Vacation Home Rental Description:

IF YOU WANT THE FEELING OF BEING ON A SHIP without the movement, this is the place to be! Located in Hawaiian Beaches (about 20 miles south of Hilo), Hale Ehu Kai is a 2-bedroom, 2-bath HANDICAP ACCESSIBLE AND WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE vacation rental house on the Big Island of Hawaii in an area with magical views and other beautiful homes.

RELAX IN THE HOT TUB ON THE LANAI and see whales and spinner dolphins (in season). The lanai is extra wide for outdoor dining, and a lava barbecue is right out in front. The name Hale Ehu Kai (Sea Spray) is very appropriate for this home as you watch the waves splash against the rock cliffs.

YOU'LL SEE UNOBSTRUCTED OCEAN VIEWS from the living and dining rooms, kitchen, and oceanfront bedroom. The living area is spacious, with beautiful floors and a tiled kitchen. Ceiling fans help keep the house cool, and the owners have thought about your comfort by providing a TV, DVD, stereo with CD, along with a collection of videos. The home has high-speed Internet and there is a washer/dryer.

THE MASTER BEDROOM OFFERS A KING BED, the oceanfront bedroom has a queen bed, and the living room has a double futon. There are two baths, an en suite master bath and a second bath with a Jacuzzi tub. As an extra touch, the house was built to be accessible by the disabled, with a ramp to the front door, wide interior doors, and roll-in shower.

THERE ARE MANY INTERESTING AREAS NEARBY where you can go snorkeling, swim in a thermally heated hot pond, and see recent lava flows from the Kilauea Volcano. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is less than an hour away.

Johanna N. from Davie, FL recommends this property.

This Place was great! We were very pleased to find it was very clean and neat. We were surprised at how well equipped it was. Providing everything from a cooler to beach towels to everything a vacationer could need! They also provided a guide with local markets, attractions, and other useful information. The view was amazing! We were able sleep with the doors open to let in the cool breeze and the sounds of the ocean. We loved how it was on a local village and allowed for us to get a feel for the local side of the island. It was a great experience and we would definitely recommend it!

Amazing view
A guest from Warner Robins, GA recommends this property.
Stayed for 3 days in April, 2014
Nicely equipped and clean property. As other mentioned, it is probably tough to maintain the doors facing the ocean due to the constant salt/water misting going on. (You are on the water!) the lack of locks on the back doors was our only complaint. PVC pipe held the doors shut as locks were rusted beyond proper function. The view, sounds of the ocean more than made up for this one downfall!!

Great house and great view/directness to the ocean and view of whales and turtles. Deck was big and great to spend time at. Inside was also very nice overall. Only minor thing was that 'attractions' in Puna/Pahoa area was a bit far away. But overall great house and time spent there.

Hale Ehu Kai Feb 2014
A guest from Corvallis, OR recommends this property.
Stayed for 3 days in February, 2014
Outstanding property. Exceptionally clean, well equipped kitchen, spectacular view and great place for morning walks with little traffic. Ceiling fans in all rooms allowed excellent air circulation and cooling. Nice hot tub on the deck accommodates 1-2 comfortably. Though we did not need it, the house is very handicap accessible. The ramp to the front door made bringing in luggage very easy. The mattress in the street side bedroom was a little too soft for our taste, but good quality and clean. At night, the Croqui frogs are noisy (read about them on Wikipedia and listen to their call on You Tube.) Some of the people in our group liked the sound; it kept others awake. Same with the wave noise in the back bedroom. A major attraction for some; bothersome to others. We are regulars to the Kona coast, but this was the first time for an extended stay to Hilo. As expected there was more rain, but temperature was still warm. The location is perfect to get away from traffic, but 6.5 miles from nearest grocery or restaurant, and about 18 miles to Hilo airport or town. Need to plan ahead on groceries if you want to stay in place and avoid driving. About a 45 minute drive to Volcano National Park. Recommend a helicopter tour over the volcano from the Hilo airport if time and weather permit.

