Lynn L. from Alexandria, VA does not recommend this property. Stayed for 3 days in October, 2016 While the location was great, the accommodation was a little disappointing. The house really needed some maintenance, walls were dirty, way too many spider webs in windows, skylights, and there was black mold in both showers, and there was water marks on many of the walls. The hot tub stairs were totally dangerous! The couch and love seat in living room were very uncomfortable and need to be replaced.
A guest from Jefferson Hills, PA recommends this property. Stayed for 5 days in October, 2016 Stayed here for 5 days no real issues at all very nice Only thing would be that it needs some TLC it looks like it's been not painted in years but if you overlook that everything else is quite nice the hot tub could also receive some tlc
Fred K. from Charleston, West Virginia does not recommend this property. Stayed for 3 days in September, 2016 average. great location. otherwise: ancient silverware, pots, glasses, plates; sleeps 6 but for a 3 day rental 1 paper towels, 2 dishwasher tablets, 2 trash bags, 1 key, towels worn from 20 years of usage. For the price would have thought a little better provisions.
Daniel W. from Princeton Junction, NJ recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in August, 2016 We are a family of 4, and spent a week here in August 2016. The house is a bit worn, but no worse for the wear. It is nestled in the woods at the north end of the Timberline Resort community. It borders the National Wildlife Refuge, and there is a trail hear nearby that takes you into the Refuge. The house is also close to Sand Lake, and there's a nice trail that goes around the lake. Horse stables are off the main road and offer trail rides up into the Dolly Sods wilderness area. It is a magnificent summertime setting. The house is clearly a year-round rental, as the kitchen supplies were very limited, as well as a odd mix of plastic and ceramic dishes. i.e., no foil or wrap, no sponges, and a short supply of dishwasher soap and trash bags. The best part of the house was the hot tub on the back deck!
Nancy W. from Dunbar, WV does not recommend this property. Stayed for 4 days in August, 2016 The house has a good layout but it is in need of SERIOUS repair. Wall need paint, mold in bathroom shower, décor was wore out and dated.Neighbors sawing and hammering at 8 am.Also, the house does not have air condition. Very humid, luckily it was not too hot out.Could not wait to return home . . . :O(
James H. from New Martinsville, WV recommends this property. Stayed for 4 days in August, 2016 Perfect. Absolutely wonderful family vacation. The staff was very helpful, giving ideas on places to go, as well as directions/maps. The property was amazing with great view, and good location for exploring the area. My family and I will be coming back for years to come.
Dana H. from Baltimore, MD recommends this property. Stayed for 4 days in November, 2015 The pictures do not do it justice. When we arrived, the house seemed small, but it was late at night, but we were happy to be there. We walked in and the floor plan is open and inviting. The décor is comfy and homey, but not in a commercial way. The kitchen was well stocked with utensil, dishes and cookware. The peace and quiet is unlike anything you get in the city. It is truly a great getaway from the hustle and bustle of life. The kids had a great time seeing the wildlife and a clear view of the stars. The entire time from reserving to handing in the keys was painless and done with a smile. We will be coming back.
A guest from Mifflinburg, PA does not recommend this property. Stayed for 4 days in October, 2015 The property is in need of some updates...kitchen is lacking. we could not find a slow cooker. Cookie sheets, frying pans in very poor condition. we actually went to store to buy foil pans to do some of our cooking. No blind in one bathroom window. Toilets did not flush well. Also, there really is not adequate seating in living room. we had 6 adults. there is a couch and chair. otherwise, it's hard wooden seats. for the same price, I am sure we could find a more cared for rental.
Sally S. from Fleetwood, PA recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in September, 2015 What a beautiful area, loved the location. The house has great bones but needs some general maintenance. Painting, a few new throw rugs but other wise was clean and comfortable.
Jeffrey M. from Martinsburg, WV recommends this property. Stayed for 4 days in May, 2015 Staying in Canaan Valley on Memrial Day Weekend means ArtSpring--an exhibition of local art in many locations in the Valley, Davis, Thomas & Parsons, with the opportunity to look, and to buy! It is a great weekend, which we will do again.
A guest from Etters, Pennsylvania recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in April, 2015 We loved the cabin! It has everything you need and the hot tub was a huge plus! I would definitely recommend it!
A guest from Severna Park, MD does not recommend this property. Stayed for 3 days in January, 2015 While I wish I could recommend this company and this cabin, unfortunately I can't. My entire family ended up with skin infections that resulted from using the insufficiently cleaned/chlorinated hot tub at the Lazy S. The staff at Best of Canaan has not been helpful in resolving this situation to my satisfaction. I would avoid using this cabin and this rental company if you don't want the hassle of dealing with doctor visits and antibiotics for weeks after your visit.
