppe and Sebastiano were more than helpful, treated us like old friends and were always available when needed. The area is pretty, safe and very friendly, a true Bolognese neighborhood with an open-air veggie market and plenty of stores nearby. It is true that this accommodation is not centrally located, but Piazza Maggiore is easily reachable in a few minutes by bus -- absolutely no need for a car, which is a plus given the congested Bologna traffic. Everything worked fine and we were pleasantly surprised by what we got for that (low) price. Absolutely recommended." (Igor N., USA)
"The apartment is comfortable and fairly large and the environment is quiet and very colorful. The flat is close to a main avenue and bus stop to city center. Everything is at hand. Finally, the landlords are very friendly and helpful." (Franck C., France)
"A very clean accommodation with everything at hand. Roomy enough for 6 or even 7, very pleasant atmosphere, good price, nice landlord. We recommend it highly" (The Simmons, Ft Lauderdale, FL, USA)
"My six month stay = If you want to feel like an Italian when you are on vacation, Bologna in Emilia Romagna is the area and “the Berries” apartment is the place to stay. The Berries is located in a wonderful, safe, convenient neighborhood just 10- 15 minutes by bus to the city center or an easy 30 minute walk to the Santo Stefano Gate. Two blocks from the apartment you can catch the #36 Bus that takes you directly to the train station. This makes Florence, Venice, Rome and the hill towns of Tuscany an easy train trip. You can shop each day for your fresh dinner at the many local family run shops or dine at the neighborhood Pizzeria or Restaurants. The apartment is well supplied with the basics and great for singles (because of the safety) families (because of activities close by) and 2 couples (because you have great space in the apartment). Come to “the Berries in Bologna” and enjoy an Italian Vacation that you never dreamed possible. There is fresh everything at your door step: pasta, fruits, vegetables, meats, fish and, of course, great Italian wines and cheese." (Katie D. - USA)
"Casa in perfette condizioni, bella, accogliente, pulitissima e conforme alla descrizione. Proprietari gentili e molto disponibili. Ottimi collegamenti con il centro, raggiungibile in brevissimo tempo. Consigliatissima!!!" (Paolo T. - Italy)
"We had a very plesant stay in the apartment, It was very near the centre of the city, The appartment was nice and clean. Only the upper neighbours were a bit noisy one evening, but that was all!" (Petra P., The Netherlands)
"This was our third time in Bologna so we decided to rent a non-centrally located apartment for a change. We found it was a terrific idea! Almost no traffic, a nice open-air food market and plenty of great trattorias and pizzerias in this neighborhood, a great public pool at walking distance with the bus getting us everywhere in town in minutes. Our family of 5 enjoyed The Berries very much, with the children being able to safely play in the garden. The apartment is spacious and clean, with a special atmosphere about it, like living at relatives and we felt like family. Guiseppe and Sebastiano are the nicest persons in the world, always eager to help (they booked a taxi for us at 5 in the morning when we needed it!) and their house has everything one needs. Do not miss this rental!!!" (Karin K., Denmark)
"The home was comfortable. The landlord was there to meet us and give us the information we needed for our stay. The Basement room is fine for kids or adults who are ok with a climb down interesting stairs. The location is a pretty significant walk from downtown, and about 10 minute walk to some restaurants. There is market just around the corner which was nice." (Lynae B., Germany)
"I would highly recommend The Berries for anyone wishing to visit Bologna and live in a real Bolognese neighbourhood. The apartment is comfortable, extremely quiet, and well maintained. The neighborhood is family-oriented, safe, and dotted with beautiful pine trees. There are excellent shops and restaurants nearby, including a supermarket, a terrific pizzeria, a fresh pasta place, and several cafes and gelaterie. Frequent bus service to the historic center is steps from the apartment. The owner and his family are extremely helpful. The bedrooms are large. The living/dining/kitchen area is cosy but functional and the kitchen is well-equipped. It was great having a washing machine and reliable wifi. The apartment is especially suited for families, and there is a nice courtyard which would be convenient for small children." (Erin JC, Canada)
"This rental came across almost by chance - a friend who had stayed there talked me into booking it and - what a great surprise! We - a Belgian family of 5 - got one of the cleanest, widest, brightest and nicest apartment ever. Sebastiano - the owner - and Giuseppe - his son - are great people. They are always eager to help should one need them and treated us like family, waiting for us even it was way after hour (we were very late on arrival) and presenting us with a wonderful basket of fresh fruit, which was highly appreciated.
The house is clean, with a lot of room and light. A typical Italian family house, very warm, quiet and super-comfortable, it features an intriguing den room which is very cool to sleep in the hot season and everything one may expect from a good rental, and more. Actually the photos don't do this apartment justice - it is much roomier and the surrounding fenced garden very pretty, perfect for the kids to safely play. We all enjoyed grocery shopping at the nearby open-air food market (stands! Something you don't see very often anymore) and soon we made friends with all the dealers there.
This apartment is not centrally located, which is a plus given the hectic traffic of Bologna. The center, however, is easily reachable by #13 bus which offers service 24 hours a day with frequent rides (every 3-4 minutes). There is also one of the best ice cream parlors I have ever seen in my life right there, and a swimming pool about 3 minutes walk. A great pizzeria is in the immediate vicinities.
We finally rented this place after comparing its rpices against others in the same range - absolutely no comparison, it was great value for our money.
We highly recommend this place to all. Best regards rom Belgium!" ("Papageno", Belgium)
"We totally recommend this place. We stayed for two weeks in September 2010 - it was clean, cosy, roomy, safe for the kids and everything was provided. One room is a den with a steep stairway, but it is safe and very comfortable, cool in the Summer. Very nice owners, good communications from the very beginning too. The area is genuine Italian, you stay out of the beaten track and there is everything at hand, even an open air market with stands, etc.. The price was very good for this type of accommodation. - Helmut from Hamburg." (Helmut W., Germany)
"It was a great location, store and bus convenient, very quiet and plenty of room and a nice garden to relax in. Washer and line for drying clothes was also good. It's important to know the 3rd bedroom is in the basement. We would recommend this for couples or a family. It's a wonderful city." (Sara K., USA)
"This is a great apartment for the traveler who needs a home base. Conveniently located in a lovely neighborhood, well stocked, clean and centrally located. The bus to town is right around the corner as is a market, a shop for bread and another for espresso and restaurants are within walking distance. The neighborhood is safe, Sebastiano is great with returning emails and it has a washing machine and a clothesline!! I would recommend it for the "unfussy" traveler!" (Barbara E., USA)
"My husband two children and I stayed at The Berries for a week and found it to be a very nice basic apartment in a non-touristy part of town. It is convenient to get to the dowtown area and the train station as there are bus lines close by. There is also a supermarket around the corner, and a terrific cafe just up the street. After our second visit, the owner (Marra) made us feel like family. This house is well equipped from kitchen utensils to plenty of soaps/detergents. The washing machine and clothesline are a godsend with a family. Guiseppe met us a planned and provided us with local maps, directions, etc. I would highly recommend staying." (Joyce ME., USA)
"A perfect place for families in Bologna. Comfortable with beds on the main floor for 5, and for one in the basement through a trap door best for a teenager than for a young child. An easy bus ride straight into Bologna on a bus for 10 minutes makes this good value, and the communal garden area perfect for children." (Yves A., France)
