Best ever in Kapoho
Lorrett S. from Calgary, AB recommends this property.
Stayed for 3 days in February, 2013
We have been to Kapoho on numerous occasions and this was the best accommodation we have ever had. We could get up in the morning, walk down straight into the tidal pools and have a swim with the turtles even before coffee!! The property is ideally situated and very clean. We would definitely like to stay here again on our next visit to the Island but then we would bring our grandchildren along as the swimming is so safe and easily accessible, and swimming with the turtles would be a fantastic experience for them.

Linda W. from Alamogordo, NM recommends this property.
Stayed for 8 days in February, 2013
This was our second time at Hale Lokelani in less than a year. The last time was in Sept. and we saw a lot more turtles, but we had a wonderful time anyway. One of the highlights of the trip was snorkeling at night. I would highly recommend getting some underwater flashlights and give it a try. The second highlight was taking a helicopter ride to see the volcano. Seeing the lava flowing into the ocean was spectacular. We went with Blue Hawaii Helicopter Tours and they gave us a good trip. The house could use some updating. We found the blender in pieces and the can opener would hardly work. But overall, I love this house.

A guest from Fairbanks, AK recommends this property.
Stayed for 9 days in December, 2012
Overall we were very happy with this house and neighborhood--it was the second time we have stayed here. Beautiful location, very comfortable house. The only drawback was that the place seemed more run down than 5 years ago with more maintenance needs--downstairs screen door broken, banisters broken, need a new grill. It felt like the owners are trying to "get by" until the place sells.

Linda W. from Alamogordo, NM recommends this property.
Stayed for 5 days in September, 2012
The location of this house was ideal for people who want to spend most of their time snorkling. We saw turtles every time we went in. There were five there to greet us when we arrived. Couldn't wait to get in the water. The house is in good condition for it's age. The twin beds could use new mattresses. I would not recommend this house to anyone who had small children or children who aren't strong swimmers. Watch the tides! We are ready to book our next vacation at Hale Lokelani.

A guest from Yardley, PA recommends this property.
Stayed for 2 days in July, 2012
The upstairs master is in much better shape than the bottom floor. The location and snorkling were amazing and the turtles are just waiting to be seen. Incredible lizards and frogs were on the deck every night to view and listen to. The bedding on the bottom floor and the kitchen supplies need to be updated. There is NO connection except outside between the two floors. This is not ideal for families with small children. Everything is a bit worn but the location and snorkling are wonderful.

This was our second visit to Hale Lokelani and we hope to return again. The house is well-equipped and very comfortable. We included the downstairs unit, which was used by our adult daughter giving everyone some privacy. The location and the lagoon are the main attractions, however. Lots of fish to snorkel and green sea turtles every day on both of our trips. Quiet at night, too. You'll love it if you stay here.

This property would be great if the owner put alittle money back into it and did a complete overhaul. Location and access to Turtle Cove great along with the snorkeling. Good property if you dont's mind fifties dacor.

This house is on the best part of the bay, it is so private! It's built a little strange. The entire second floor is 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, kitchen that needs updated cookware, three eating areas and a living room. A huge lanai with an excellent view of the tide pool/lagoon and ocean. The downstairs has a bathroom, sleeps 4, has a kitchenette, separate entrance. Five of us stayed here Jan. 2012, loved it so much that 2 of us returned in April!

My 85 yo mother-in-law, my husband and two adult kids thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this comfortable family home. This is clearly a family retreat with the focus on location in a lovely neighborhood.

We absolutely loved staying at this vacation rental. How can you go wrong with an ocean view out the kitchen window, and the tide pools just steps away. We enjoyed snorkling, swimming, and just hanging out in the water with the turtles. It was absolutely magical. Our only complaint was the dated furnishings, dull knives, and worn towels and bed sheets. Those are all easy upgrades that would be much appreciated by all your guests. Wifi would also have been nice since our cell phones did not work. But then again, it was nice to be out of touch. Thanks for a wonderful relaxing time.