View from lanai was nice but many negative things about house, location, and security make a review impossible. We found this house on internet 4 years ago and thought it would be the dream house to spend a vacation. Thought we wold be starting a new tradition and renting each year. This our 4th time in Hawaii so we have stayed at other places that were much better. Would not recommend to anyone, A note to owner is that they should let guest know there is a young man that walks back and forth on the property and climbs down the cliff to use his knife to harvest some kind of sea animal. Also the smelly pillows in the main bedroom and the teflon pan with the black bits sticking up should be replaced because it is disgusting.

Linda H. from Liberty Lake, WA recommends this property.
Stayed for 8 days in November, 2013
No peek-a-boo ocean view here, Hale Ehu Kai is on a lava bluff a couple dozen feet from the rolling surf. It is a spacious, nicely furnished home, however it needs some TLC. We stayed there two years ago and it was in much better shape. Linens are old, kitchen ware in bad shape, rust everywhere. It must be very hard to combat the salt spray, so we sympathize with the owners.

Our family of four stayed 3 nights while visiting the "volcano side" of the big island and loved it. Great house and location, and the view was amazing. Amenities included everything you could wish for, so easy to borrow stuff for the beach or a thermos to go stargazing! We used it as a base to visit the Volcanoes Nat Park and drive the chain of craters road, do a sea lava tour and also a stargazing visit up the mountain!! Spent 4th of July in Hilo to round off our visit. Great value for money!

This home in Pahoa was a nice place to stay if you are looking for an accessible home on the Eastern Side. The sunsets were awesome, the sound of the ocean was very relaxing. We appreciated the binder left by the homeowners for places of interest and local map, we used that a lot. The home was very comfortable. We intended on using the hot tub, but we felt it was too warm outside to enjoy being in a warm hot tub, but it is a nice feature. The view from the deck was awesome. The home is in a nice quiet, well-kept neighborhood.

We were very pleased with this property. It was spotless (except the windows really needed washing). Our only complaint was a noisy neighbor who sawed late into the night and played his music quite loud. Not the fault of the property owners, we know. But be aware that there are neighbors in close proximity to the home. We enjoyed out stay, tho - and enjoyed seeing whales off shore as well as sea turtles in the waters in front of the home.

Everything was great with the house. However, in our correspondence arranging the rental it was not clear that we would have to pay extra if more than two people stayed at this two bedroom house. Our previous experiences with other rentals was that one rented a house for a fixed price for a maximum number of people.

Thank you for your review. This has been our policy (and the policy of most other management companies we know) for many, many years. Our website and every property page does state that there are extra fees for extra guests. One of many reasons for this poicy is simply that electricity is so expensive here, the Owners need to cover the additional cost of additional usage. Thanks for understanding! The amazing tide pools at Kopoho are just a short, beautiful drive away. Then top that off with a dip in the hot pool just down the road. If you are there on Wednesday night you MUST go to Uncle Roberts for true Aloha. The only bone to pick on the house are that all of the knives are crummy serrated knives. These people are not cooks. If you are, bring your favorite knife in your checked bag.Sunrises are fantastic. The Master bath shower is to die for.

Hello...we loved our vacation at Hale Ehu Kai. The house was extremely clean. The only problem we had was with the hot tub. There was no instructional sheet explaining how to set the we set it for a higher temperature and enjoyed it. Unfortunately we couldn't get it to turn off. after calling your company (and they very kindly called someone to come to the house), my husband went on line and found the website that had directions...and we were able to put it in the economy mode (and we cancelled the need for a repair man). That said, we had a lovely time in Hawaii...your staff were all very helpful and kind...and cudos to Tara for finding us a rental car!!!! MAHALO.

