Lovely mountain home is the perfect place for gathering friends and family.
Please don't confuse Bear (a large fur covered mammal found in the mountains of West Virginia) Necessities with Bare (plain, minimal, unadorned and also a catchy song from Disney's Jungle Book movie) Necessities. But hey, come to think of it, some of the sentiment works. This lovely 4-bedroom rancher provides a super space to ?forget about your worries and your strife?. The generous deck provides peace, quiet, scenery, and an outdoor hot tub. Baloo the Bear would find it the perfect spot to "just relax, cool it and fall apart in my backyard". Inside the open floor plan and well equipped kitchen make it easy to whip up "mother nature's recipes" and still be part of the conversation. Loaded with extras, Bear Necessities offers a flat screen TV in each bedroom, a wood burning fireplace, WIFI and more. So many extras at an incredibly affordable why a ?bear can rest at ease?. Winter guests must have four or all-wheel drive vehicles.

Weekend Trip w/ Friends
Peter H. from Arlington, VA recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in February, 2016 We had a lovely stay at Bear Necessities. The house is well-planned, so there was plenty of space for the 12 of us. Really, there's actually sleep space for 14 if you fill all beds to proper capacity. The one thing I would change about the house is that there is not enough comfy seating for 12 people! The living room space is plenty big for another couch at least. Would be a smart add!
A guest from Charlottesville, VA recommends this property. Stayed for 4 days in November, 2015 Great place! Great location, very comfortable. The place could use a new barbecue grill and a water boiler.
A great vacation tucked away in the hills of West Va
Debi E. from Bedford, PA recommends this property. Stayed for 9 days in September, 2015 We had a wonderful time. Bear Necessities is a beautiful home inside and out. It has a nice game room and beautiful fireplace and hardwood floors. The four bedrooms and four bathrooms gives a added feature to the beauty of the house. It even has a dog run in the back. Alittle fire ring to roast marshmallows and we also made some great mountain pies so very good. I recommend Best of Canaan to anyone they are one of the best we have ever rented off of.
A guest from Cambridge, MD does not recommend this property. Stayed for 3 days in July, 2015 Overall the place was nice and a good last minute stay. The house did smell musky and the towels and sheets smelled sour like they were left in the washer too long. The game room is more like an outside garage, but we could not use it because it smelled so strong of mold. The house also did not have any paddles for the canoes, so make sure you bring your own. Overall, the place was decently clean and had good supplies in the kitchen to use. The faucets make weird noises when you turned them on sometimes and the water wasn't hot. If you are staying as a few couples, the place has plenty of space and beds, the plus side was there was a bathroom in each room. The community is really nice and you have access to many lakes and it is also close to a lot of the parks and hiking. I would stay here again if it was upgraded and cleaned to get rid of the musky smell. The furniture is outdated and not comfortable, but the kitchen table was nice and big and seats many.
A guest from Baltimore, MD recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in July, 2015 The cabin was spacious and clean. Working fireplace was perfect for a chilly weekend. My nephews loved the game room. The area was beautiful with plenty of activities. The only tiny drawback was that there wasn't a great place for a campfire to roast marshmallows.
A guest from Rock Cave, WV recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in February, 2015 Nice quite, private place. However the game room is a joke. It's so small and all the equipment is either broken or missing. Other than that it's a nice place to get away and relax but if you like playing pool go somewhere else.
Cynthia L. from Hurricane, WV recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in November, 2014 Our family met at this cabin for thanksgiving weekend. There was an abundance of snow and everyone had a great time. We had everything we needed and the cabin was coimfortable. Definitely need AWD or 4ED if there is snow!
