The Quarterdeck Villa: A New York Loft with a Touch of Paris on a Salt Water Bay
The Quarterdeck was traditionally reserved for the captain of the ship as a center of command. These days its has inspired our walls of windows which open for everyone to enjoy the breathtaking views of land and sea that come in from the shores of our Nova Scotia tidal salt water bay.
This newly constructed home is designed to bring the outdoors in. Here spectacular natural beauty blends with the zip of New York and a touch of Paris. It’s waiting to welcome you home. Rest, recharge, relax and play: soak up the spirit of land and sea. It will nourish you to the bone.
When you arrive at our main entrance, you have a choice to climb upstairs to the great room or downstairs to the open concept apartment but it will be hard to keep from going immediately outside. You will want to breathe in that clean, fresh air and wade in the beach about 20 steps outside your door.
It’s all right, you don’t need to choose. In the Quarterdeck, the outside comes in to cradle you with the rhythm of the waves: magnificent natural landscapes furnish this great room even more than the sharp elegance and fine detail waiting to welcome you.
On your left is a sweeping view of the rolling green hills. It is vast pastoral land edged by trees which hug you through the far great room wall. You sink into that green splendour and simplicity so richly sweet as you relax into those rich red leather chairs.
Directly in front of you is Antigonish Harbour and an island just a ten minute canoe ride away – you could almost walk. It is a protected island with uncut forest so close you can almost touch it. And outdoor chairs are waiting for you to sit and enjoy the sunset over the water. You will see that the magic of The Quarterdeck lies in the wrap around windows which follow the wrap around deck bringing the seascape in from the outside too.
A dining nook cups the great room with black and red leather chairs ready to serve for extra living room seating too. Bar stools line the slate tile kitchen counters if you want to enjoy your coffee there as you soak in the sea through The Quarter Deck’s window wall. But you might be more comfortable in the window seat big enough for two, or three, or four, or five, or six…..or a full out-stretched you for an afternoon nap in the sun shining in from the sea. The outside is so beautiful, you might forget to look up at the wooden cathedral ceiling and the stained glass windows…..but I don’t think so.
The kitchen boasts rich, custom-built maple counters. Pull-out drawers contain everything you need, the standards and a little bit extra, too.
Return to the staircase and walk down one flight to the master bedroom. Here another walk-out deck through the French doors and walls of windows mean that you will soak in the natural goodness as you sleep, and come from the beach directly inside to shower if you wish...the beach is only about a minute away.
There's a lovely queen-sized bed, antique sitting and reading nooks, a massive walk-in shower and two walk-in closets that will be waiting for you here when you are ready. It is a wonderful place to lie in bed in the morning and look directly out on the water just 30ft away. Watch for the eagles and hawks and deer and rabbits, and the other winged and four-footed ones that live here too. And don’t forget your camera.
What more do you need? Well, you will find a laundry room and more sleeping space downstairs with ensuite bathroom.
More than that, there is a separate adjacent 2-level loft living space - a private adjoined apartment suite - for extra living space or multi-family get-aways. It enjoys a cozy bedroom and charming kitchen and bath. There are breath-taking views from the loft upstairs as well as from the downstairs direct access to the water. Two decks hug this section of the villa - one directly facing the water's edge and another on the east side of the building.
Suggested itineraries for exploring the area are provided. You can browse the many brochures for ideas. Hike pristine trails, cook lobster on the beach, swim the warmest waters north of North Carolina, check out summer theatre, tour an award-winning vineyard, and more. Day trip possibilities abound too, like hiking the spectacular Cape Breton Highlands, scouting for whales, or touring fishing villages. Halifax, Atlantic Canada's largest city, is two hours away.
Welcome to The Quarterdeck where you’re sure to enjoy a tranquil and relaxing stay!