Stayed for 15 days in December, 2012
Even though we enjoyed our stay, here are a few comments. It is OK with us if they are not posted. Aloha Coast was great to work with! Here are our concerns: 1.Hard to see house name on house and house numbers in dark. 2.Hot tub not super and purifying directions are not up to date nor were supplies to use provided adequately 3. Basic cleanliness was adequate, but house is in need of a more detailed cleaning--baseboards, picture frames and glass, furniture, lamps, laundry area. Lots of old, clinging dust, etc. 4. Better lighting for reading in livingroom and both bedrooms needed. 5.Outside of house (ocean side)needs attention. 6.Barbeque set up somewhat disappointing 5. No wireless internet (not sure what was stated in advertising)7.Right front burner on stove did not work. 8.Light bulb out over sink (1 of 3) 9.Locks on lanai sliding doors do not lock--livingroom and bedroom. Told to use PVC pipe in track--kind of unsettling as we've experienced a breakin in another rental house in area. Loved shower in master bedroom, the view, large lanai except that lanai could use somesort of decoration so not to appear so stark to visitors (something weather tolerable and Hawaiiana!). Chairs were comfortable in livingroom area, but a bit low for handicapped person for ease getting out of chair. We'd have to check on the status of the suggestions above to determine whether we'd rent or recommend this particular house again. Also, master bed had a "topper" and had a tendency to want to "dump" an edge sleeper. Bedding could be upgraded a bit for a vacation house. Comments are meant to help! :+)

Very nice location but not quite as isolated as the photograph would lead you to believe. The plastic frame sliding doors and screens needed adjustment but outside of that the house had everything you could ask far. Kitchen supplies were excellent. The view from the deck is great---However, there is no beach access. I would not take small children here because there is a vertical drop to the water. Overall, a great place for adults.

We had a wonderful time at Hale Ehu Kai. Perfect location for waking up by the dramatic ocean and traveling relatively short and scenic distances to the volcano, snorkeling, lava viewing, black sand beach, groceries and restaurants. Very safe-feeling and quiet neighborhood (except for the chorus of frogs and crashes of waves that lulled us to sleep each night!) The hot tub was a treat, but cold and a little dirty & smelly when we arrived. Had to run the filters & warm it up before using. Very well stocked house had everything we needed!

Absolutely Amazing Place
A guest from Pittsburgh, PA recommends this property.
Stayed for 3 days in July, 2012
We were a little hesitant about renting a house on the coast using the internet but the Hale Ehu Kai was like a dream come true and even exceeded our expectations. It is a beautiful and a simple home set on volcanic rocks at the ocean. Neighboring houses are not very close and next touristy locations are many miles away so you can feel like you are at the end of the world and the entire ocean is yours. The waves constantly break almost at your balcony creating a truly wonderful atmosphere and as the house's name suggests (Ocean Spray House) you can breathe and even feel the ocean spray on your skin when staring at the waters. We arrived late but all lights were on and beautiful Hawaiian music was played from the speakers. We had a lovely dinner (kitchen is fully equipped) listening to the waves. Every morning all we had to do is open the curtains and we could watch the sunrise right in front of the bed. The house is very well furnished, has all the beach equipment. Nothing fancy but comfortable and homy. The vegetation in the area is so lush and beautiful you really feel a tropical atmosphere. In our experience it did not rain much more on the east coast than the west coast and all showers pass very quickly (few minutes) before sunshine comes again. The only downside is the tropical climate which requires some additional effort to keep the bugs away. The bed mattresses were also a little too soft for our taste. Also, you need to drive a bit to find some pools where swimming is possible because most of the Hawaii island coastline is very wild. There are also few beaches close by where kids could play but the pools are great for snorkeling.

We rented a car and drove everywhere, even though there are handy stores nearby, 5-10min drive to grocery and 20mins to Hilo. We loved it!!! Thank you

Beautiful accommodations on an amazing rock cliff location. We awoke to the sounds of the ocean and had great experience at the house. It was clean and well stocked, everything we needed! Dinner on the patio was wonderful and the location was great to visit nearby attractions or just take an exploration drive along the coast! When we return, we would stay at Hale Ehu Kai again!

We had an excellent experience with the Big Island Vacation Rentals/Hawaiian Holiday property management. They always were quick and professional with their email responses and made sure everything was add prefect as possible. The home itself was really cute, had everything we needed and more including a fantastic spa on the lanai which we enjoyed every night as we watched the waves roll in. It was so relaxing to see the ocean at our back door first thing in the morning and have the waves lull us to sleep at night. Quiet neighborhood, away from traffic but that also meant a 30+ minute drive to get to attractions/restaurants/shopping. We didn't really mind though BC it was a pleasant drive. Definitely recommend for anyone wanting a private getaway on the Big Island who is passionate about the ocean as I am.

