ONOMEA BAY CLIFFSIDE COTTAGE HAS ALL THE MODERN CONVENIENCES you'd expect in a high-end vacation rental. With sweeping ocean views from every room in the house, you'll spot whales passing by in winter and the distant lights of Hilo Bayfront. Even the private hot tub overlooks the cliffs and ocean!
THE KITCHEN IS FULLY EQUIPPED and features silestone countertops, a gas range and that fantastic view. Inside there is a dining bar to enjoy snacks, but the real treat is to dine out on the lanai!
THE MASTER BEDROOM HAS A KING SIZE Serta Perfect Sleeper Pillow Top bed and a flat screen TV. The bathroom features a beautiful tub for a relaxing soak as you stare at the unending ocean. There is an outside shower with bamboo privacy screens located on the bedroom lanai.

Stayed for 5 days in April, 2013 My husband and I's recent stay at the Onomea Bay Cottage has left us in a state of permanent relaxation.The views from this cottage I thought only existed in dreams.We are from a tourist resort region and were looking to esacpe from the resort environment. This was the perfect esacpe. We were able to come and go at our own pace. We loved being able to prepare our own meals and pack lunches in the beautiful, very well equipped kitchen.We woke up at 05:30AM every morning just to watch the sunrise over the ocean, after which we were greeting by adorable little gecko's sunning themselves. It was a short drive into Hilo, where there was a farmer's market everyday. On Wednesdays and Saturdays this quadrupled.Even though there is so much to see and do on the Big Island, we could have easily spent our entire vacation at the cottage. If fact, we have already started planning our next vacation to do just that.I would definitley recommend (and already have) this cottage for a vacation rental and when you do leave yourself a whole day for relaxation at the cottage. |

It is very easy to find and everything you would ever need, or think you did, is there for you. There is a very helpful guide the owners have assembled that was invaluable during our stay. This home is luxurious while at the same time feels cozy. There is lots of privacy which is important given the refreshing outdoor shower & awesome hot tub. The view is unbelievable and never gets old. The trade winds keep it nice and cool. The sound of the waves against the rocks below provide the perfect soundtrack. There is lots of wildlife from the frogs to the resident cardinal which make it quite enjoyable. We weren't bothered by bugs at all. Only reco would be if flying into Hilo head to the grocery store next to the airport before heading to Onomea Cliffside as it is right there and in the opposite direction of the cottage. The booking process start to finish was very professional and effortless. We've rented all over the world and this is by far the BEST vacation rental we've ever been to. A definite recommend that we almost want to keep a secret. |

Stayed for 9 days in December, 2012 Words are not adequate to describe this beautiful and spiritual place overlooking Onomea Bay and sitting atop the Hawaiian Botanic Gardens. It is absolutely stunning and fulfilling in every way. The cottage was pristine when we arrived and it was obvious that every detail had been attended to with care. If you have not been to Onomea Bay, you will not be disappointed. This is my favorite location throughout the Hawaiian Islands. The cottage provides for every need and the lanai and hot tub over-looking the bay are such a pleasurable experience! The outdoor shower, rather than being a detriment, was actually a decided plus as the view from the shower is also incredible.We saw the little wild pigs and many beautiful birds. We also enjoyed the sound of the Coqui frogs. Unfortunately, the whales did not honor us with a visit. Sunrises were worth arising early for and many rainbows were seen. Look away from the sun to see the rainbows, as they will form and disappear quite quickly. I recommend Hilo Bay Cafe, Seaside Restaurant, Ken's Pancake House, What's Shakin' (near Botanic Gardens, (try their smoothies and sandwiches/wraps) and the Blackrock Cafe in Pahloa(excellent prime rib special on Thursday p.m.).If you are so inclined, you can tickle the ivories on the baby grand piano which has been played previously by the likes of Paul Shaffer, Barry Manilow and other notables. We did a great rendition of Chopsticks during our stay!!Having stayed in Hilo at beach hotels previously, I can state with complete conviction, that the Onomea Bay cliffside cottage blows them all out of the water!!! We stayed 9 days and so hated to leave. So hope that we will be able to return someday.Enjoy!!! |

She was absolutely professional, but insisted that she started cleaning the bathroom first. It was kind of uncomfortable with a stranger in the bathroom with you as you are getting ready.Like I said, our fault, but maybe she could have started outside.All the best. Stayed for 14 days in September, 2012 This was our second visit to Onomea Cottage and we were so impressed the first time that we decided to treat ourselves for a two week stay this time around as we were celebrating our 50th Wedding Anniversary and it was the perfect place to choose. The view is spectacular and it is also very peaceful - a great place to relax and unwind. The pig family also payed us a visit along with their 7 very small piglets which was interesting to say the least. We enjoyed all the beautiful flowers, birds, geckos too. The only negative thing for us, being English, was that there was no kettle or teapot and could also have done with another saucepan, but that is a very minor complaint and we had a wonderful vacation and would love to return again sometime. |

