James H. from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in July, 2016 A wonderful vacation get away. The barn apartment is very charming, decorated with a "horse camp" motif. Being city dwellers who work in the mental health field, the isolation and serenity of the place were very appealing. Loved petting the horses. Our dog loved it as well.
A guest from Canal Winchester, OH recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in July, 2016 Second time being there and the updates make the place even better. My significant other and I are huge outdoors people and I love to fish. So the fully stocked pond was a major plus. Besides the occasional semi going by, you really don't hear a thing outside. Inside is very peaceful. I love the expanded second bedroom and it appears they are adding an additional walkout. Can't wait to see what else is in store for this place. Maybe even a pool for the summer season! ;-)
A guest from South Charleston, WV recommends this property. Stayed for 4 days in June, 2016 We had a wonderful stay at the horse camp. Your horses are beautiful and sweet, though one is a little over-zealous, haha. The place was clean and there was lots to do! Also thank you for the delicious eggs! My only wish is that it was closer to Davis or another town, but the drive is gorgeous!
A guest from Lawrence, KS recommends this property. Stayed for 5 days in June, 2016 This place couldn't be better. The owners seem to have anticipated every need and filled it before we arrived. All the little details were attended to -- flyswatters left on the outside table, jacuzzi filled with hot clean water, the dock lit up with strip lighting, fresh flowers and eggs left on the table -- and everything was spotlessly clean and beautifully decorated, to boot. We loved sitting on the upstairs porch drinking coffee and watching the sun rise over the green hills. The house and grounds make a perfect place to retreat from the hustle and bustle of the real world. We couldn't have enjoyed it more.
Charles E. from Charleston, WV recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in June, 2016 relaxing time in the mountains. the unit was clean and comfortable. the surrounding area is great for outdoor activity. the unit is centrally located to all outdoor activity in the area.
A guest from Bluemont, VA recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in March, 2016 We loved our weekend getaway at horse camp! It was so wonderful to be able to bring our dogs, they were outside all weekend swimming in the lake and enjoying a campfire with us. This property had more than I expected. The amenities were wonderful. They provided plenty of wood for the fire pit and a corn hole game. The kitchen was stocked more than I anticipates, We most def overpacked as they provided all the essentials. They even left a dozen farm fresh eggs for us to enjoy, and we did! the house was immaculately clean. It did not feel like most rentals, I didn't even need to use my own sheets ;) you can tell this is a loved home. We cannot wait to return for another weekend getaway.
Brian T. from Oakton, VA recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in February, 2016 This is our fourth stay and the property continues to be expanded and improved. The first floor bedroom has been enlarged and now has a private entrance, a new half bath and a full size washer and dryer have also been added . HBO, Showtime and other movie channels have been added to the Direct TV lineup. The owners continue to keep the driveway plowed when needed or called. This on top of having all the condiments and other items you forget to bring keeps us coming back. We just hope the rental rate does not expand beyond our budget!
Jennifer N. from Chesapeake, VA recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in January, 2016 This barn was awesome! The apartment they have put together in this place is really nice. It was all ready for us when we arrived. They had fresh flowers on the table, a dozen eggs from their chickens in the fridge as a complimentary gift, and firewood in the wood stove ready to go for our use. It was a very pleasant stay. As the post says, this is a good place to stay for two adults and two children, but I will say that if you have 4 adults, the bed downstairs is pretty small. I believe it's a full. My boyfriend and I struggled to comfortably fit it in. This isn't a complaint though! Just a heads up in case two couples take this trip :)Hot tub was AWESOME after a couple long days of snowboarding!
Scott K. from Butler, Pennsylvania recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in September, 2015 We had a great time at Horsecamp. It was clean, comfortable, and well stocked. The decor was very nice, it was like staying in a small museum. We enjoyed the scenery, the pond, and the horses. The hot tub was wonderful after a day of hiking in the mountains. We got to meet the owner, really nice guy, very helpful. We hope to return at some point in the near future.