My husband, father-in-law, and I stayed at this wonderful East Hawaii coastline hideaway for one week and loved every minute of it. We had to travel back and forth to Hilo quite a bit to spend time with our daughter who graduated from the university there. Every time we drove away from the house, I was sad to leave. The owners have provided not only a very comfortable home, but a clean and well-stocked one as well. But, if I had to state what I loved the best, it was the amazing view of the ocean it had. I am a water colorist and would love to return for a month just to paint every day I'm there. Oh my God, it was astoundingly beautiful there. We were also taken with the Kopoho Kai tide pools we found thanks to the suggestion sheet available to us. It was my first time snorkeling and I was enthralled with the experience. The drive down Papio (Government Street Road) was a definite treat as we saw such a variety of scenes: little secret beaches, thick jungle with long, trailing vines, and the volcanic terrain. Wow! I loved being able to cook every day in the spacious kitchen. If we had to complain about something, it would be that the hot tub really didn't get hot enough to enjoy. Thank you though for such an awesome experience at Hale Ehu Kai!!!

Ehu Hale Kai was our perfect home base for three days while exploring the Hilo side of the Big Island. The parts we liked best were: the well-stocked and -equipped kitchen; the ideal location in a peaceful residential neighborhood away from traffic and crowds yet only a short drive to Hilo, tide pools and beaches and Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park; the completely unobstructed and expansive view of the ocean; the ever present sound of the breaking waves and the nightly chorus of frogs. The owners and the rental staff were very professional and thorough in preparing us and the home for our stay.

Amazing location just yards from the pounding surf. Cozy house cooled by constant on-shore breezes, very well furnished and the hot tub overlooking the sea was an added bonus. Especially appreciate frig and cupboards stocked with condiments and bathrooms with shampoo, etc. East side of Big Island is known for rain, so just go with it. Sun comes out sooner or later.

Our stay at Hale Ehu Kai was fantastic! The cleanliness of the house was so much appreciated. The sound of the ocean waves lulling us to sleep every night was heaven. We explored the island by day and each day on the way back to the property, we stopped at the local stands and bought fresh fruit, then stopped at the market to buy steaks and such. We would go back to Hale Ehu Kai and cook on the grill. So much fun! We will definitely recommend this property to fellow travelers. Thanks for a wonderful time.

Great location close to Volcanoes Ntl Park, Kapoho Tide Pools, warm pools, Lava Tree State Park, etc. Groceries, shops and restaurants nearby. A great kitchen with lots of cookware, comfortable loungers and beds. We will miss hearing the ocean waves and coqui frogs each nt. Thanks to the owners for a great local driving guide. Don't miss having lunch at the small Village Cafe at the "end of the road". Delicious grilled fish and mac-nut pie. None of us wanted to leave-we will definitely stay here longer next visit!!!

It was nice to have some coffee, food, and plenty of toilet paper to start our two weeks off. We read everything we could get our hands on and enjoyed the tide pools and especiall the Hot Pond. We toured Hilo and vicinity, enjoyed the volcano, and spent a lot of time on the Lanai. We loved walking through the neighborhood in the morning, admiring the houses and the flowers and tropical fauna. The weather was great, cloudy, but warm and very little rain. For our 50th anniversary it was wonderful.

Stayed for 7 days in September, 2011
As expected, Hale Ehu Kai was beautifully situated by the ocean. Of all the vacation houses we have stayed at over the years (in the U.S. and abroad), Hale Ehu Kai has the best ocean side location. It sits on a small black lava cliff, overlooking a rocky "beach". It would not be safe to swim here, although the surf is both very near and very spectacular. We truly enjoyed watching the turtles in the surf every day while eating breakfast and dinner on the deck. The one minor nit that we had concerned the quality of the furnishings and fittings. In vacation houses like this one, we are used to seeing at least a mid-grade finish. We don't need luxury, but we do appreciate authenticity. Although the house is certainly serviceable, the imitation wood deck, imitation wood floors, and thick foam pads (think Home Depot and on sale) that have inexplicably been placed on all the mattresses are hard to understand... We realize that getting a real wood deck and real wood floors would be a major expense. But, even just removing the odd and uncomfortable foam pads from the mattresses would be a big step in the right direction.Overall, however, these nits having to do with the quality are out weighed by the house's spectacular location. We recommend this house without reservation to anybody looking for a quiet getaway with a spectacular view of the ocean. It would be even better if the deck and floors were real wood and the beds didn't have the crazy foam pads (these are not fastened down, the temporary fix is left as an exercise for the reader)...

