More travel info about Goerlitz: Goerlitz is notable as the easternmost city in Germany, located in Saxony on the Neisse River. The city and its Polish partner city across the river were both once a single German city, which belonged to the state of Silesia. In 1945, the Allied Powers forever changed this city by running the new border between Germany and Poland down the Neisse, which flowed through the center of the city. Despite this division, the city has fared well in recent years, and it was even named a 2006 City of Culture by the European Union. Goerlitz was not significantly destroyed in World War II, and today the city is becoming renowned for its rich architectural heritage. The city scape is a lovely, authentic blend of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Art Nouveau styles. One of the city's buildings, Schoenhof, is one of the oldest civic Renaissance buildings in all of Germany, dating from 1526. Another structure worth viewing is the so-called Biblical House on Neisse Street, the facade of which is decorated with various scenes from the Old and New testaments. Filmmakers have begun flocking to Goerlitz to shoot their movies against the city's streets; scenes in Inglorious Bastards, The Reader, and The Grand Budapest Hotel were all shot here. For those interested in the now vanished Silesian culture, the Silesian Museum and the Silesian Music Festival are worth mentioning. One does not need to travel far from Goerlitz to find other places to visit. Bautzen, the cultural capital city of the Sorbian ethnic minority, is only about 30 miles to the West. And Bad Muskau, home to the Prince Pueckler Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), is also only 30 miles north.
