More travel info about Cuxhaven: Cuxhaven is located on the North Sea at the mouth of the Elbe River. This small city of about 50,000 residents mainly attracts travelers interest in the North Sea coast and the Frisian Islands. Cuxhaven has a long history as a seaside resort, dating from the early 1800s. Several miles off the coast of Cuxhaven lies Neuwerk Island, which at low tide can actually be reached by foot or carriage. If you are interested in taking a cruise of the North Sea, Cuxhaven is the primary starting point for the ferries and boats. Even if you are mainly in Cuxhaven to catch a boat, there are sites in the city that are worth visiting during your free time. The Wrack- and Fischereimuseum, located in the center of the city harbor in two former canneries, interprets the history of Cuxhaven's fishing industry. By extension, the city's lighthouses are interesting to visit. Lastly, the 600-year-old Schloss Ritzebuettel features lovely gardens and modern sculpture in a historic setting. Besides the North Sea cruises, with Cuxhaven as your base, you can reach Hamburg by train, which is about 130 miles away. Also, ferries can easily carry you to the Frisian Islands, where you can experience firsthand the beach and island cultures that have attracted vacationing Germans for many decades.
