Places to visit

Places to visit/things to do.
* St Emilion only half an hour away: This is a preserved medieval town famous for its wine. A beautiful spot to wander around for the day. Wonderful views across the wine region.

* Bastide towns: The area has numerous towns and villages dating from the 14th and 15th Century when France and England were at war. Castillon stages a spectacular mock battle ending with a firework display during weekends in July and August. Great fun.

* Montcaret, our nearest village - 1.5kms, has a wonderful Gallo-Roman museum displaying Roman mosaics found in the grounds of the local church. The area around Montcaret is littered with Roman artefacts, including a bench in our own garden (we think).

* Numerous Chateaux are in the area. One, walking distance away, at Saint Michel Montaigne, where you can view the original tower where the famous philosopher penned his words. You can also sample their wine too. There are plenty of places where you can wine taste and buy if you want to. We can point you in the right direction.

* Bergerac is about 40 minutes away by car. This is a lovely town on the banks of the Dordogne, where Cyrano is reputed to have come from. Lovely medieval streets. Lots of shops to wander around and some great restaurants.

* Bordeaux is about an hour by car. Or you can take the train from the local station, a less stressful way to get there. It is a vibrant city that offers something for everyone, be it: shopping, architecture, grand boulevards, restaurants or just wandering. We have city plans to help you get around and timetables to help you get there and back again.

* Lake Gurson is only 10 minutes up the valley from us. Here the local people have built a beach area, with restaurants and bars. There are pedelos available and crazy golf etc. There is a small entrance fee of 3 euros, but it is a great place to occupy children for the day.

* The river Dordogne is only 15 minutes away. Here you can take a boat trip along the river, or the more adventurous can hire canoes or go rafting!

* Further a field is Arcachon on the Atlantic coast. This boasts the largest sand dune in Europe, and you can climb it too, they have put steps in to help, the views from the top are spectacular. There are numerous wonderful seafood restaurants and lovely beaches. Nearby is the bird sanctuary of Le Teich. Both are about an hour and a half away by car.

* There are 2 golf courses within 45minutes drive. One in the direction of St Foy, the other towards St Emilion. Ask us for details.