A guest from Manassas, VA recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in September, 2015 Very clean - felt like I was staying at a relative's place instead of someone I didn't know. The décor and memorabilia in the house are very interesting! The description is very accurate. I loved the location, except for the occasional traffic on Rt 33. Otherwise, this place is one of the best (if not the best) vacation rentals I've ever stayed in! Highly recommended for a quiet getaway. Also, the stars at night are incredible - don't miss out on that!
Claudia W. from Chesterfield, VA recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in August, 2015 The house is so unique, well appointed, the beds wonderful and the scenery amazing. It was a relaxing, fun week. They keep making improvements to the property and each time we visit we are amazed. It is so peaceful sitting out on the deck watching the sun go down, taking walks, using the pond and paddle boat and visiting the state parks and small towns. Our dog and teenager love it too. We will be back.
Christine B. from Washington, District of Columbia recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in July, 2015 You couldn't ask for a better place to spend the weekend and relax. Everything said in all the reviews and more. Horse Camp is situated on a lovely property just outside of Harman, WVa and not too fall from Seneca Rocks. The house is beautifully decorated and full to the brim with thoughtful touches. The dogs had the time of their life here.
A guest from Beaver Falls, PA recommends this property. Stayed for 4 days in May, 2015 I've stayed at horse camp four times now, and will just keep coming back! Every time I return there is something remodeled and or renovated. This place is fantastic! And will always be fantastic. A huge amount of property with beautiful views, if your looking for mountain seclusion look no further. Every year we think about going somewhere different and always end up right back at horse camp. I would recommend this place to anyone. No matter what the season or the reason, this place is the best.
Tracy P. from Ashburn, VA recommends this property. Stayed for 2 days in February, 2015 Very cozy place with great views! A bit far from Timberline ski resort with so much snow and ice but with dry streets it would be ok.
Brian T. from Oakton, VA recommends this property. Stayed for 4 days in February, 2015 This was our third stay and it was exceptional as expected. 5" of snow, temps around zero, drifting snow and windchills in the -20 to -50 range at night. He woodstove kept he place nice and warm and the owners came and plowed after the snow stopped. We go for the snow, so we were not let down. Pall of the extras keep us coming back.
Richard O. from Rockville, VA recommends this property. Stayed for 2 days in February, 2015 We really enjoyed our stay. This is a unique property! Great views. Nice comfortable furniture. Great wood stove. Hot tub got some fun use, glad it's very close to the door so it's not a long cold run to get there. The civil war memorabilia is very interesting. The kitchen was very well stocked--that was an unexpected touch. The upper bedroom is fantastic. The downstairs bedroom is great for kids because it adjoins the barn so they can open the door and see the horses. It probably wouldn't be good for a person allergic to hay, etc due to its proximity to the barn and limited ventilation. . Even with a 4x4, the driveway is a bit hair raising when there is ice on the road. Specifically, when driving down the driveway, skidding on the ice could be very dangerous. I would ask the landowner to spread some gravel or sand over the ice when guests are expected. I think that would take care of it. Overall, it's the most enjoyable place we have stayed in five years of visiting Canaan Valley.
Reviewed by: Robert E. F. recommends this property. Stayed for 6 days in November, 2014 Horse Camp is a Very clean, Warm, inviting, romantic experience. We enjoyed the location, housing and everything about area. The owners were very friendly and made us feel at ease. The eggs provided were great. Thanks.
Melissa S. from West Hamlin, WV recommends this property. Stayed for 4 days in November, 2014 Every aspect of our experience was positive. The booking was easy and everyone was very helpful and accommodating. The day we were to arrive, it started snowing and didn't stop. The staff at Best of Canaan went above and beyond to answer phone calls throughout the day about road conditions. The owners of the property plowed the 10+ inches of snow from the drive for our arrival and had the porch light on and waiting us. We found the house to be immaculate and well stocked with firewood and kindling. The pictures don't do the property justice. It was very quiet and secluded, though we (and our dog) did enjoy visits with the horses on the property. It was one of the best experiences we've had on vacation...snow and all! It was the perfect vacationing experience and we can't wait to go back! If you get the chance to experience "Horse Camp", don't pass it up!