Lori O. from Howell, Michigan recommends this property. Stayed for 4 days in January, 2015 We had a marvelous time- All of my sons currently live in Charlotte, NC and we live in Michigan- Every year i pic an unknown spot for us all to meet in January. we celebrate the holidays we missed together and winter birthdays. The house was perfect- we enjoyed the hot tub and the fireplace too! Weather was cold and snowy!! :)Some of the previous reviews were negative in regards to the house needing painting- etc. Well, when people come stay at your place and do not respect the property- you will have that- We loved the space, decor and items provided. Thanks for everything!
A guest from Maidens, Virginia recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in December, 2014 We were amazed at the wonders of winter during our stay. We watched the clouds dump snow and crystals on the tops of the mountains while the rest of the fields and everything stayed dry. What a spectacular view. The house was a great place to land after a busy day.
Christine M. from Mineral, VA does not recommend this property. Stayed for 5 days in November, 2014 Thanksgiving 2014 was our second stay at Lazy S - our first was back in the summer of 2006. The location, backing up to the refuge and on the valley floor, was perfect for hunting woodcock and given the vast amount of snow we were happy to not drive up to a house on the mountain. Lazy S is cozy and perfect for our family of four but is in need of some TLC. The walls are in dire need of painting, the pans need replacing and some kitchen basics such as a working can opener were not available. One of the reasons we chose Lazy S was because it was pet friendly as we brought our very well trained female Brittany Spaniel. The beautiful rug in the master bedroom shows multiple urine stains - especially around the bed posts where male dogs have "marked". Hopefully the owners will put some effort back into this beautiful home to bring it up to par. If they do we will most definitely be back! I must mention that the staff at Best of Canaan is, hands down, the most friendly and helpful in the valley. This is our second time in 2014 renting a house through them and we will most definitely always choose our Old Timberline rental home from their selection. We have been coming to Canaan for 12 years now, often 3-4x/year and know we will be taken care of with Best of Canaan.
John G. from Elizabeth Town, PA recommends this property. Stayed for 9 days in November, 2014 the water was cloudy for a couple of days but it cleared up and was fine after we used it. every thing else was very good thank you for the vacation.
A guest from North Wales, Pennsylvania recommends this property. Stayed for 5 days in October, 2014 We had a wonderful stay at Lazy S October 2014. Close to all Canaan Valley attractions. Fireplace and hot tub were great. We were so happy to be able to bring our little yorkie with us so he could hike all the trails.
Craig S. from Columbia, MD recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in August, 2014 We had a great experience and really enjoyed or stay. Great location, plenty of privacy. Loved barbecuing on the deck and using the hot tub. The house has lots of space and a well-stocked kitchen. Like other reviews, there are a few things that need to be done with little things like Paint and some small repairs, but these did not affect our stay. We will be back!
A guest from Morgantown, WV recommends this property. Stayed for 4 days in August, 2014 The cabin itself is very nice and in a great location. The house could use a fresh coat of paint and and good cleaning.
Lynn C. from Benfleet, Essex recommends this property. Stayed for 8 days in July, 2014 We had a fantastic time. The accommodation was comfortable and exactly as described. We enjoyed the hot tub and could not have asked for a more relaxing holiday
Mike B. from Pittsburgh, PA recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in July, 2014 House was very nice with the exception of a few issues: Could definitely use a coat of paint, and rugs replaced. Furniture in the livingroom could use cleaning. Television in the livingroom has an annoyoing vertical line on the picture.Shower heads could be replaced. Layout of house was very nice and location was ideal.
A guest from Silver Spring, MD recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in February, 2014 The house was exactly as described. Adorable and cozy cabin. It was dog friendly so while spotlessly clean, it was a bit worn in some areas. The location was awesome. The kitchen was very well appointed. I brought a bunch of my own tools but didn't need to. The rental company was except5ional-super responsive and helpful. Would recommend to a friend.
A guest from Pittsburgh, PA recommends this property. Stayed for 2 days in December, 2013 We wanted a quick girls weekend to unwind from the Christmas rush! This property fit perfectly! It was in a wonderful private location with hiking right outside our door. The property was spotless and ready when we arrived prior to check-in. The house did have a humorous shortage of light bulbs and batteries for the remote controls (which also were held together with tape!) but it didn't really make a difference to us. The fireplace was gorgeous and there was ample wood provided. We are already planning next years getaway, and are planning to stay an extra night!
