Legend of the name of the apartment
The castle is first documented by the Electorate of Cologne in 1135 as a fief. 1142, Hermann of Stahleck became Count Palatine of the Rhine and Elector. 1214 Stahleck falls through to the Wittelsbach family, where it remains until 1802. In the Thirty Years' War the castle was conquered and devastated several times. The castle was finally repaired in the Palatinate War of Succession in 1689 to the ruins, like most castles in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley.

In the 19th century, the castle belonged to the personal property of the Prussian Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm, who gave it to his wife in 1829. Before his visit, zealous subjects had leveled the "medieval rubbish", so that one was under reconstruction. It was not until 1909, when the castle became the property of the Rhenish Society for Conservation and Landscape Protection Association, Cologne, securing work began to the ring and shield wall. From 1925 the castle was rebuilt on the foundations of the palace as a hostel. In the Third Reich on Stahleck a youth re-education camp was set up. Since the war, the castle is again a hostel. It has since been leased by the Rhenish society to the Youth Hostel Association of Rhineland-Palatinate.

The newly constructed buildings are - as hostel - not to visit. The farm is accessible and because it is closed to the Rhine side only by a low parapet gives a fine view over the Rhine Valley. Is on medieval remains (the only castle in the region with a moat), and the shield wall to the mountain side is worth seeing. A particularly impressive castle overlooking the Rhine valley and you have after a short climb to a platform located above the castle.

The Middle Rhine region and the Middle Rhine Valley are World Heritage sites since June 2002. And not in vain because of this narrow, indented by numerous steep rocky ridge Rhine forms the scenic backdrop for a memorable vacation. Here is the Loreley's home, and one fortress or castle ruin follows the other. Their names - Stahleck Schönburg, Mark Burg, Sooneck, Reichenstein, Rheinstein, Ebernburg the middle of the Rhine are situated Pfalzgrafenstein and many other world famous castles. For active holiday there are many paths through the region. The woods and adjacent vineyards offer a variety of marked hiking trails.

Those who are not (longer) so athletic, can learn to relax on the terrace and enjoy the beautiful view through the Rhine Valley or wander through the valley with your own car and know the many attractions. Even the restaurants and wine taverns of wineries invite you to stay and offer a taste of the local specialties from the wine cellars.

Get to know the wine-producing towns, with their sometimes still existing medieval fortifications and their often well-preserved town centers. You will enjoy the beauty of the half-timbered houses that are built on the Rhine running parallel to the main roads and small streets branching off. In Bacharach is the tourist information office Rhine-Nahe. The medieval town with its ancient city walls, castle Stahleck, Gothic Werner Chapel, and the ruin of Stahlberg in the village of Steeg are a strong attraction for travelers. Other attractions in Bacharach: Old House, Market Square; old Posthof, Ev. Church of St. Peter; yard with Cath. Church of St. Nicholas; Kurpfälzische mint (former mint); Kurpfälzer Amtskeller (now Town Hall), the largely preserved town wall (curtain wall and towers), and the lovely half-timbered houses in Bacharach and the city's earlier village quarters Steeg, Neurath, and Henschhausen.

Romantic is of course a ride on the ship. The tour offered by the shipping companies is versatile and a ride aboard the white Rhine Fleet is an experience for every visitor. Even at night you can take a Rhine cruise. The ships are illuminated and are on board is abundant [= destination: eat: eating:] and drink with music and dance. Shorter is a ride on one of the numerous car ferries that take passengers every 20 minutes from one to the other side of the river.