A guest from South Riding, VA recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in October, 2014 This property was by far the most unique place we've ever stayed. The location is fabulous, the views are superb especially in October, and the house was immaculate. The whole place is photo worthy and inviting. The living area and kitchen are all in one room which wouldn't be comfortable for more than 3 people if the weather is bad and you will be hanging around inside for several days. However there is seating in the upstairs bedroom with a deck of its own and the deck out the front door seats 6. The owner is also expanding the downstairs bedroom. There is space for campers to hook up along with a fire ring and hot tub so that a group could stay here and have a fantastic time. Close by are state parks, wildlife and wilderness areas, and public lands; many have horse trails. I highly recommend this place and really enjoyed working with Best of Canaan.
A guest from King George, VA recommends this property. Stayed for 4 days in July, 2014 I enjoyed my stay at Horse Camp so much that I was making plans to return before I left. It is secluded enough to relax away from it all, yet plenty close to several destination points (i.e. Seneca Rocks, Spruce Knob, Blackwater Falls, etc.) I only wish I'd planned more time to simply enjoy the location.
Claudia W. from Chesterfield, VA recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in June, 2014 We have been twice to Horse Camp and absolutely love everything about it. It is in such a beautiful location and convenient to so many things. While on the property you get to enjoy the scenery, the horses, read, or get in the hot tub. We love it and highly recommend it. The house is very cozy, comfortable and well appointed. Our teenage daughter and dog loves it here too, it is a great family spot.
Brian T. from Oakton, VA recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in February, 2014 This was our second long weekend at Horse Camp. We could not of ordered it any better. It snowed almost the entire time as we had hoped. Everything was a clean and kept up as it was a year ago. We were pleasantly surprised to find a large addition to the ground floor deck and a new pond with a gorgeous dock. We may have to come back in the summer to enjoy all of these new amenities!
Theresa S. from Morgantown, WV recommends this property. Stayed for 4 days in November, 2013 We had a wonderful time at Horse Camp. Our dog had an even better time, especially because it snowed. He loves running around and eating the snow. Since we don't have a fenced in yard at home this was a treat for him. The views were spectacular. The hot tub was a big plus! Location is 22 miles from Davis/Thomas area and that's the only real place to get food in the off season. Just be prepared to drive a half hour each way to get "into town" or bring your own food. Kitchen is fully equipped. More stuff than in my own kitchen! It was also a real treat to see the deer and horses up close. The bed there is amazing and has heated blankets. I got sounder sleep there than at home. The owners leave you fully stocked with items you might have forgotten which was really a big plus. I would recommend anyone looking for a "modern country living" experience stay here.
Claudia W. from Chesterfield, VA recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in August, 2013 In a word.. peaceful. If you want to go back to a time when days were longer..but more rewarding, this is the place to stay. Deer in the morning and evening, cows, horses. Great "in between" place from Davis, Elkins, Seneca caverns, Smoke Hole... good for 3 people.. we loved it. We will be back!
A guest from Cattaraugus, NY recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in July, 2013 As a honeymoon spot, Horse Camp is not necessarily for everyone -- it is a barn surrounded by pasture. If you are not a horse person, then Horse Camp will not be a happy place for you. My wife and I were looking for seclusion and a view (and a spa), and Horse Camp afforded them all. We were very pleased with the service and professionalism of Best of Canaan, and with the overall care of Horse Camp itself.
Michael K. from Guy Mills, PA recommends this property. Stayed for 6 days in May, 2013 This was where I surprised my new wife with for our honeymoon. It was beyond what I expected! The scenery was gorgeous! The cabin was placed in just the right location so that you can see for miles! Not to mention that the cabin itself had everything that we managed to forget and then some! The charm and beauty of this cabin is not able to be done justice by a simple online review. I would hands down recommend this cabin for anyone, whether it is for a weekend or an entire week!
