HALE KAKAHI IS YOUR VISION of the ultimate Hawaiian retreat. In Hawaiian, it means "unique, outstanding, one-of-a-kind house," a perfect name for this oceanfront estate. The owners have given thought to every aspect of your vacation enjoyment from free internet to a billiards room, read on!
ENTERING THE HALE KAKAHI GROUNDS, you travel down a long drive surrounded by plumeria, monkeypod, banana, and palm trees until you reach the elegant two-story home. The front door opens to the foyer and Great Room, where you are overwhelmed by the spectacular ocean view through floor-to-ceiling windows and across a broad lanai that extends across the entire front of the house. The interior is a wood-lover's dream with floors, walls, ceilings, counters and cabinets built from nine exotic woods, including koa, mango, Spanish cedar and purple heart.
BESIDES THE GREAT VIEW, the Great Room offers a comfortable place to visit and relax, with good reading lights and a TV/DVD for evening entertainment. For meals, you'll find a gourmet kitchen with a Sub-Zero refrigerator and other premium appliances, including two convection ovens. The cooktop/breakfast bar countertop is made from a single, gorgeous piece of monkeypod wood. You'll eat many meals on the lanai, and for indoor dining the travertine marble table in the dining area seats six.
A SMALL OFFICE OFF THE GREAT ROOM leads to the master bedroom. With a room like this, you won't want to get out of bed! The bed is a California King with a high-quality pillow-top mattress, and the room also has its own TV and DVD player. The bedroom has an en suite bath with a walk-in shower, Jacuzzi bathtub/spa, and double vanity. The entire house has ceiling fans and lots of floor-to-ceiling windows to keep you comfortable in our temperate climate (no air-conditioning!). An estate wouldn't be complete without a pool and the 30-foot lap pool is just outside the master bedroom.
BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE! That was just the upper level! Two oceanfront suites on the lower level provide accommodations for up to four more guests (accessed by an external staircase). The Akahi Suite consists of a main bedroom, adjacent bedroom/sitting room, and private bath. The bedroom has a firm king bed. The adjacent sitting room is equipped with conveniences including a Queen bed (great for young children to be close to parents!) TV, DVD player, radio/CD and telephone. Both rooms have ocean views and the full bath has a tub shower. The smaller Elua Suite has the same great ocean view as the Akahi Suite, with a queen bed and a full bath with stall shower. Guests in the Akahi and Elua suites can enjoy their morning coffee on the private lower-level lanai. In the separate Garage building there is also a Billiard's Room for guests to use, so bring your best aim!
THE NEARLY 3-ACRE HALE KAKAHI ESTATE includes a diverse mix of lush vegetation, manicured lawns, exotic fruit trees, waterfall, ponds, fountains, palm trees, magnificent lava oceanfront -- even a 50-yard golf tee and green! In season, whales pass by and play in the surf just offshore. The estate is in the quiet residential area of Hawaiian Beaches, which is great for walking. The town of Pahoa, with several restaurants and interesting shops, is less than 15 minutes by car. Hilo is about a 30-minute drive, and Volcanoes National Park is less than an hour away!

great spot! Reviewed by: Will M. recommends this property. Stayed for 2 days in January, 2013 Location is incredible, large lot and very private. Ocean sound at night is ominous, I enjoyed the loud crashing sound, in fact slept with the door open to bring it in. The house is an interesting design, open floor plan on top with a huge master suite. The rest of the bedrooms are downstairs and disconnected from the main house, acccess is from outside with an outside staircase. Only reason to be downstairs is to be in bed since you are so far away form the rest of the house. The sizee of the master is crazy big which of course is nice if you're in the master but if you're sharing the house it could be tough to divy up the sleeping arrangements. The downstairs roomss were a bit moldy, not so much that it was overpowering but if you're sensitive to that odor be aware. I suspect it's pretty common on this side of the island what with the large amounts of rain. All said, it's a very nice house in a great location and is completely private. |