We have spent there one week and it was definitely too short to visit Hawaii island. The house has an outstanding view and very nice owner (come to fix leaking wather). Interior is spacious, in a good condition and very well equipped (microwave, fridge, washing machine for dishes and closes, dryer etc.). There are some issues like everywhere: - Jacuzzi was much worse than on the picture (old, dark green) and heating didn?t work - Some equipment was out of order (the house requires repairs) - The house exterior is rusty (because of the ocean proximity) - Cleaning is acceptable but could be better - Localization is away from any shops so you have to drive min. 15 minutes to buy anything Overall it is good but I?m not sure if worth the price ($1300/week).

The picture I saw on the website did not appear to be current. House was clean, loved the view. reservation folks were great. locks on sliding glass doors rusted out and doors were "secured' with a piece of PVC piping. I thought that was somewhat below my expectations for the price of the unit. and I would get rid of the "fur" pillow on bed in 2nd bedroom as the cleanliness of such of item would at best be slim. we were happy to be there, and the view and proximity to the ocean made up for anything that wasn't excellent. thanks.

Waking up and realizing you are sitting on the edge of nothing but ocean makes for a very dramatic and stunning way to start the day. The house and location is ideal for anyone just wanting to chill out away from it all even if the kid is with you as there is plenty of room. But if you do venture out, we discovered a bunch of really cool things to see and do in the immediate area thanks to the handwritten notes found in the cottage which was an appreciated touch. BTW, the main bathroom has a fantastic shower - better than most hotels and certainly better than most other houses. In fact, the house is generally outfitted better and is more cozy than any other we have stayed in. We highly recommend Hale Ehu Kai to anyone considering a stay in Puna.

Hear the Roar of the Ocean
Brenda D. from Sunol, CA recommends this property.
Stayed for 7 days in October, 2010
Brenda and I stayed in this relaxing setting for a week with another couple. If you are looking for a place pretty much out of the way from the busy city or even town life this is the place to go. We were more on the go so found the long drives tiring by the end of the day. We found the few neighbors we saw very warm and friendly. We loved the warm springs down the road. Also the occassional turtle popping his head up above the surf kept us on the lookout. The home had most of the kitchen accessories necessary for a comfortable stay although the blender had a crack in the base and leaked every time you put liquid in it. We found the beds quite comfortable. If it wasn't for the gorgeous sunrises most mornings I would have been in bed much longer. The overall stay was very relaxing. Until we stayed in this home so very close to the ocean we never understood how damp and how corrosive the air could be. The floors in the morning were always damp to the barefoot. When we arrived the towels all had a musty smell to them probably from the damp air as did the washing mashine when we tried to wash the ordor out. Eventually we got everything smelling fresh. Also the TV Dish remote did not work properly. It was very difficult to get from station to station. Probably due to corrosion on the terminals. Someone might want to update the picture of the hot tub on this website and also on the calling cards which all show it as round. The square tub surprised us a bit. The jets on this hot tub were wimps compared others we have been in. I probably would have rated 5 on everything above had it not been for these few inconveniences. A few fixes and this could easily have been a 5 star. All in all we had very relaxing time on this our first stay on the Hilo side of the Big Island. Thanks so much for sharing this home with us.Al and Brenda Du Charme, Sunol, CA

My family really enjoyed Hale Ehu Kai. We loved it so much that we extended our stay a couple of days. It was great waking up to the crashing waves and sea turtles. Our only issues were that the hot tub was not the one pictured, the actual hot tub is pretty barely fits 2 comfortably. The other thing is that the screen doors are very rusted and the guest bedroom door fell on my 4 yr, old twice. No serious injury, but it was a bit scary. If it fell on a toddler or baby, it could hurt them. Also, it gets extremely windy here, so if you don't like the wind, this may not be the house for you. All in all it was a wonderful place to stay. The booking staff were extremely helpful and very nice to deal with. I would recommend this house to others and may return next year for another stay. I would definately recommend Big Island Vacation Rentals as your source to finding the perfect house for your Hawaiian get away.

