Located in Castello, near San Pietro, the Arsenale and the Biennale exhibition, completely new, we'd like your stay at the confortable casa di "nonna Mira" to relax and breathe the spirit of venetian life. The house is really pretty, in a quiet and relaxing position, where usually it is difficult to see lots of tourists. In only two minutes walk, in the typical venitian Via Garibaldi, there are plenty of good restaurants, bars, and all the shops. To walk to Saint Mark's square, the centre of town, it takes 15 minutes and you will have from that walk one of the best views of Venice!!
We offer these accommodations for max six people: - two bedrooms with one double-bed and two single-beds - clean comfortable bathroom with hydro-massage shower - kitchen with oven - central heating, air conditioning - washing mashine, iron and board, kettle - lounge area with double sofa-bed and television.
The house is provided of four "deck-chairs" to sit outside, in the campiello, and enjoy the view of San Pietro church on the other side of the canal. Just in front of the church there is a nice garden where you can also seat on benches under the shade of the trees.
From the beginning of july 2009 there is a Wi-fi service in the hole street of Via Garibaldi available from the Council: see http://www.veniceconnected.com/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------
VENICE HISTORY Venice sprung from a myriad of isles lying in the center of the Venetian Lagoon. It was an inhospitable environment made up of low seabeds, land just above the surface and narrow sandy islands buffering the laggon from the Adriatic sea. From the very start, Venetians have had to cope with a series of problems inextricably linked to Venice's particular environmental situation: namely, the scarcity of fresh water, the absence arable land and the difficulty of obtaining raw materials. Surrounded by water and with the neraby mainland often under the control of powers that were hostile, Venetians were compelled to exploit to the utmost their one and only resource: the sea. Initially, sustenance came from fishing and salt pits but after a short time, Venetian power grew as a result of maritime trade. Enterprising Venetian merchants traded raw materials and finish products throughout the Mediterranean, at first bartering them for gold and spices from the Byzantine Empire and, later, the Arab world. Eventually, the Venetians succeeded in establishing a broad and intricate trading network. All of Venice's productive and political structure was built around trade and, consequently, the city became the Mediterranean,'s main centre of trade. From the Middle Ages to the Renaissance it was one of the world's biggest cities as it numbered well over 150,000 inhabitants.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
La casa di "nonna Mira" was built in the 1820s in old venetian architecture. The house was meant to be a house for venetian sailors. The location was perfect for them to reach the ships and travel away from the family for months, and when back, to go out in the lagoon to fish. The women and the elders lived quietly in this area, outside their own houses, sitted on chairs, mending nets and creating nice necklesses with the glass pearls coming from Murano. The children were all together playing out in the "campos", with very few and poor toys. This was the real heart of Venice, in contrast with the last reach show of power of the Serenissima.
If tou need a relaxful and unusual holiday in Venice you couldn't miss a stay here!!

Some mornings, it was difficult to leave. The location was perfect - a quick walk along the Riva to Piazza San Marco, yet in a quiet neighbourhood full of locals next to one of the few playgrounds in the city- the kids were thrilled. We loved having our own nearly-private campo with a view to the old cathedral of the city for quiet moments at the end of our busy days. We are looking forward to returning for the Biennale and would greatly recommend this place to anyone!" (a nice family with two children)
