Joyce's Travel Journal:
Edinburgh
|
|
|
|
On a gray day, the craggy profile of Edinburgh Castle whispers ancient intrigues. Press your hand to a stone wall along The Royal Mile and you
can almost feel the pulse of medieval life. Like any Scot, the city is a natural storyteller—proud and brooding, with just a touch of whimsy.

Edinburgh Castle
Set high above the city on a mantle of volcanic rock, Edinburgh Castle served as a fortress for centuries before the Scottish Royals made
it a palace. You could easily spend half a day following the audio tour. Don't miss the ancient Honors of Scotland—the crown (last worn in
1651 at the coronation of King Charles II), scepter, and the sword of state.

The Royal Mile
Four separate streets—joined end-to-end—form the main thoroughfare of medieval Edinburgh. There's a bit of everything—from kilts to shortbread—in
its shops. In medieval days, you'd be keeping an ear open for cries of "Gardy Loo!"—the standard cry before residents emptied their chamber pots
on the street.

The Palace of Holyroodhouse
Built early in the 16th century by James IV, this is home to Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip on visits to Edinburgh. When they’re not in residence,
explore the King James Tower, where Mary, Queen of Scots, lived. One of her needlework pieces on display depicts a cat-and-mouse scene, with her cousin
and rival Queen Elizabeth I as the cat.

New Town
By the 18th century, Edinburgh's Old Town was bursting at the seams—even with high-rise tenement buildings stacking on as many as 20 floors. The first
phase of the New Town brought the relief of broad tree-lined boulevards and elegant squares lined with magnificent mansions. It remains the largest
expanse of Georgian architecture in Europe.

Princes Street Gardens
Rest your feet in this oasis between the Old and New Towns before window-shopping and art gallery-hopping on the other side of busy Princes Street.
