When traveling to Puerto Rico, all you you really need is a swimsuit, suntan lotion, flip flops and maybe a shirt for when you're not on the beach. Oh, and a towel and sunglasses. Everything else is pretty much optional.

East Puerto Rico features the island's top tourist attractions--El Yunque rainforest, two bioluminescent bays (their waters glow at night), Luquillo Beach, Las Cabezas Nature Reserve, as well as world-class golf courses, a large leatherback turtle nesting area, and a variety of things to see and do, from palm grove forests to beach villages where you can let the day slip away in warmth and water.

North Puerto Rico is where San Juan is located. That's the city you'll fly into and like any major metro area, there's an abundance to see and do, including Old San Juan. San Juan makes a great base for exploring the north, northeast and central portions of the island. Dorado is just east of San Juan and is an area of six beautiful pure white sand beaches. You'll also find golf courses, casinos and other activities.

The west Puerto Rico coast is pretty much just sand, sun and surf. You won't find much development or big resprts--just surf shops, cafes and quiet beaches. Rincon is something of a surfer town, and they come in waves from November to February to catch the big ones at Tres Palmas and Domes Beach.