Stayed for 7 days in August, 2012 great location (although no swimming), and the house has potential, but the property needs a little work. The upstairs master suite is in good shape, but the two downstairs suites are aged and musty.Hawaii Holiday Vacation Rentals were supberb. A defective pool pump was fixed in now time and they let us stay almost an entire extra day because of a late-night flight departure. Super accommodating. Stayed for 3 days in May, 2012 We came to Keeau from Maui for the State Track and Field Championships to watch our son run in the 400m. The location was beach front, very private, well maintained and beautifully crafted with a lot of Koa giving it an open lodge feel, and the bed in the master bdmr was the best. The rest of the bdrms were downstairs and opened to a large open lawn straight out to the sea which gave our guest the option for privacy as well. Everything one needs for cooking, including dinning options in and out on the large lanai, gas grill included is in this house. It really has a warmth, wether walking on beautiful Koa wood floors with bare feet,or returning from a days adventure Hale Kakahi welcomes you back. A few days as Hale Kakahi in Pahoa A guest from Newton, MA recommends this property. Stayed for 4 days in March, 2012 This property is a work of art inside and out, and we definitely enjoyed our time there, a wonderful place for adult couples, but there are some aspects that make it not so user-friendly for families. Access to the lower level bedrooms is from the outside, and there were no inside locks on those doors, making our daughters uncomfortable sleeping alone down there. The place is also showing it's age a bit; for example: the skylight in the master bath leaks when it rains, so clothes draped over the tub got wet overnight. Beautiful location and grounds. Home not well maintained and severely needs updating, ventilation and cleaning!!! A guest from Winterhaven, FL does not recommend this property. Stayed for 7 days in October, 2009 House has beautiful, well maintained grounds with a beautiful view of the ocean. The photos that we saw on the internet of the house are not the same house that we stayed in for 1 week. There are several areas that need repair and are actually rotted out and dangerous. There were only 3 out of 7 working sliders to allow ventilation upstairs and with no a/c it was hot. Downstairs, there is no a/c at all. You have to run dehumidifers and a small fan. Also, since you have to leave the doors open to ventilate, all the little bugs come in the home to swarm you at night. By the way good luck following all the rules of the house and if you dont the owners come in and turn off all your ceiling fans while you are gone. The Big Island is beautiful though. Most Hale Kakahi guests (we have had over 300 since 2001) tell us the house looks even more spectacular in person than it does in the photos on the Internet. Plus we own Hale Kakahi and pour our hearts and souls into it. So when this guest called on arrival to say she didn't like it, we couldn't help but take it personally. We certainly don't want anyone to stay who isn't happy, so we offered her a full refund. She refused. Instead, for the remainder of the week, 24 hours a day, even when they were out all day sightseeing, the guests proceeded to leave every fan in the house on and the air conditioner running in the master bedroom with the doors and windows open! After several days of this, of course we shut off the a/c and the fans when the guests were gone, which is what they should have done themselves out of common courtesy. Hawaii has the highest electric rates in the nation and we estimate the guests wasted several hundred dollars of energy by their thoughtless actions. We're sorry the guest was not happy here but she should have accepted the refund and stayed somewhere else rather than be unhappy for a week and misuse this beautiful home. |

The beachfront location was awesome although it was too rocky to swim there. The kitchen appliances were a bit dated and needed to be replaced. The lighting in the kitchen was very dim so we had to move a light into the cooking area. The wood floors and walls were beautiful, but the wood sliding doors tended to stick or come off the hinge. The master bedroom had air conditioning, but the rest of the house did not and at times it was a little warm. I was not sure why there were no stairs in the home to get down to the first floor. You had to go out the side door and down the outside stairs to get to the downstairs bedrooms. The huge lanai was great. Had some meals out there, coffee in the morning, played cards, had drinks. The lanai was very enjoyable. The pool was great, in very good condition as was the grounds. Very lovely. Our biggest concern was that it was quite a drive into Hilo. We spent a lot of time in our car driving. There was a market in Pahoa, but most of our trips required we start in Hilo. I would rate the home overall, a 4 star out of 5. |

Great, but no A/C Emanoel R. from Boca Raton, FL recommends this property. Stayed for 3 days in October, 2008 One of my main criteria was that the house have A/C. The web site and all the literature said that the house had A/C. Even the management company told me the same thing when I called and spoke with them directly. When we arrived however, we found out that only one bedroom had A/C. We were traveling with another couple and they had to sleep in a hot bedroom with a very noisy dehumidifier. I understand that most homes in Hawaii do not have A/C, but we should have been told the truth. For us, this took away from the beautiful house, gorgeous views and immaculate grounds. Rentals We try very hard to provide complete and accurate information about our properties in all our written and oral communications. The last thing we want is a guest who is disappointed and writes a bad review like this one! The descriptions of Hale Kakahi in all our web listings clearly state that only the master bedroom is air-conditioned. We're pretty happy to offer air conditioning in the master bedroom -- it sets Hale Kakahi apart because, as the guest points out, most homes do not have A/C at all. (Most guests and residents find the weather here very comfortable without A/C.) We don't believe we ever said anything to imply that the whole house had A/C, and we sure didn't intend to. One week at Hale Kakahi Curtis E. from Rancho Santa Margarita, CA recommends this property. Stayed for 7 days in September, 2008 Very dramatic property. Much better than expected from the on-line pictures. Like living in the botanical gardens. Geckos very friendly as well as the frogs at night. Sunrise very spectacular every morning. Not too far from Pahoa so its easy to get provisions or dine at Luquins.Curt |