My wife and I had a great time at this home. One of the best parts was actually the notebook of suggestions of things to do left there by the owners. We had a great time snorkeling at the tidepools nearby. The little town of Pahoa was also a real treat, with some reasonably priced restaurants - one of our meals was a delicious spaghetti dinner for only $6/person (Boogie Woogie Pizza). We also had a good Thai meal at Ning's Thai Cuisine. We heard stories of the rain, but for the four days we were there, I think it only rained once during the day for a short time in the morning.

Incredible views of the color in the ocean. good place to start excursions from. The Hot Tub water was a bit murky for our taste (We didn't go in it for that reason)and would have requested new water if we had been there 5 or more days. My son used it though! The location is quiet, except for the ocean, and is just a short drive from Hilo. The house was wonderful, well taken care of, spectacular view right on the ocean. The owners have done a fantastic job of creating a lovely vacation home. The down side for us was the weather and somewhat the location. Wild wind and rain a good portion of the time. The immediate surrounding neighborhood was nice, but it felt like one didn't have to go far to get to some pretty run-down sketchy areas with some fairly sketchy characters. If one was looking for total privacy and relaxing time with no regard for weather, then this place is ideal. The hot tub on the deck was great, a huge plus. My favorite thing that we did in the area was to go to the Kapoho tide pools and snorkel. WOW! That was the best snorkeling I've ever experienced...unbelievable coral and beautiful fish! Also it was great to have Volcano NP so close. We had a great day there and it didn't rain!

Cold and Damp
Otis & Brenda B. from Irvington, VA does not recommend this property.
Stayed for 9 days in January, 2009
It would be much more comfortable if the house had an air conditioner and heater to remove the dampness and warm the house during the winter months. The temperature remained mostly in the upper 60's and it rained every day that we were there. Even a window unit in each bedroom would be helpful. The house was cold and damp the entire nine days we were there. One of us ended up getting sick as a result of the cold and dampness. We would not recommend the Hilo side of the island. Kona is much nicer.

Happy Sounds

Aloha,If one enjoys the sounds of the ocean, waves crashing against rocks, this is the place for you!! The sound is just heavenly to my ears. I recorded the sound on my recorder, so that I can listen to it here in the middle of our high desert. The sound just lulled me to sleep each and every night. The house is very clean, decorated nicely and very well equipped with all our needs met. I was able to cook our Christmas dinner, including a small turkey without any trouble. The owners have thought about making it easy to live here for a while, rather than only thinking of it as a short time place to stay. It is also very nice that there are new and up to date DVDS to watch. Other places that we have stayed only have one or two paperbacks and that is about it. These folks have it set up as a place to call home for your stay. The other nice thing was that there was internet, included. My daughter was able to work on a class while she was there, which was very good.We have stayed at this house twice now and it is the best house. It is also very nice that the house is so very H/C friendly. Using one of the plastic chairs from the lanai, my husband was able to easily use the shower. Whenever, we are on the Hilo side of the island, I hope that this house is available. It is the best. It sure makes you want to tear up your return tickets and stay forever.I found the neighbors to be very friendly and helpful, too. The location of the house is not that far from grocery shopping either. At Christmas time, the little Christmas tree is nice. What a treat, after a long trip from the mainland to be welcomed into a beautiful little house with lights on, a fresh loaf of banana bread, a bowl of fresh fruit, and beautiful flowers. It sure made us feel welcome!!Happy New Year to All!!Susan Hudson

Hale Ehu Kai 'Home from Home in Paradise'
Debbie L. from Telford, NA recommends this property.

This vacation rental was exactly as described. It had all the amentities of home and couldn't have been closer to the ocean. We fell asleep each night to the sound of the waves. The owners had thought of everything and provided it, even down to flash lights essential for lava night viewing. Sharene & Sue at Hawaii Vacation Rentals where extremely helpful and made the reservation process easy to conduct via Email. We hope to return again to this property.

Home was beautiful. very relaxing and very well stocked. Location a bit questionable. We would stay again, maybe in the winter to hang out and watch whales.