The house was just beautiful and had a view of the lagoons. It felt like old Hawaii. Very nice. We could swim in the warm lagoon and saw turtles and lots of fish. I enjoyed the Hawaiian music which played from the TV. There was a nice large bathroom. A wonderful and relaxing stay. The tidepools about 1 mile away were amazing - lots of different corral. It would be nice if the bed was King size - it felt like a full size. Overall, a wonderful place and I would like to come back again.

A guest from Honolulu, HI recommends this property.
Stayed for 4 days in November, 2011
It was a perfect place for my family and I to stay for a relaxing vacation. The location is amazing and I spent every morning snorkeling and swimming out back. I saw 8 sea turtles in less than 20 minutes! It is also a quiet and secluded neighborhood away from noise and crowds. The only issue I had was I thought there were two bedrooms upstairs and a separate cottage downstairs with one bedroom. But there is one bedroom upstairs and 2 connected rooms downstairs, with a flimsy door shade, not an actual door. But it worked out fine, just wouldn't recommend the downstairs rooms if you wanted more privacy.

Swim with turtles (& shark) at your doorstep in sunny Kapoho
A guest from San Francisco, CA recommends this property.
Stayed for 10 days in November, 2011
How better can that be? Away from the crowds on the Kona side, but still enjoy the sun & ocean on the rainy Hilo side! Get spoiled with geothermally heated ocean water right at your door step and snorkel with turtles and the reef shark. The house is very tasteful (all wood!) & clean (as clean as it can be in the humidity of the region). The only critique would be that the selection of pots and pans is limited - and that the advertised snorkeling equipment is unusable. (just bring your own!)

The entire area was breath-taking. The views from the house are excellent. It was quiet, private, and just the perfect place. We booked at the last minute took the first thing we could find on-line. Had no preference of island, just that it be private and quiet. I couldn't have picked a better place if I had searched for months and had done a lot of research. We would love to make it an annual trip and stay in the exact same place, Hale Lokelani. Can't say enough good things.

How lucky to be able to swim in your very own saltwater aquarium! This was an absolutely marvelous place to stay, and we would return in a heartbeat. There were more fish here than in the Champagne Pond down the road, so no need to walk farther than just down the steps. (Hint: while the water is clear anytime, the best time to snorkel is at low tide).

This was an absolutely beautiful place to stay. Walking down to swim with the sea turtles every morning was fantastic. The view from the lanai was breathtaking and so soothing. The kitchen had everything we needed and more. It was clean, but some pots and pans need replacing. It was tricky to find; lots of instructions to pick up key, and then on to the property. Management needs to provide better directions. We were excited to find snorkeling equip, but upon closer inspection, most of it was unusable,ie: torn, mismatched, broken. Could use a pull-out couch bed in the main living area. Overall, we were very happy. Thank you!!

Hale Lokelani at Kapoho Beach is a lovely home in a great location with lots of amenities (decent non-stick pots and pans, condiments, a variety of tourist books, fairly large screen flat TV, water shoes/snorkels/fins, etc). If I were the owner(s), I would: 1)recane the seats of the two kitchen chairs; 2) fix the sticky problem on the wood kitchen counters; 3) invest in good mattresses....the queen bed upstairs was very hard while the twin mattresses in the downstairs bedroom caved in the middle; 4) replace the air-conditioner in the upstairs bedroom; 5) upgrade the couch in the living room that was covered with a blanket. All of the couches had low backs that weren't particularly comfortable. Because the downstairs was separate from the upstairs, the house is more suited to two couples rather than a family with kids. For this reason, I would put a queen bed in the basement bedroom.