A guest from Elizabeth Town, PA recommends this property. Stayed for 9 days in November, 2013 the rental was fine we enjoyed it but where are the deer we saw 5 deer the first day most years we see 50 we heard very few shots the first day almost 25 compaired to 200 most years
A guest from Sherrard, IL does not recommend this property. Stayed for 4 days in September, 2013 We loved getting together with our daughter and son in law, but the house was disappointing. The layout and space is good and with some paint, cleanup and furniture it would be a lovely retreat. The living room furniture is worn out and not comfortable. The twin bed mattresses and box springs made so much noise when I sat down on them or rolled over that it could be heard through the wall in the other bedroom. I ended up putting a mattress on the floor and that put an end to the noise. Dishes and cookware were adequate. We didn't try the cable tv until the 2nd day only to find out that it was not working. The cable had been damaged when the road was graded so with no one staying there is it wasn't detected. It did get fixed fairly late in the evening that we reported it. It is a quiet and peaceful place.
Richard H. from Noblesville, IN recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in August, 2013 Excellent location: Very secluded. Very quiet. Walk from your front door to the 500th Wildlife Refuge trails. Access the Dolly Sods without leaving the gated community! Super close to ski areas and state parks. Short drives to awesome national forests & wilderness. Wildlife all over the place.House: Great bones. Once a really nice, custom home. Very clean - including the hot tub. Great fireplace (nice firewood.) Nice screened in back porch. Unfortunately: Kind of beat-up on the inside. Could us a lot of TLC. Mildew and musty closets. My wife couldn't be in the Master BR due to the musty smell. 2dn shower has an annoying high-pitched whine.House Furnishings: Just sad. Worn out towels, linens, couch / chair, cookware (and not great cookware at that - some of it busted.) Minimal supplies (no dish cloths or green pads, you get to run the dishwasher 4x/wk with what is supplied, bring your own laundry stuff. Firm, comfortable mattresses.Marginal cell reception and very slow internet service. True cable TV (not satellite) no DVR. A single old wired house phone.Exterminator came to spray during our stay (including front porch - rocking chairs, and back deck - hot tub. No notice, just started walking around the house spraying. Definitely not cool.Like I said, the location makes the place and in spite of all the rest, we loved it.
Dianna K. from Kerens, WV recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in July, 2013 Everything we could have hoped for. Perfect private location, ideal home for our family of four. We hope to make the Lazy S our annual getaway!
Rev. Susan W. from Columbus, OH recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in July, 2013 Overall the house worked out well for my family. The queen beds were very hard, and it would be nice to have one extra comfortable chair in the living room. There are a few small maintenance issues, but the house was clean, and it was a great place for us.
Randy E. from VALENCIA, Pennsylvania recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in June, 2013 Overall I was pleased with the property. The property was in a private location and was very quiet. Some items that need addressed in the future include: the hot tub needs fixed (a jet was loose and never worked and the water level was to low at first), the rear gutter was broken at the hot tub so the rain we did have splashed down on the deck, the DVD player had no remote and the TV remote had no batteries. However, when we mentioned the chemical level in the hot tub and a broken toilet handle the rental staff worked to resolve these issues. We will return in the future.
Teresa S. from Lebanon, Ohio recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in October, 2012 Very comfortable home with nice furnishings and has everything you could need. We really enjoyed our stay. Thanks to the home owner for sharing their home with us. The rental company is great to work with.
Holly H. from Charleston, WV recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in October, 2012 We really liked the house, but the walls could use a coat of paint and they have a mouse problem. We heard mice in our wall all night long. Its a house in the woods so we understand, but it should probably be taken care of. Came with plenty of towels, nice location, and clean.
Jessica P. from Jeannette, PA recommends this property. Stayed for 4 days in September, 2012 This is one of THE BEST get-a-ways my family an I have ever went on. This mountain region itself is absolutely beautiful. The Lazy S is PERFECT. The cabin is so clean, peaceful, cozy, and has the perfect layout. When you step out onto the deck all you hear are the sounds of nature. Donna was wonderful. She answered every question i had prior to our visit, and also while on our visit. The staff was so friendly and on the ball which made our visit that much better. We can't wait to go back. I will not be searching for a different location to stay because the Lazy S is just perfect. We LOVE it. I actually shed a tear when it was time to leave... Thank you for the first of many many visits to come :) Jessica and family
Michael W. from Moundsville, WV does not recommend this property. Stayed for 4 days in August, 2012 Our stay was one of many in Canaan. Our 2nd in Old Timberline, our first with The Best Of Canaan. I have to say we were all disappointed because the hot tub didn't work; the toilet in the master bedroom was broken; the garbage from previous renters was still there; the lack of paper products and trash bags; the kitchen sink leaked; the water pressure was horrible. The area was wonderful and the house was big enough to fit all of us. Overall the stay was not as enjoyable as others, and the property management gave us a hard time when we asked for paper towels, garbage bags, and toilet paper since only a half roll of paper products was there, and one garbage bag. They did refund us for not using the hot tub. We will probably not be staying here again; although we will stay with Old Timberline.
