House worked well for our needs. Would have preferred 2 bedrooms but did not schedule ahead of time. Susan Carrington was very helpful in getting us set up. The location was fantastic. Walking distance to downtown and local eateries was a plus. Felt that the $95 cleaning charge was a bit excessive. We are pretty tidy people. I believe my partner even washed the sheets and towels. Did break a wine glass...sorry about that.

Bend in need of Zen
A guest from Hamilton, MT does not recommend this property.
Stayed for 4 days in October, 2009
We stayed at Bend Zen for 4 nights in October 2009. Although the remodel of this small house is exceptional, we felt it was lacking some of the essentials for a vacation rental. The biggest issue was the bed that was worn out and VERY saggy in the middle. Even for the cuddliest of couples this is extremely uncomfortable and made for a less than restful nights sleep. For the price, I think a reasonable bed and bed linens is not too much to ask--and should be a priority for a vacation rental. It doesn't have to be fancy and expensive, just comfortable. In addition, the place was quite dusty and there were a few bad stains on the carpet--it made everything look a little sad. Although the kitchen and bathroom were clean, in general, the place was in need of a good scrubbing. As in some other reviews of this place, we also didn't have any luck with internet or the TV. I would suggest possibly leaving a few instructions for internet, TV, AND the fire place. We found the switch to turn on the fireplace, but it wouldn't actually work to turn it off--we had to use the switch underneath. It's a little stressful to not know what to do with a gas fireplace when you're trying to leave for the day to see the sights around Bend. This place has a lot going for it, but I wouldn't recommend this property in its current state.

We did enjoy or stay at the Zen Cottage, loved the design of the house and the location but there were a few things we think should be attended to:the mattress was bad, we bought a air mattress for the 2nd day. Because there was no air conditioning we had the use the huge fan, nice but it smelled of oil.The locks weren't working properly and it might a good idea to add a chest of drawers. Had to live out of the suitcase.Otherwise we loved it.thank you.

Hot Weather
A guest from Medford, Oregon recommends this property.
Stayed for 3 days in July, 2009
This property would be a GREAT rental during the spring, fall and winter seasons for two people wanting to explore Bend on foot. We stayed during one of the hottest spells Bend has seen in years which was most uncomfortable in the old house as it has no airconditioning and only one fan. We received one fan to assist with air circulation but it did little to comfort on the really HOT evenings. The plus side to the house is it is in walking distance to all downtown and old mill district activites. We loved this about the house. The tandeum raved about in the articiles proved to be most unuseful and unsafe, as it is not well cared for. This was very disappointing to our two children. We appreciated some of the ammenities in the house but the for the expense it was lacking in extra towels, sheets and seating for 4 as advertised as well. It would be a perfect for a couple. Lastly, I would suggest should anyone reserve this space soon that the owners put in a fire alarm as requried by state law.

Cute and comfortable

Overall we enjoyed our stay at Bend Zen very much! Two pieces of feedback though, include instructions on the wireless internet connection (it was spotty and only worked in certain spots of the house). We weren't sure where the router was located. Second, leave instructions on how to light the fireplace. It took us a day to get a call back from the owner who walked us through where/how to light the pilot light.

Property Manager Response:
Thank you for the comments we now have instructions for both. The wirelss works well at the dinning table and the switch is to the left of the fireplace.

A cute place in Bend

Though it was nice, it lacked kitchen items and an we had difficulty getting another bed for a teenager. They tried, but futon mattress uncomfortable and airbed didn't hold air. It was Xmas eve though. The heater stopped working while we were there as well; luckily there was a portable electric.

Property Manager Response:
The house is heated with the fireplace-we found out later the pilot light was not staying light due to air in the line! Portable heater always there for any needed backup.
