The town is only a short distance from the Eifel National Park, which offers opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. One must-see site in Hellenthal is the ruins of the Reifferscheid Fortress, which seems to date back to the 1st century AD. The town is also home to another fortress, Fortress Wildenburg, which started life as an abbey and was converted to a fort in 1800. From here, you can see a wonderful view of the valley. If you are interested in the mining history of this region, take the time to tour the Rescheid mining museum and site. Besides tours, the site has exhibits interpreting the region's mining industry. Children are sure to enjoy the Greifvogelstation and Wildfeigehege Hellenthal, a 65-hectare nature park that is home to numerous deer, raptors, and other animals native to the region. The site also features a small forestry museum and a children's play area. Between April 16 and October 12, 2014, the neighboring town of Zuelpich is host to the North Rhine-Westfalia State Garden Show, which is definitely worth a visit if you have the time.