Stayed for 3 days in August, 2012 I am a little hesitant to review Onomea Bay Cottage because I selfishly hope it will always be available for us when we come to Hawaii. The view is truly amazing, and I loved the privacy! It is really a hidden gem, and if it weren't for the written directions that came with our confirmation, our cab driver (and our gps) would never have found it. Everything was clean and well decorated. My husband was a little worried when he found out there was no air conditioning, but the breeze on the Hilo side up on that cliff is actually pretty cool. I had to sleep with blankets. We really loved everything about our stay, but I was surprised by how good the water was at the house. They filter rain water, and their tap water was the best tasting water I drank on the Big Island. Also, speaking of rain, watching the rain roll in over the ocean from the cliffside view was really amazing, and it is part of the reason I love the Hilo side. Oh, and keep your eye out for dolphins! At least 30 of them came in to the bay and gave us a great show! Bring binoculars if you can. |

From the deck, we saw humpback whales breaching, spinner dolphins chasing fish, three Hawaiian hawks circling right overhead, cattle egret flocks, akepa finches eating berries - just a truly incredible experience. Serenity, quiet, and incredible vistas along with unbelievable comfort. The sunrises and moonrises right from the bed - indescribably beautiful. A million stars overhead from the hot tub, and a lightning storm far out to sea...I want to go back right now. |

Stayed for 2 days in October, 2011 I'm still not sure how I came upon this place in my search for lodging but this was a welcomed retreat after the hectic pace my husband and I were experiencing at work. We arrived at the cottage at night so it was intimidating at first because it is pitch black beyond the cottage- you can't even see the ocean it's so dark. But in the morning, I awoke to the most amazing sunrise right there on the lanai. And it's secluded enough from distant neighbors that you really have legitimate privacy. The cottage is immaculately kept and the outdoor shower, while intimidating at first (being from the Midwest), was an absolute favorite. If I ever return to the Big Island, THIS is where I'll be staying. The only downside was that we were only there for 2 nights. Otherwise FABULOUS! |

The only thing I would add to the mix is a pair of mountain bikes and helmets that could be borrowed for taking local excursions on the scenic back roads along the coast...... Hilo also needs a good snorkeling rental shop where prescription goggles can be had for exploring reefs on the east side...... |

We also enjoyed the outside shower and the soaking tub. The botanical gardens below is worth as is a drive to Akaka Falls. Our only complaint is that there is no stereo in the cottage, and the i-pod dock has a very distorted speaker. Luckily we were able to play music through a laptop as the cottage does have wifi. We didn't believe it could be as good as the pictures looked, but it really is!The home was clean and well maintained with fantastic little touches (like the facecloths arranged like fans in the bathroom). It's extremely well equipped with everything you'll need during your stay and there's lots of helpful notes all around the property to help you make the most of your stay (like the one telling you the life story of the baby grand piano in the living room). We stayed in other properties that didn't have those little touches and it really makes a difference.As for the location, it's only 20 minutes out of Hilo so it's convenient for getting groceries and there's houses nearby, but it feels totally isolated, a fantastic retreat away from the world with the most stunning view over Onomea Bay. All you can hear is the sea and the wind in the trees.The whole rental process went smoothly and problem free and when we had to have a package delivered to the rental company they were accommodating and very helpful (phoning us when it arrived).All in all it was a week in paradise and we'll most definitely be back (and next time we'll be planning our holiday around this cottage's availability!) |

Stayed for 3 days in January, 2011 My stay at Onomea Cliffside Cottage was part of a last-minute planned trip to the Big Island. After scanning through and corresponding with many other rental websites for specifics, I was finally about to settle for one when I came across the Big Island Vacation Rentals website. Lucky! I wanted a cozy, private house with an unobstructed view of the ocean away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist scene, but not too far away to be cumbersome. The pictures and overview of the rental previewed much of what I was looking for, and after a couple of emails the representatives were more than willing to accommodate my last minute reservations. The presented directions were clear and specific, as I did not need to contact anyone for anything during my stay. The house and grounds were clean and beautiful set on the side of a sprawling cliff top with a gorgeous view of the ocean that seemed to go on forever past the horizon. Modern amenities were a big plus and added to the feeling of luxury in paradise. Take a bath with a view of the sun rising over the ocean? Check. A private hot tub under the stars? Check. The list goes on...The only shortcoming, if any, was that there was another house behind the rental which was specified prior to reserving. I was informed that the placement of vegetation as well as the distance would provide "plenty of privacy even when the part-time caretakers are in residence". I did not personally see the caretakers although they did come to and fro the property. They respected our privacy and did not detract from the serenity and tranquility of the experience.Onomea Cliffside Cottage packed the best bang for my buck...not only do I recommend a stay, I personally will plan to go back again! |
