The initial design concept of this residence was to provide a vibrant entry and open living space in the heart of a minimal arrangement of supporting spaces / forms rooted in the earth. The implied butterfly roof is the intersection of these spaced creating a spirited appearance from a distance and up close. The house was designed as an environment of health and repose within the surrounding high desert of north Santa Fe.Buckskin colored stucco blends into the surrounding earthen saddle / ridge, while utilizing accents of ?harbor blue? metal corrugated panels around the entry element and at the garage set-back, and natural black and gray steel tones.The living space, its connected patio, and entry were oriented to view directly to the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, while the kitchen space looks out to Sun and Moon mountains. The bedrooms receive views of the same, plus the expanse of the Espanola valley. The area of the house is a well-organized 2,100 square feet, including two full bedrooms, walk-in master closet, a study space, laundry room, and garage and work area. The nearly 500 square feet of combined patio and entry court have adobe-colored concrete block walls and pavers, accented by miscanthus grasses, Russian sage, aspens, and Santa Fe brown crusher fines.Water and energy conservation, careful solar orientation, controlled natural light, and efficient and creative use of conventional materials were important throughout the entire process of design to construction.Interior finishes include the use of Baltic birch plywood for all of the cabinetry, German honed limestone tops in the bathrooms, polished black granite tops in the kitchen, painted blackboard in the dining/kitchen, clear-sealed flush birch pocket doors, a large cumary wood plank master shower, and exposed cocoa-colored burnished concrete floors.Spears Architects (house was designed by award winning architect) December 2011 was awarded the American Institute of Architects New Mexico 2011 Firm of the Year award.This home may have a minimum night stay based on seasonality and availability, and traditionally has a four (4) night requirement.