A guest from Venice, CA recommends this property.
Stayed for 5 days in January, 2011
We were excited to leave Kona and check out the Hilo/Puna/Kapoho area of the Big Island. Hale Lokelani did not disappoint! We immediately went to check out the private swimming tidepool where two turtles bobbed up from the water to say hello. My 10 year old son jumped in and started swimming. It turned out we had 4 turtles in our pond and tons and tons of fish and even an eel. The house is broken up into two. Upstairs with the master bedroom/bath and downstairs with a smaller unit with 4 twin beds. Our kids ended up sleeping on the sofas upstairs which worked out fine. The house was so comfortable and was very well equipped, large and clean. Even though some of the appliances were a bit tricky (dryer can only be used in the timed cycle or it would not stop) it was fine otherwise. We loved everything about the house, the location, how close we were to Champagne Pond (although to be honest, we felt that our private pond was the best compared to even Waiopae (Vacationland) ponds and even Alanahui which was packed with people. It was nice to get produce on Friday at nearby Green Lake farmers market. It was also nice to drive directly to the lava road near Kaimu which was so close and see real live lava demolish one neighborhood and the road. Overall, Kapoho Beach Community is a special place that we will definitely come back to. We found it to be the nicest neighborhood in all of the Big Island and hope to visit there again someday.

Glen M. from Victoria, BC recommends this property.

This is a great location. Your back stairs go directly into your own aquarium complete with turtles. I can't say enough about how unique and beautiful this setting is. The house is very well equipped with everything a renter can ask for including snorkel gear. We stayed a week and wish we had longer. The upstairs of the house is awesome. The downstairs suite is much smaller and the kitchen is not full so if you need a full kitchen you have to use the one upstairs. Some of the house needs some maintenance (like gutters and hand rails on stairs)but it doesn't interfere with the enjoyment of the house. It was very clean and there was music playing for us when we entered. It was a nice Hawaiian touch which certainly made us feel welcome. If you want to explore the east side of the Island I would certainly recommend this place. We can hardly wait to go back.

Amongst the many emails we received regarding the booking, we mistakenly printed off the wrong email and arrived late afternoon on a bank holiday without the proper information to get access to the property, only realizing our error upon arrival. As it took several hours before we could contact someone on the emergency number, we had some moments of stress, wondering if we would be able to get access at all. However once we did, we had a wonderful time and really enjoyed our stay.

Very nice place for someone who wants to get away from it all and basically isolate themselves from all society. The "no visitors" rule needs to change because it made me feel like an inmate on lockdown with absolutely no visitation rights! Both neighbors homes were about 20 feet away from the house. The neighbors on Kapoho Joe's side were very unfriendly. They let their little mutts run around and continuously barked at us. They often wondered back and forth through the back yards of a few properties including Hale Lokelani. ALL OF THE NEIGHBORS ARE WATCHING YOU!!!!!

A guest from Sunnyvale, CA recommends this property.

Very nice house and location on water is great. Sheltered lagoon was good for kids to swim all day. Main apartment upstairs was pretty and kitchen was very functional. Lack of cell phone coverage was disappointing. Some maintenance needed to keep the house looking and working great. Window over laundry was broken, toilet upstairs was slow, and curtain/door to downstairs bedroom was breaking.

The property manager was really accomodating, considering our last-minute request. This is really a fabulous place, location, everything. But the maintenance needs some attention. The ice-maker was not working, nor the air conditioner. We made do without either. Actually, a ceiling fan would work better than fixing the air conditioner.Nevertheless, we would happily go back.

Hale Lokelani - best yet in Kapoho
Charles H. from Mission Viejo, CA recommends this property.

We absolutely loved Hale Lokelani. The house was nicely furnished and well stocked. It was just as described. Best of all was the lagoon just down the back steps. Snorkeling with sea turtles and many tropical fish was an amazing experience. The turtles were present every day of our 7 day stay. We have stayed at 4 Kapoho rentals. All were nice but we're sticking with Hale Lokelani in the future.

