Set in the beautiful countryside on the border of Charente and Dordogne, considered by some the most beautiful countryside in France, the house is an exquisitely-restored 18th Century Mansion. Its position at the top of the hill, with the 12th century (updated in 17th century) chateau to one side and the church to the other, gives it magnificent views over the surrounding valleys and the small town of Villebois Lavalette, with its well-known covered market place built in 1665.The house has 5 spacious bedrooms, 4 bright and airy full bathrooms plus a separate WC on the ground floor, salon, dining room, fully equipped kitchen and a loggia--ideal for watching the sun come up while drinking morning coffee or enjoying an evening liqueur looking out across the roof of the neighbouring church. The whole house was recently totally restored by local artisans and equipped with modern kitchen and bathrooms while retaining the charm of the original mansion. The gardens, amounting to almost a hectare (about 2 acres) provide lots of space to relax or walk around. the large upper garden has a 5x10 metre swimming pool, fenced in compliance with France's strict safety laws. Two unusual trees in the front garden--a Pawlonia and a Lumquat, draw interest from many passers-by. The chateau next door has been the site of fortifications since before Roman times. The whole area around the beautiful town of Villebois Lavalette is steeped in history from the well-known cave paintings at Lascaux, or the lesser known nearby ones at Villars, to the city of Perigueux, the village of Aubeterre (one of France's designated 100 most beautiful villages), Angouleme(the rampart city) and many other fascinating places to visit. Situated within an hour or so from both Bordeaux and Cognac, visits to vineyards, such as those around the village of St. Emilion, and distilleries make for interesting day trips. And just a little further away, the Atlantic Ocean beaches beckon for a day of sunbathing and swimming. Situated only 22 km south of Angouleme, Villebois is within easy access by train from Paris--about 2 hours from Montparnasse station and a little over 3 hours direct from CDG airport--or an hour by train from Bordeaux.