Maria R. from Kensington, MD recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in April, 2013 Our family of 4 (two adults and two kids) and our Basset Hound had the most wonderful time. Beautiful and serene property. We look forward to returning in the fall.
Brian T. from Oakton, VA recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in February, 2013 We arrived at 11pm on a Friday night to a nice and warm apartment with the woodstove stocked with wood and ready to lite. Within 15 minutes we had a roaring fire and sat down to watch TV with Direct TV service. The internet worked flawless and had a great night?s sleep in the queen bed in the loft. The pantry had microwave popcorn; the fridge had fresh range eggs along with all the condiments you'd have at home. It snowed the entire time we stayed and the wind howled, but the woodstove kept the apartment nice and warm with lots of firewood stored inside the barn just steps away. We could have used the electric baseboard heat, but the woodstove was our preference. We enjoyed the gentle sounds of the Guinea Hens bumping around to stay warm in the barn just thru the wall and they even greeted us by peeking in the first floor windows one of the warmer mornings. The horses were fun to watch out in the pastures. While walking thru the snow in the pasture, the white one came up and was very affectionate. It was the perfect getaway for us as a couple.
Jessica G. from Lakewood, OH recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in November, 2012 The horsecamp property is amazing! We brought our dog and she was able to run around the property. Needless to say, she had an awesome time!! The property is beautiful. The apartment is perfect for a couple. There are two bedrooms so there is also room for more people if needed. It was great to use the hot tub while it was chilly out. There's a woodburner stove to keep you warm.I am able to use wifi to make cell phone calls but if not, you won't get service.Great property and highly recommended.
A guest from Pataskala, OH recommends this property. Stayed for 4 days in October, 2012 This was the coziest little farm house I have been in. The view of the mountains from the valley was spectacular, and waking up to the cows and horses around you made the morning great. We wanted a change of pace from our traditional cabins we've stayed in. I would definitely recommend this to anyone and would stay here again when the time comes to make another visit to WV.
A great home base for exploring the area's attractions
A guest from Manassas, VA recommends this property. Stayed for 8 days in June, 2012 Horse Camp was a wonderful, lovely, and peaceful place for couple's getaway. Our dog also enjoyed the big yard and made couple horse friends. We rented this house as our home base to explore local attractions, such as Seneca Rocks, Dolly Sods, Blackwater Falls, zip lining, etc. House was secluded, charming, well stocked, and cozy. Soaking in the hot tub in the foggy moutain morning was very serene. Property manager was very friendly and helpful. The owners were very responsive and also helpful. Overall, this place is great. Thanks for every thing!
A guest from Reston, VA recommends this property. Stayed for 2 days in May, 2012 Horse Camp was wonderful ... exactly what we needed, more than we expected. The pictures simply do not do it justice. It was incredibly clean, well stocked (even with food, fresh eggs from the farm, a medicine cabinet full of NEW necessities, etc.), incredibly charming and very peaceful. It was worth it for the views alone - from the sweeping fields and hills to the horses that practically come to the door ... it really was lovely. And the property management company was extremely helpful leading up to and throughout our visit, making it as effortless as possible. Oddly the worst part of our time there was also the best. My elderly dog became very sick on the second day of our stay. Both the owners and the management company went out of their way to help us find a vet to get care for my boy ASAP. For that I will be forever grateful. We hope to return to Horse Camp soon under better circumstances and to completely enjoy all that it has to offer. Suffice it to say, we recommend it without reservation. Thanks for everything!
A guest from Napa, CA recommends this property. Stayed for 2 days in March, 2012 The apartment at Horse Camp was even nicer than we were expecting from the pictures. The peace and nature were a much needed respite from city life. We enjoyed the hot tub and watching the horses from the porch while eating breakfast. Just an FYI, there are indeed 2 separate bedrooms. The one shown in the pictures that is upstairs and one that is off of the downstairs living room & pantry. This second bedroom has a bed big enough for 2 and doesn't have any windows.Highly recommended!