The beds in the house really need an upgrade. The furniture is pretty beat up too. The airconditioner in the bedroom is shot and as we've been there twice it gets super hot. The pond is obviously the best draw--- but honestly we might look elsewhere in Kopoho to rent because everyone in our group did not like the bedding. Cheers and aloha from Kona---

Great location on the water, excellent house, good supply of various things in the kitchen, close to latest lava sites and other interesting places.House needs new chairs in the kitchen (some are too old and shaky). No cell phone service (at least, for Verizon) and no long distance service from the home phone - very inconvenient in some situations!

Kevin G. from Carlsbad, CA recommends this property.
Stayed for 4 days in May, 2010
We were a little apprehensive when we first arrived; the location is very remote and their was a Gecko and roach welcoming committee (outside the house - not inside). But after a good nights sleep and waking to the beautiful sounds of the ocean, and then walking out on to the deck to the beautiful, private secluded warm cove all concerns disappeared. We spent 3 days laying on our private deck swimming with the turtles, fish and yes, non biting sharks! The water is very warm from the hot fresh water entering in from the volcano and the neighborhood is friendly and just a joy to walk through and enjoy the beauty at every turn. The house is very comfortable with all you will need to enjoy your stay, it is remote for a reason - you wanted to get away right? The gated entry keeps "tourists out and this is really a good location for seeing the lava flow down the road. Be sure to stop in at Kaleo's in Pahoa - awesome food - and Jeff at the surf shop can set you up with snorkel gear. The house kitchen and cabinets as well as the bathroom need updating and the beds are certainly not the Ritz but all in all we would stay here again and the property managers went out of their way to make sure we were happy with our stay. Also just be aware that the bedrooms downstairs are completely separate from the upstairs and require walking outside and downstairs to get to them- My teenage boys actually loved the privacy.

Only caveats: neighboring houses are close by, were not occupied most of the time while we were there except except for gardeners and brifly by anothe couple - may not seem so "away from it all" if they were occupied. The bedroom has poor circulation and gets pretty warm, could use a ceiling fan, or a floor fan to improve circulation - fan that was there was too noisy to use.

We knew it was going to be wonderful to stay at Kapoho, but did not expect to find ourselves enjoying such a beautiful home. The house is so charming and beautiful with all the wood....parkay floors, wood counters....and had everything we needed from cooking utensils and dishes to beach towels and snorkeling gear. We loved being here and will definitely come back if and when we are blessed to return to the Big Island one day.The house was very clean and welcoming. We did have a little difficulty getting the entrance gate to work....but that may have been because we are not accustomed to using such devices.

It was a lovely spot and a great house. There were many thoughtful additions - the straw hats for example. Our only disappointment was with the downstairs bedrooms - there was not a double bed but rather two singles in the front room and the kitchen did not have a kettle (we are all tea drinkers) so those downstairs had to come up whenever they wanted a cup of tea. But as I say, the rest was so lovely that these disappointments did not matter too much.

The property is in a wonderful location, right on the tidepools at Kapoho. Most of the properties in this enclave are funky and look to need maintenance, this property included. But the location was delightful, we drove up to see the volcano, were well located for night volcano viewing; found fabulous meals in nearby town; enjoyed the swimming. this was a nice contrast from the fancy modern condos on the Kona side...

Aloha! This rental home has just about everything you could want while on vacation. Truely a home away from home. From snorkel/float gear, curling irons, books, to even a picnic basket! It's there. We had a truely relaxing, peaceful time and even though there are houses close, we had the Lagoon to ourselves the whole time. Loved the cool ocean breezes/views even when it rained. (Smelled so refreshing) We couldn't find anything wrong with this vacation spot.

The supurb location makes up for the property being a little run down and dated. There is a long flight of stairs up to the main living level, which is very spacious, open and pleasant. The kitchen is far better equipt than most rentals. The master bedroom has poor natural ventilation but there is an air conditioner for that room only. Views from front and back decks are breathtaking. Swimming in the ocean inlet has good access (stairs) from ther property...that's a rarity in this region. Sea turtles frequent the inlet and you can see them while swimming and even from the deck.we did not use the downstairs.