Tracy H. from Pataskala, Ohio does not recommend this property. Stayed for 7 days in June, 2014 We had a good stay at Bear Necessities but there were exceptions that could've made our stay better. As of right now, I would only advertise this home as 3 bedrooms. 1 bedroom had a very musky smell but it did help when a window was opened and the air was blown out with a box fan. Winter would've been unbearable. Alongside this room is a small game room(hard to make some pool shots because of room size)...again VERY musky smell. There is a dehumidifier in the gameroom but the smell is still strong. Recliner that is shown in pics in livingroom isn't there. A little more padded seating would be good. The kitchen definitely needs some things. Can't read measurements on measuring cups, measuring spoons broke, need larger skillets (3 medium sized skillets takes awhile to make sausage/pancakes for 8). Surround sound/stereo/dvd player is not working. The first night, we changed a sheet that looked like it needed to be changed-IF it was just a stain, I would've never used this sheet for guests. A couple of hooks in bathrooms would be a plus to have a place to hang your clothes. Having said all of this, there were some very good things about this house...the bathrooms were spotless, water pressure great, the large, clean hot tub was awesome, the deck was enjoyable, we used the beautiful fireplace, tons of cut wood outside, washer and dryer heavy duty and new, it was nice having tvs in all bedrooms and it was great having a long leash on a rope on the back of the house where the dog could have a little run. GREAT area for hiking, mountain biking and fishing. After coming to Canaan Valley for several years, for the first time we tried the Sawmill restaurant in Davis. It is SPOTLESS and delicious! Best of Canaan Realty is always on top of things. When we got to the house, we called and told them there were no useable pool sticks or darts. The next day, we had them.
A guest from Silver Spring, MD recommends this property. Stayed for 4 days in March, 2014 Bear Necessities is a delightful home in the woods which provided solitude as well as all the necessities to have family fun!
Russ H. from Arlington, VA recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in January, 2014 Bear Necessities is the perfect getaway for dog lovers who don't need a lot of fancy extras on a ski trip with friends. We had 7 people in our group and there was more than enough room to spread out. The house was extremely clean and very well furnished and stocked with ample firewood. The game room has seen better days, but we weren't there to play foosball or shoot pool. Upon arrival, the wonderful folks at Best of Canaan very apologetically told us that the hot tub was on the fritz. It wasn't a huge deal, and they cut me a refund check the day we checked out since it couldn't be repaired during our stay; such a courteous and helpful staff at the office, by the way! I look forward to staying here again next year, and highly recommend Best of Canaan for your WV ski getaway plans.
A guest from Laurel, MD recommends this property. Stayed for 4 days in January, 2014 Overal we had a great time, the location of the cabin is great,in one of the bedrooms that got only one bed the sheets were dirty, used, game room needs some attention ,other than that its a great litle cabin !!!
A guest from Fairmont, WV recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in January, 2014 This cabin is a perfect get away for a large group of people. The price is great for what you get. Four bedrooms with enough beds for twelve people to sleep comfortably. It also has four bathrooms which makes it nice when everyone is trying to get ready at the same time. The open living room/dinning room and kitchen make it nice for everyone to lounge around and socialize. Overall this cabin is perfect for a large group of people on a budget. It has everything you want for a perfect getaway!!
A guest from Beckley, WV recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in December, 2013 Had a great time at Bear Necessities. It was cozy and comfortable. The hot tub was low on water when we arrived although it was so cold during our stay we didn't miss it and built a nice fire in the fireplace instead.
Arpana M. from Bethlehem, PA recommends this property. Stayed for 4 days in November, 2013 I was here for Thanksgiving weekend with my siblings and cousins, along with 3 doggies. It was perfect. It's secluded and quiet. We loved walking down the hollow at night and admiring the stars (we all live in cities). We also went hiking to Blackwater falls and Canaan valley wildlife refuge. You definitely need AWD when it snows for the drive way. We loved the fireplace- had it going 3 straight days. The whole house was very comfy and welcoming. We didn't have any issues.
Debbie F. from Virginia Beach, VA recommends this property. Stayed for 4 days in November, 2013 This rental would be a great place for a family if the game room was functional. Bedrooms provide adequate beds for a large family.
Dave B. from Coumbus, OH recommends this property. Stayed for 5 days in August, 2013 We really enjoyed our stay at Bear Necessities in early August, 2013. The rental was easy to find online and the Best of Canaan management staff was friendly and helpful. The house is arranged conveniently with room for all of us to sleep (11) and it was nice being all together in the main room. The deck and the hot tub were enjoyable too. There is a lot to do in the surrounding area, with many nearby parks and sufficient grocery stores and restaurants. We though we would need A/C for August temperatures and was disappointed that it was not provided on the property, yet we found that the weather in this area was not too hot after all.
