More travel info about Wernigerode: Situated on the scenic German Timber Frame Road in Saxony Anhalt, Wernigerode commands a lovely spot on the Holtemme River on the northern edge of the Harz Mountains. The city is known throughout the region for its brandy, lager, cigars, and dyes. Wernigerode dates from the early Middle Ages, and you can see several interesting Gothic buildings in the city, including the unusual city hall. Thankfully the town was not damaged much during World War II, so most of the historic buildings you can see here are authentic. While in Wernigerode, make sure to visit the castle. It dates from the 12th century, but the current structure was built in the late 1800s. Take the time to view the terraced gardens and landscape park that surround the castle. Other sites to see include the Museum of Aeronautics (50 plane and helicopters are on display here) and the Armeleuteberg which is home to the Kaiserturm observation tower and a charming forest restaurant. Also, if you want to explore the Harz Mountains, take the Harzer Schmalspurbahn, a narrow gauge railway that connects Wernigerode to the Brocken, the highest peak in the range. You can also take a bus from Wernigerode to access a cable car that goes up the Wurmberg, the area's second tallest peak. From Wernigerode, two easy day trips are to Halberstadt (15 miles) and Goslar with its World Heritage Site-listed Old City (22 miles).