Hale Lokelani was a beautiful house in a totally unspoilt region of the Big Island. We had read the reviews but never thought it could be as good as it sounded. However it went beyond our expectations. The house really did have easy access into a beautiful private warm lagoon where the turtles came swimming with us every day. The house was beautifully appointed and the kitchen better equipped than any rental property we have ever been in, including our own weekender! Even down to lots of recipe books for those who really want to cook. And believe us once you arrive here you won't want to go far afield. But it was an easy trip to see the Volcano National Park and lava flowing into the Ocean at night. The house had a guest book and printed material which helped us explore some more local sights (which were not to be found in the general tourist guides). We have 4 children aged 15 to 7 and they all loved it. Our only regret....that we couldn't have stayed longer!

Only real drawback was not having cell service at the house and internet access. On the other hand, my wife was happy to not have those things for a change. Quality of the snorkeling was a bit imbellished. Yes there were turtles, but not much else, and the water wasn't as warm as suggested in the literature. The Hot Pool was a fun find, down the road to the south.

Its a great place to stay if you just want to relax, Kona where most of the activities are is about 3 hours away. But it is near Hilo, Lava Tree State Park and closer to Volcano National Park. The lagoons are nice for snorkeling but visibility is decreased by thermal inversion layers. Nice snorkeling in cooler water in vacation land a short walk or drive away. Cool turtles and fish. It was my father's 75th birthday surprise organized by yours truly and I didn't quite know what to expect from Hale Lokelani based on the online specs. It turned out to be just perfect for our family of 4 adults. We spent hours in the tidewater pools, snorkeling with the turtles and fishes. On sunny days we were amazed how warm the water temperature got with the thermal vents acting as heaters. We even got my father to snorkel for the first time in his life and he loved it (after being really hesitant and trying all kinds of excuses to get out of it). We had great fun cooking local food and eating fresh fruits and coconuts that fell from the trees near the waterfront. The house had ample space and supplies of bath and kitchen supplies for all of us to be comfortable and the assortment of snorkeling gear was very useful. The neighborhood was very nice and walking around we saw all kinds of trees and birds and the sea views from the rock wall was great. The neighbor's had tidepools for backyards. We all had a wonderful time and would love to go back again. Do eat at Paolo's Bistro in Paho if you get a chance and listen to the Kaloli band in the Punatic Internet Cafe - they are very good.

This was my family's first trip to Hawaii, we wanted to experience both sides of the island. It is a bit of a drive from Kona, but well worth the effort. This is a very unique enviroment. It is a little cooler than the other side, but does not get as much rain as Hilo. The water was alway very warm thanks to Pele. The snorkeling was great and the back yard access to the water was unbelievable. We swam with huge sea turtles everyday. If you can rip yourself away it is a close walk to the Champange Pond, awsome swimming. Also very close to the Kapoho tide pools, accessed from Vacation Land, very cool snorkeling in very calm and protected waters. My 6 year old daughter was able to learn how to snorkel very easily. Also very easy access to the volcano park, and to the location of the current lava flow. I would recomend this place to anyone considering a trip to the other side of the island. Mahalo

Not having internet (wireless) available is very annoyiny in this day & age.It was annoying that the water was cut off a few times but I realize that was not the management's fault. There wasn't any dishwasher soap when we arrived but the cleaning woman was kind of enough to bring us some. The market didn't carry it either. Chair in bedroom near desk has broken arms, kitchen chairs have broken webbing. Most other things were in good shape. Hawaii is remote--and this place is in one of the more remote corners of the island. And that's exactly what we were looking for on our honeymoon. Nearly surrounded by water, reasonably close to Volcano National Park, but away from any hustle and bustle. So big thumbs up on location. The house itself is in good shape--but the appliances were a wee bit old and (biggest issue), there was no water filter for the tap water--which was pretty gnarly tasting. But on the plus side, you can literally walk out the back door into water. Having a full kitchen is a big plus as well--it's a good 20 minute drive to any place to eat, so hit the grocery store in Pahoa before checking in.