Karen G. from Dayton, MD recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in July, 2012 The Lazy S is a beautiful home in Old Timberline. The setting is very peaceful and has a great get-away-from-it-all feel. It also backs up to the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge so there are walking/biking trails just a stone's throw away. The furniture in the house is comfortable and clean. Nice decor. The kitchen is well equipped. The hot tub worked well and we used it once. TV worked fine and had a good picture. There were a few mice - not a surprise in this setting. We trapped them easily. There was a problem with the water during our stay: several times the water just stopped. In all cases, it always came back anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours later but it was hard to predict when it would happen. We would definitely stay there again, assuming the water issue is fixed.
We had a very good time with this rental & our vacation in Canaan
Ed W. from Medina, OH recommends this property. Stayed for 5 days in July, 2012 Best of Canaan experience was very enjoyable. We had a few property issues but the service from BOC was excellent. Staff was very friendly, efficient and on top of everything(even after hours). If the issues like the front door sticking badly, the refrigerator going out, the water softener recycling during dinner time & showers it would have been a perfect stay. The owner should also put a fresh coat of paint on all walls. Although the place was clean it did not feel clean due to the dirty walls.
Tracy H. from Pataskala, Ohio recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in July, 2012 We found many pluses by staying at the Lazy S. The house was clean and in good shape. It might sound silly but there's not tons of knick-knacks to move to make room for our things. The decor is just right. The hot tub was clean and whether it was or it wasn't, our guess would be it was new. Very enjoyable after a day of mountain biking off Camp 70 Road or the trails in the wildlife refuge right beside the house. The rocking chairs on the covered front porch were great in the a.m. with a cup of coffee. Sitting very quietly on the porch, in mid-afternoon, deer came out in the front yard. We cooked dinner most nights at the house and found everything we needed although a new large skillet would be helpful. It was in pretty rough shape. The location of the house is private. People can't see you from the road or other houses. We love this gated community with walking trails and 2 big fishing lakes for our kayaks. The deer are everywhere in this community. Its beautiful and peaceful. Although, we like to try new houses every year, I would not hesitate to rent Lazy S again or deal with Best of Canaan rental company. They answer every e-mail and phone call promptly, no matter what its about. They're very eager to give you information about the area to make your stay enjoyable as ours was.
Carolyn B. from West Palm Beach, FL recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in June, 2012 Our only real problem were mice. Thank goodness we were provided with traps. This should have been handled before we arrived. We were greeted by 2 in traps!!The porches could have a good sweeping! We did appreciate the prompt attention from maintance when we called. We seemed a long way from the rest of our family, except for 1, we'll try to locate better the next time. This was our 5th time in Timberline, We love the place.
A guest from Beaverdam, VA recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in May, 2012 Exactly what we needed! The house was tucked away in the Timberline resort. Beautiful scenery on the way. Perfect relaxing house with all the amenities! The hot tub was the perfect way to relax after an active day of playing gold or canoeing down the Cheat River. The people in the area were very friendly and we hope to return soon!
Lisa G. from Satellite Beach, FL recommends this property. Stayed for 5 days in February, 2012 All the staff at Best of Canaan were very friendly and helpful. Would definitely visit the area again and stay at the Lazy S. The cabin was very private and peaceful. The only thing about the condition that I would say would be to update the cookware. Overall a very enjoyable vacation. Thank You!
Rachel M. from East Lansing, MI recommends this property. Stayed for 4 days in December, 2011 Donna from the management company was extremely helpful in booking the house and providing information. The house was in fairly good condition and we had all the necessary ammenities for a comfortable stay. My only suggestion for the future would be to leave a memo about the hot tub, stating the location of the hose to refill it as needed and what setting to leave it on when departing. (We finally found the hose in a bedroom closet which did not seem a logical place for it.) Overall a wonderful stay and we would rent through Best of Canaan again.
