Why a Lucerne, Switzerland, Vacation Rental

If you've never been to Lucerne, your first sight of it and the rest of central Switzerland will be something you never forget. If you've been there, then you know what we're talking about. It's hard to describe the almost overwhelming sense of place you get in Lucerne (or any part of Switzerland for that matter). The mountains, the clear lakes, the quaint, historic villages and charming architecture, the culture--it all blends into a heady experience. You know, almost instantly, why Switzerland has always been THE destination for the super rich, super famous and super powerful, even today.

Vacation rentals are a great way to see Lucerne and all of central Switzerland. Europeans have long preferred vacation rentals over hotels for extended stays, and once you get to Lucerne, you aren't going to want to leave. What's more, you're going to want to feel like a local--immersing yourself in this magnificent place.

Lucerne. Chapel Bridge is a must see when you're in Lucerne proper. It spans the River Ruess and was built in the 14th century, though a portion had to be rebuilt in 1993 after a boat fire. It's not just the flower lined bridge that you'll find inspiring. Nearby are quaint alleys amidst medieval buildings and a busy market with lots of shopping opportunities. Mt. Pilatus offers well-marked hiking trails with wonderful views from the top. Mt. Rigi offers stunning views of the Swiss Alps, and is accessible by boat from Lucerne to Vitznau, after which you'll take a cogwheel train to the top. This just scratches the surface of all there is to do in Lucerne.

Engleberg. Definitely make a stop at the Engleberg Benedictine Monastery, which dates back to 1120 in the same location (the Abbey has been destroyed by fire three times in its long history, but rebuilt every time). Go to the top of Mt. Titlis, where you can see the Ice Cave, 150 meters long and 20 meters deep, beneath a glacier. Of course, when you come out, you'll have fantastic views of the Alps.

Whether you stay in Lucerne or Engleberg, you can always enjoy skiing in the Alps, in addition to outdoor activities such as hiking. And Switzerland is so full of culture and history, you can find plenty of non-outdoorsy things to do as well.
