Neckar Valley and Odenwald Forest… Landscapes of Beauty…
The beautiful Odenwald and the Neckar valley offer pure relaxation. Charming cities and villages in almost primeval landscape of dense forests, with romantic river valleys, wait for you to explore. You can go for extended walks on the numerous bike and hiking trails leading past castles, forests, valleys, rivers and meadows. A diverse offer of activities and a packed calendar of events will turn your vacation into an unforgettable experience.
The Neckar valley is a particularly romantic area in the Odenwald, still characterized by beautiful hills growing wine, with charming cities, castles and ruins. The Neckar river flows through the valley, not just meandering past the hills, but also alongside the cities with their many framework houses and magnificent sandstone buildings. Besides the Neckar runs a 59 km long hiking and bike path starting in Heidelberg, going past Neckargemünd, Neckarsteinach, Hirschhorn, Eberbach, Neckar-gerach, and Neckarzimmern to Bad Wimpfen. Dilsberg is located on a mountain top in the middle of the romantic Neckar valley, with the river flowing on three sides of the hill, and offering a perfect starting point for exploring the Neckar valley and the Odenwald forest.
Towns and Villages in the Vicinity:
Here, a small sampling of the numerous romantic settlements close by the vacation house Veste Dilsberg.
Coming from Heidelberg along the Neckar valley, mountain fortress Dilsberg can be seen from far away. The fortress on a hilltop, surrounded on three sides by the river, used to be considered impregnable, and romantic roads, framework houses and the castle from the 13th century thus still shape the cityscape. From the castle, one has a great view into the Neckar valley and can find calm and relaxation in the beautifully located castle park. Enjoy events on the open-air stage of the castle or go for a walk on the path circling around the castle. Dilsberg also is home to numerous restaurants and cafés, both in the fortress and in the city.
The town is also known as “the beautiful neighbor of Heidelberg.” Neckargemünd is located only 10 km up the Neckar from Heidelberg, contains many historical sights such as the classicist city gate, the entrance to the walled-off old town, the numerous framework houses not only around the idyllic market square, but in all of town, as well as the beautiful old sandstone villa which used to function as town hall and its nice park, which are well-worth a visit. Neckargemünd is just 1.5 km away from vacation house Burg Dilsberg and offers many shopping opportunities, restaurants and cafés.
Right opposite the fortress Dilsberg on the foot of the mountains lies the charming city Neckarsteinach with its four castles built on the slope above the town. They are connected by the Vierburgenweg (four castle path), starting at the first castle, Schwalbennest (sparrow’s nest), going past Hinterburg and Vorderburg and ending at Mittelburg (“back castle,” “front castle,” and “middle castle,” respectively). There is also a hiking path from Schwalbennest castle through dense forests via Neckargemünd (about 1 hour) to Heidelberg (some 5 hours). Neckarsteinach is particularly well-known for its beer gardens and the many framework houses. Annually, there is also a castle illumination when the castles are not only illuminated into the night, but there’s also a grand fireworks at midnight. Dilsberg is a great vantage point from which to observe those.
”The pearl of the Neckar” extends as a longish, very well preserved town of framework houses with steep steps, flower-adorned houses and cobblestone streets, surrounded by city walls. A castle complex stands above the town, built around 1250 and extended 1583. The castle offers a wonderful view of Hirschhorn from its panorama terrace. Between town and castle lies the former Carmelite monastery established 1406. Worth seeing is also the Ersheim Chapel of 773, the oldest church in the entire Neckar valley. Hirschhorn lies 8.5 km from Dilsberg and is well-worth a visit.
Eberbach is a beautiful town with a magnificent old city of framework houses, surrounded by the remains of the city wall and its four towers Blauer Hut (blue hat), Pulver-, Rosen- and Haspelturm (13.-14. century). A nice river promenade extends along the Neckar, all the length of the city itself. The oldest building in town is the Thalheimsches Haus of 1401 with a quiet courtyard. In the well-maintained core of the city, the old market contains the former town hall built in “Weinbrenner” style (1824). The “Altes Badhaus” (old bath house) was built in 1340; it is now a restaurant. The ruins of the Eberburg castle above the town can be visited on nice walks. Eberbach (15 km from Dilsberg) offers many traditional restaurants, cafés, cozy wine bars and gourmet restaurants, as well as shopping opportunities.
Heidelberg is a paragon of German romanticism and one of the most beautiful cities of Germany. The completely preserved old town with castle ruins and the wonderful Old Bridge is well-known all over the world. Beautiful Renaissance buildings follow one after another, and there are many more sights, e.g. the old university with its ceremonial hall and library, the baroque palace, the scenic old town with its many student bars and other restaurants, cafés and wine bars, the Old Bridge and, of course, the castle and its beautiful park. The other side of the river, connected via the Old Bridge, is home to many large and beautiful villas. It also holds the Philosophenweg (philosopher’s path), which Goethe himself used to hold dear, up on the mountain. Walking on this path, the entire historic panorama of Heidelberg (9 km distant from Dilsberg) presents itself.
Free Time Activities:
The Odenwald and the Neckartal not only offer scenic cities and a large number of events, but also many opportunities for doing sports, charming walking paths and bike paths.
In Neckargemünd, 1.5 km from Dilsberg, one finds the terrace swimming pool right at the Neckar’s bank, containing an Olympic pool, a non-swimmer’s pool, a baby pool, a large lawn with many trees and the Pit-Pat. Right besides it are tennis courts (rental equipment also offered). A rope park, which is worth a daytrip, is located just 200 m from the pools. One can also rent a fishing rod and go fishing in the Neckar. Heidelberg’s boat rental offers sailing as well as pedaling boats; the city also contains various wellness and fitness centers to do or get done what’s good for one’s health. In Neckargemünd, there are also two places with two bowling tracks each. Additionally, there is the host of hike and bike trails described in the numerous guidebooks. Golf courses can be found in Lobenfeld (4 km from Dilsberg), Schatthausen (8km), St.Leon-Rot (~15 km).
The Neckar valley and Odenwald offer a whole host of events: beer and “Moscht” festivals, local festivals, knight’s games on the many castles, theater at the Heidelberg Castle and others, castle illuminations with fireworks, readings, flea markets, wine and castle festivals, and many more…
New Year’s on Dilsberg fortress is an extraordinary experience. Right at midnight, the the Dilsberg night watchmen with their long black robes arrive at the fortress with their torches and bells and run through it, while the many fireworks illuminate the sky above. Another great event is the Four Castle’s Illumination (Vierburgenbeleuchtung) of Neckarsteinach, which one can observe very nicely from fortress Dilsberg. The beautiful fireworks start at 11 p.m., three times a year. Also in the fortress, in the commander’s house, the chamber music days, four days of classical music, get started. Each weekend, there are guided tours of the castle, sometimes also during the night, led by the watchmen.
Upon your arrival at the historical vacation house Burg Dilsberg, the brochure about the Odenwald including all details about the many events will already await you.