Susan M. from Clendenin, WV recommends this property. Stayed for 4 days in February, 2012 My husband and I went for our anniversary and they were so helpful!!! I had mailed up pictures of our wedding, a cake and chocolate covered strawberries. They had arrange everything so Beautiful and left us a card and a bottle of champaign! We the most wonderful time and a very relaxing trip! The cabin is very nice and comfy! This is our second trip back and I'm sure will become a regular for us! Both me and my husband just love the place!!!THANKS SO MUCH FOR SHARING YOUR FARM!!!!Susan M
Rebecca H. from Hagerstown, MD recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in January, 2012 We absolutely enjoyed our time away. We are looking into coming again. The property was great, and the animals on the farm were so much fun. The house has everything you need and is so cozy.
A guest from Harrisonburg, VA recommends this property. Stayed for 2 days in January, 2012 We've rented several places in WV and this was our favorite so far. When we arrived, this cozy cabin had a fresh blanket of snow. Our family loved the property, the views, the wildlife, playing in the snow, and petting the horses. We're looking forward to returning!
A guest from Washington, DC recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in December, 2011 This was our second visit to Horse Camp, and we loved it as much - if not more - than our first visit. The location is pastoral and serene, and yet it proves an excellent gateway to the Valley, Davis, Elkins, etc. The loft is adorable, cozy, and has all the amenities one could hope for. Thanks for another fantastic stay!
Susan M. from Clendenin, WV recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in October, 2011 We absolutely loved the place!!! We have traveled all over the US and this has been our most favorite! We plan to go back in February and then in the spring with our teenage kids and bring their horses with them! The cabin is beautiful and the kitchen is stocked so well. A very comforting and relaxing atmosphere! A slice of Heaven! Thanks so much!!!!
A guest from Washington, DC recommends this property. Stayed for 2 days in September, 2011 We had a fantastic stay at Horse Camp with our hounds; the setting is idyllic, the environs were breathtaking, and the loft itself was clean and cozy.
Dennis T. from Pittsburgh, PA recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in September, 2011 We liked the property very much but had some reservations about internet access, cell phone coverage (we had an emergency), lack of common area sitting space, and one bathroom. The property is practical for no more than two people. It is spotlessly maintained and in a great location for visiting Seneca Rocks, Spruce Knob, and Canaan Valley.
A guest from Sea Girt, NJ recommends this property. Stayed for 5 days in August, 2011 we have been using vacation rentals for perhaps five years. This has been the best!! This rental is a new addition built onto a barn... but do not worry there is no commotion at night, no odors wonderful views of fields and hills as far as the eye can see...when we were there the horses stayed in the fields adjacent to the apartment, cows in fields also adjacent, guinea hens waiting in the morning. very peaceful.about 20 minutes from blackwater falls
Jillyn D. from Alexandria, VA recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in May, 2011 Horse Camp is a really great place to get away from it all. The apartment is beautiful - the pictures really don't do it justice. The entire place is comfortable, beautifully furnished and decorated, and spotlessly clean. The owners, who live on a property across the street and out of sight, make great efforts to ensure that every need is covered. Their son even brought us firewood for the fire pit outside and started it for us! The resident horses are sweet and friendly, as are the pair of guinea hens that occasionally roost on the front porch and peer into the living room windows. It's a bit of a jaunt from DC, but the scenery on the drive is truly spectacular! Thank you for a lovely stay and a really wonderful holiday weekend!
Sara P. from Mount Hope, WV recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in May, 2011 What a true treasure in the mountains. The views, the peace, the clean and cute apartment, the super comfty bed and the fresh yummy eggs given to us by the owners made our stay one to remember. From the reservation process with Donna to the weekend stay, I was treated with top notch customer service! I can't wait to vacation again at Horse Camp!