Diane T. from Leesburg, Virginia recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in December, 2011 My family had a fantastic time in the WV mountains albiet there was not much snow over the Christmas holiday. We did manage to "hit the slopes" twice. Did not do any hiking as the ground was too muddy. The Lazy S offered us a great hot tub to relax in and plenty of wood to keep the fireplace going throughout our vacation. The kitchen was well equiped (needs more dinner plates because we had to run the dishwasher after each meal) and there were plenty of towels for both hot tub use and showers. Loved the fact that we were in the woods. The Best of Canaan staff was great and responded to our few requests immediately.
James S. from Alexandria, VA recommends this property. Stayed for 4 days in November, 2011 This house is perfectly located a two minute walk from the Canaan Valley Refuge, with a ton of winding, gorgeous trails. A roomy, comfy house, with firewood provided!!! Best of Canaan was extremely accomodating on our check out day, as my friend was feeling very ill and the folks at the office told us to take as much time as we needed to vacate the premises. Above and beyond, thank you very much!!!
John G. from Elizabeth Town, PA recommends this property. Stayed for 9 days in November, 2011 we had a good time in a very nice property. we were deer hunting, we saw fewer deer than any time in the last six years way fewer
A guest from Fort Thomas, KY recommends this property. Stayed for 2 days in November, 2011 Loaded up grandma, grandpa and the 2 dogs to celebrate an early Thanksgiving with our daughter. Absolutely loved the Lazy S! It was clean, comfortable and nicely equipped. I made a big meal and there wasn't one thing I needed that wasn't already there. The woodburning fireplace was wonderful! The snow on the ground and dogs curled up by the fire made our stay feel like something out of a Norman Rockwell painting! Hopingto be able to return again in the next few months!
Karen S. from Columbia, MD recommends this property. Stayed for 2 days in October, 2011 Very nice home , spacious , clean and it had all we needed. Got a bit lost getting there though as it was not on our GPS. The hot tub was a pleasure and so was watching the wildlife. Lady at management company that helped us on the Sunday we departed was very friendly and helpfull. All that is really needed there are some nicer places to eat , the Ski Lodge could do with a upgraded menu.
Overall, A Great Experience!! It's a nice house, & well equiped.
Charles D. from The Villages, FL recommends this property. Stayed for 14 days in August, 2011 Make sure Best of Canaan tells you how to find the rheostats for the overhead fans, and Bring a nightlight. It gets dark!
Joyce R. from Girard, OH does not recommend this property. Stayed for 3 days in July, 2011 We loved the area as we were driving in only to find the most unwelcoming entrance to the home. The front door was in bad need of painting as was the entire house. Such a shame, the home could be very nice. While the house appeared to be clean it deffinitely needed a good "spring cleaning" scrubbing. Also, not all of the hot tub speeds were functioning. The website also stated there was a gas grille, however, only a charcoal grille was available and we had to go out and purchase charcoal. We absolutely loved the area, parks, hiking, biking but will not stay at the Lazy S again. Maybe the owners should not be so Lazy and check on there house more often. It has great potential just needs painted and a deep cleaning.
Bruce D. from Monroeville, NJ recommends this property. Stayed for 4 days in May, 2011 We loved the location, complete with lots of seclusion in the woods just a walk away from beautiful lakes, well-kept trails, and picture views. A note on the cleanliness - just found the place a bit stuffy/dusty when we first arrived. Perhaps just needed a touch up. But overall, we absolutely loved the place and hope to go back!
Darrin R. from McLean, VA recommends this property. Stayed for 5 days in May, 2011 A fantastic experience. The folks at Best of Canaan really went above and beyond to make our stay as comfortable as possible. The location and condition of the property was first rate. We will be going back before the year is up.
A guest from Silver Spring, MD recommends this property. Stayed for 2 days in April, 2011 An ideal place to get away from it all for a weekend! Secluded and quiet, but very comfortable and clean. I look forward to going back!
A guest from Langley AFB, VA recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in March, 2011 We took a big chance with the weather but it paid off. We had the best skiing on powder in years. It was great to be so close and so comfortable in the Lazy S. The cabin was so well equiped we didn't miss a thing. While we didn't have young children, it even had equipment for them. We were a little short on comfy living room furniture since our party had several adults. The hot tub was great after a long day, it just needed a filter or water change. Other than that, things were close to perfect.
A guest from Washington, DC recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in February, 2011 While overall the house was lovely and we greatly enjoyed our stay there are a few areas that could be improved quite easily. The house is in need of new towels and new pillows, as both linen items were frankly not in good or even passable condition. Many of the towels were torn, stained, and frayed. Several lightbulbs were out and in need of changing. Finally, it would be helpful to have additional toilet paper rolls, dishwasher soap, and platic bags as over the course of our stay we ran out of these items (or very low) and had to visit the rental office to restock these supplies.
